  1. Taken from BBC Match Preview....

    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head

    • Burnley's only victory in the past nine competitive meetings was 1-0 away in the Premier League in May 2015.
    • Aston Villa are looking to record consecutive top-flight wins away at Burnley for the first time since a run of four between 1895 and 1900.
    • Villa have gone 33 top-flight visits to Turf Moor without a clean sheet since a goalless draw 101 years ago.

    Burnley

    • Each of Burnley's past five Premier League matches ended 1-0 (W2, L3).
    • Having beaten Liverpool last Thursday, the Clarets can win consecutive league games for the first time since June.
    • No team has scored fewer home goals in the Premier League this season than Burnley, with five.
    • Nonetheless, Sean Dyche's side have not conceded more than once in any of their past nine league fixtures.
    • Chris Wood has scored in three of his four league starts against Aston Villa.
    • Ashley Barnes is one short of 200 league appearances for Burnley.

    Aston Villa

    • Villa have already equalled last season's final tally of nine Premier League victories.
    • If they avoid defeat on Wednesday, Villa will reach 30 points after 18 top-flight matches for the first time since the 2009-10 season under Martin O'Neill.
    • Dean Smith's side have gone three away league games without a win, losing the past two.
    • Emiliano Martínez has kept nine Premier League clean sheets this season, second only to Manchester City's Ederson.
    • Bertrand Traore has scored four goals in his past six Premier League appearances.
    • Thanks 3
  2. A tough fixture and a tough one to predict however when thinking about the game two things came to me....

    1. We can beat anyone - Not meaning any level but also any style, Smith has built a solid structure that stands up against most and gives you confidence we can win anywhere (Far cry from last year)

2.I cant wait to see this team play again, im really loving the swagger and style of play

Im going to go 1-0 Villa with Watkins to grab the goal

    But it's the rules.

By chesting it down instead of letting it go a new situation is created.

VAR did everything right as a matter of fact. It's just that the rules are really dumb

Mings is dilly dallying on the ball and being casual that is the error and that is why we concede the goal.

How many times do you see (And it happened last night) player in the midfield passes a ball out wider and gets caught late, ball goes to the winger who then miscontrols and gets tackled and the game gets pulled back for the free kick as there was no advantage

Last night Mings controls it and Rodri then intercepts due to the offside position he was in and so it should be pulled back for the offside as there was no advantage - The rule thats in place contradicts how the game is played elsewhere on the picth

And Savage pretending he knew it was a rule just finished me off!

Also on a side note Tyronne Mings was outstanding last night, hes an absolute leader for that team and backline - As i said before i think he has been outspoken on a few things and for some reason that seams to have been held against him when what he said was absolutely spot on

  4. So looks like Hause/Trez are the main absentees through Covid - Wonder if El Ghazi one thats not quite right ? Bench shows that Sanson and another attacking player are needed

    Great to see Barkley back

Do we know we have a makeshift team?

Most of the usual first XI have been snapped in the training pics over recent days......

Smith said there is a difference between training and paying which gave me the impression that there will be a few of those that were pictured still not ready

I'd rather be away to Man City after a covid outbreak and combine 2 likely defeats into 1, than be away to say Sheffield United after covid and risk a fatigue-inspired defeat and still have to face Man City away some other time.

I thoughts this, get a game under our belt before next 2 which are very winable

  7. Limited player with 54 goal contributions in 126 games.....come on have some respect, he's been an outstanding signing vs the money paid and some of the dross we have had in the last 10 years.

Played a huge art in our promotion and ultimately in our survival last year he stepped up with some assists at vital times, wish him nothing but the best

Im not going to lie and say although probably right thing for all involved im a bit gutted that this is probably the beginning of the end for him at Villa

  8. One little thing to keep an eye on is the storm that's about to hit, Manchester is going to have constant rain for 2 days (2 months worth i think i heard)

I know modern pitches are totally different but that's a lot of rain and so could put the game in doubt or have an effect on the pitch for the game

    Outside of that

    City 3 Villa 1

    Allan out, DCL likely out.

With no virus you'd say we had a chance here but who knows what state we'll be in.

At least it isn't a West Brom or Newcastle where we'd normally think we'd be taking three points.

    No Doucore either

Having covid is nothing at all like being "well rested".

Some of our players will absolutely have longer term effects. Even if those effects are just fatigue. There's no way our whole squad can get covid and all come back as fit and raring to go as they were beforehand.

This is really bad news for us and there's no way to escape that fact.

Let's just hope the effects aren't TOO bad for TOO many of our players or else we could be in some serious trouble again. Thank goodness we have already won a fair few games is all I can say.

    Agree

My 12 year old has had a cough for 4 months and pre Christmas was struggling to do any form of sport in the cold weather due to coughing, Dr's convinced he has had covid (his 2 best mates did so fair chance he did) but had no initial major symptoms but long term effects have been worse and that they have started to see this in several cases

He's just a reallykey part of the side. He's a great role model too, Chester aside it's been a long time since we've had a CB I've warmed to in the way I have to Mings. Which for a club like ours and the affinity we've had for McGrath, Mellberg, Laursen is a shame really.

I agree Konsa is in the better form, he's probably the better player or at least will be if not already. But Mings is key to what we're trying to build here, off the pitch as much as on it.

Think it's easy to forget at times just how crucial he was to reinvigorating the side during his loan spell. We *had* to sign either him or Tammy. Almost regardless of fee. It had to happen.

    Good post

Just feels some times we have to find the scape goat and because he comes across as confident, likes to try and play and has had his opinion on a few things then it seems to be Tyronne that's been chosen.....He makes mistakes - So does Jack, Luiz, Watkins etc etc

  12. To add to the disrespect we supposedly showed last time, here's more from their manager on the night

Liverpool stand-in manager Neil Critchley talking to Sky Sports: "I thought we were magnificent. We were fantastic from the start, we had a couple of chances from the first whistle. We were really unfortunate to concede and then find ourselves 2-0 down. It was an incredible night and no-one wanted it to end. The support we had was unbelievable.

"The conduct of the Villa players was first class. For Dean Smith and John Terry to come in to our dressing room after the game and say the things they said... They said 'keep going, good luck' and wished us the best. A moment I will remember and the players will remember for the rest of their lives.

"Some of them showed the potential to one day play for us, or in the Premier League. They will know it was just part of their journey. My overwhelming feeling is one of immense pride."

12th is quite different from 17th which is what the option was....but even 12th & FA Cup winners is fanciful.

Your hopes are likely to be dashed....only Arsenal 2109/20 finishing 8th was the only team in 20 years to win the FA Cup outside the top 6 teams finish in the Premier League......Portsmouth and Wigan was the only exeptional longshots, outside the premier league

The point being made is.......unless you are in the top 6 in the league, its most unlikely in the modern era to go on and win the FA cup.

The League is the place to make your mark and cement your status......the cherry on the cake comes later........judging by sequential patterns of Course, Luck can change that, as we all know.

Sorry maybe been missed as was in a previous post but my particular passion on all of this is that with the congestion the big 6 face this year there will be a real temptation from them to rest players in the FA cup even more than ever especially as the PL and CL races hot up and so it feels with us being pretty safe already this is the year to have a real go

totally agree massive game on tuesday, we need them all fresh.

spurs have an easy cup tie...they could play their kids and win comfortably

We play Spurs Wednesday so are we saying that they wont be fresh 5 days later? I agree in making 2-3 changes especially to give Heatton, Davis and Hause starts but i can see Smith doing 8-9

On a side note. How f****** depressing is it that football has got to the point when Aston Villa v Liverpool in the FA Cup 3rd round even warrants a debate of resting players.

I accept that it DOES warrant the debate but it just seems so sad that we've got this point.

It seemed to start with Man United pulling out of the competition to play in Brazil, and then got worse as the semi finals moved to Wembley, killing the kudos of reaching the final.

Then there was the 5pm kick offs, the scheduling of the final before the league had finished and then of course came the big money for each PL place.

The FA Cup used to mean everything.  Now even fans of midtable clubs want to play the reserves. Sad times.

Totally agree, Villa fans saying that the cup can wait or would rather finish 5th/6th - We have won nothing since 96 and haven't won the FA Cup since 1957!!!!!!!!!

I just cant get my head round it, give me 12th place and an FA Cup win anyway, you still get Europe but you win something and players on our books get to experience that winning feeling and are probably less likely to go off elsewhere quitehite yet

1996 when we last won a trophy we were 4th in the league, league cup winners and semis of the FA Cup & we played a near full strength team throughout pretty much all of that and our squad was limited - What's changed?

I would love to win the cup, but this year I would prefer if we focused mainly on the PL. Not because we have a CL/EL to preserve, but who knows, we could compete. And this season I am more scared of injuries to the tight program, and I would prefer rotations to happen in the cup.

Cant we take advantage of that tight program though? We aren't going down so while others rest in the cup due to league/champions league commitments we progress? Im sure Liverpool will be much changed Friday so lets go and knock them out !
