  1. A hypothetical choice for you:

    Benteke for another year

    OR

    Weimann for another 4 years?

    Benteke.

I think I agree but it does depend on Andi's potential. If he steps it up another level my answer would change! Without hindsight there's no right or wrong answer!

  2. No more than £20k a week maximum and id err towards £15k a week

We simply cannot be held to ransom by players such as Weimann or we are I the shite

We are all just guessing at the numbers BUT wouldn't most Villa fans and a few football clubs think Weimann was worth offering more than £15k to £20k/week?

I'm also guessing that Villa are waiting to see what Andi is offered elsewhere before deciding whether to match it.

  3. It was either one or the other so i decided on the one.

This may have been asked already but are they the same one? Engaged to your step-mom's sister or engaged to your mom's step-sister?

  4. Hindsight is what we need.

Weimann leaves and plays great for someone else - we should have done more to keep him!

We beat a £45k/week offer from another club to keep him but he doesn't develop (think Hendrie) - why did we agree to pay him £45k+/week?!

Without hindsight, it needs someone to have the full picture of the finances available and the full attributes of the player to our team. Over to you PL.

  5. 35 and 50 respectively.

Or if we can shift Ireland 70 for Tekkers.

That's fair enough and similar to what most would say, I guess. That does mean if another club offered 40 and 55, we would lose both players so why state this?

No, if we can't have two players play remotely well without them both leaving us at the first chance then I am jumping off the first proverbial football bridge.

  6. No, if we can't have two players play remotely well without them both leaving us at the first chance then I am jumping off the first proverbial football bridge.

They haven't left just yet but with what you know about our approximate finances, how much would you offer Andi and CB to ensure they stayed?

  7. I'm the other way when hungover.  Can't eat anything until at least 5pm and then it's minimal.  Strange, because in real life I'm hungry every 10 minutes.

Best eating with a hangover, even if you don't feel like it. Either it stays down and you feel better, or it comes up and you feel better.

  8. Benteke I can accept losing.  If can't keep hold of a player who has had a season like Weimann's then there is no point in hoping our players ever perform again.

Doesn't it depend on what he is offered elsewhere?

  9. Yes but if we loose a player like Weimann then what does that say about us?

I don't know... perhaps that another manager sees Andi as a great prospect, knows he can buy him cheap (just one year left of his contract) and so can offer Andi OTT wages. Different managers/clubs value players differently at different times. Occasionally that can benefit us; for example, 9 months ago we valued Benteke higher than Arsenal and others.

While we're playing the wages game:

Those who have said we should do whatever to keep him, I'm curious what is the maximum you would offer?

Those who have said we should not allow certain contracts to run down to the final year, how would you avoid it?

  10. Well it lists it as 4.16m, which is a huge 80k a week. I mean I'm sure we take it with a pinch of salt, but it can't be that far off can it? I mean no smoke without fire and all that

I think the internet proves there is often smoke without fire!

Over the months after a signing there are 'leaks' of salary. How accurate they are I don't know. These figures you mention could just be an average of what is rumoured.

It seems strange that the yearly salaries quoted are made up from round-ish weekly figures. Wouldn't a contract be made up as a round-ish yearly figure? I'd have thought agents would be asking for £Xm per year or £XXm over a long contract, not asking for a weekly wage. For some reason, the media love 'per week' figures and you can bet they are rounded up, and then some.

Also, the figures quoted may include bonuses based on a good deal of success; something that hasn't happened for a while! The media always state DB9 cost us £24m and yet I remember it as £17m or so plus add-ons, many of which we are unlikely to have to pay. Still, £24m sounds a lot more spectacular than (for example) £19.18m!

  11. If a contract is accepted at first offer, I suspect the offer was too high!

I don't think any of the contract talks are at stalemate yet. Our club is not a bottomless pit of money so I don't blame it for not being held to ransom, i.e. deciding what a player is worth and not exceeding it. The club will offer lower and move to a middle ground - the period we are in, I guess. At the same time, I don't blame players and agents waiting to see what other clubs are offering.

I would really like Andi to stay but if he has an offer of say £45k/week, should we really be trying to match or improve on it? Andi would be snapped up by half a dozen clubs at £25k per week, but we'd have no trouble matching that. I only hope there isn't a manager out there who takes a shine to Andi and persuades his club to offer £40k+/week.

  12. Robert Lewandowski is currently on about 40k at Dortmund.

Im not sure I would be pushing 40k for Weimann, as much as I like him he is not in that bracket of player.

    Couldn't agree more

How do you force a player to sign a contract for less than he thinks he is worth?!

  13. when well play at home against serbia ill make a signboard with: "benteke please stay at AVFC!!" =P

Go for it, that would be ace!

Expect the media to report it as 'Benteke urged to end stay at Villa'.

  14. After Newcastle we were 18th with 19th place Reading 1 behind with a game in hand after they had a fabulous month, with QPR not far off  and having signed some big players (Remy, Samba) and we'd just signed Sylla and Dawkins. Common opinion was pretty much "we're ****-ed"

And I shared a similar view. Off the back of vital defeats against Wigan Southampton and Newcastle, all at home. We'd been good away but bottled it (WBA and Swansea) and we'd just been ejected from the League Cup semis by Bradford and the FA Cup 4th round by Millwall.

Morale was at a complete low. Some people were saying how we'd finish bottom by a long way. Barely anyone but the ridiculously optimistic had us to stay up.

    ^Exactly how I remember it.^

Some might add that it was under Lambert's management that we went through all the above. I prefer to think that period was part of Lambert and his team 'settling in' or 'finding their feet' and the good (not faultless) last third of the season was more reflective of things to come. Next season will tell.

  15. Benteke says if they want me to stay I will not force a move away.

Lambert says he has asked Benteke to stay.

From those two statements, he will stay, but this depends now on Lerner and Faulkner accepting bids. Its as simple as that really. If we accept bids then he will talk to the clubs in question, if we dont then he has no problem and he is happy here.

If the men upstairs do truly trust Lambert then I would assume offers will be rejected. Accepting could actually cause problems between the board and PL.

PL also says they've spoken about extending his contract, not just a pay rise. CB agent says he is happy here too.

None of what CB has directly said or what has been written (mostly via translation and/or out if context) means he is definitely staying or definitely leaving, but I think many will find the comment above far too reasoned for VT! I wonder why the media don't run with this side of the story?

  16. What is the point of second guessing things that might or might not happen based something else which might or might not happen? It means RL..., PL won't get the money anyway..., we're a nothing club..., other players are bound to leave as well..., FFS. :bang:

Well CB's not even left yet for any of those things to be even a possibility.

It's worse than another bugbear of mine - from the morning news - "The PM is expected to announce blah in a speech this morning". Fine, bring me the announcement and I'll listen myself or summarise it for me when you've heard it! Don't make it out as news before it's even happened!
