If we have 2 up top and width we're playing an old fashioned 4-4-2. Do any teams really play that anymore? It also leaves a lot of space in the middle.

The width in the modern game comes from the fullbacks so putting a CB there puts you at a disadvantage to start with but its made worse when you put a player like CH who is not going to provide any width on his weaker side.Against Newcastle he was on the left and we moved the ball for him to whip it in.Yesterday ont he right side he offered nothing apart from one blocked shot , which he should of passed back to Jack. There was one point where Jack put a ball into space for CH to run on to and he lack of pace allowed the defender to get back.

Teams with 2 upfront seems to play 3-5-2 to use the wingbcks as width whilst maintaining 2 backs of 3 in the middle

Yesterday was a perfect example.  We were on top and Wolves made adjustments in positioning and the way they are going to attack. From there on in we failed to adjust and eventually lost.

Was like the Chelsea game , in that we barely had the ball but flucked a goal but still we should of made changes - nope sat on his hands they make changes and score then we change

Yesterday I don't know how you watch that FH and especially with Targett off don' t think you need to do something to get some width to a team who has 2 strikers up front.Hourihane on the right of a 3 man midfield is nuts

Sacking Bruce and getting Smith in ended up saving our finances, at least temporarily. That promotion saved the club.

That decision was pretty massive. I'd be delighted if the next appointment had a similar level impact.

Obviously I'd want our results in the PL to improve under whoever is the next manager. Hopefully we'll not have to take the detour via the Championship but it's seems more or less a certainty.

Bruce , what ever you think of him has great success getting out of the league and had gotten us to a play off final but he had lost the team by the time we sacked him , I feel Dean is in a similar position now

No way on earth will we get 10m for trez 😂

I think mcginn , mings grealish and Luiz would all want to leave

Which means another rebuild of the spine of the team...and yet people think relegation won't be that bad ...

We spend And waste so many Tens of millions on poor players , if only we spent anywhere near that on getting a top manager then the rest would fall into place , get the right man In and back him The more I look at things the more jardim appeals to me ,

It's amazing how many ex players I see when watching other games , our turn over of players is crazy

In wasted cash it must be around 50  mil in wages and fee's on Hogan  , Kodjia and McCormack in the last 3 years with a return of next to nothing ( Kodjia did score some important goal and Hogan we may get something back on )

Apparantly we missed out on Cahill as didnt want to give him a 2 year deal  , currently he will be playing PL football next season and we won't ..

We’ll lose half a dozen players at least.

McGinn, Jack, Mings, Hassan, El Ghazi, Luiz are certainties.

Another rebuilding job required, at least some will have another excuse to trot out.

It will be like last time , we will have a bunch of players who want out , who we will be stuck with waiting for bids whilst we ourselves want to bring players in.It's the issue that effects every team going down which is why so many end up struggling to stay up let alone push to get back up.

We will again need to build a side to go up knowing some of them won't be good enough in PL and need another rebuild , unless we can pull off what Wolves did with a super agent...

No, you are right, we can't have it both ways....but remember, we are all speculating here, no one really knows what factor is the main problem....but also remember, I have been following Villa for over 60 years, I have seen the ups and downs, just like a few posters on here.....you call on your experience to guide you.....I have seen scenarios like this before....its not new.

I was merely adding a very significant player to the claim, Villalad was making.

sure Dean has to be credited with the promotion, no getting away from that......but the cohesive galvanised effort has dissipated.....I will be amazed if he gets it back.

The team looks like it has lost faith in the leader.....my opinion, only.

there are times when you want to be wrong, this is such a time.

I would agree that to me the players look like they have lost faith  ,despite some of the PR spin

It's why I would make a change as the player's need to direction from a new voice even if its just a short term solution.I also go alone with the point that when has manager has lose the group its very hard to get it back.Look at Posh at Spurs , he may go on and do well eslewhere ( many clubs would take him  ) but Spurs had to make the change as he had lost the players.Mourinho is an interesting case as he has had great success but seems to lose players after 2 seasons and leaves the role .Chelsea he went back once there was a new bunch of players there was successful again but again lost the players and left.

Point of I have made on the Smith thread is once the losing momentum is there its hard to turn it around and this idea we will drop down and he will wave a magic wand and 1) Get players used to losing back on board 2 ) Suppliment them with new players and results will pick up is fanciable.

Purslow appointed him and Suso - so if the players brought are not good enough and the performance on the pitch inst good enough then he also has to be held to account

Villa just seem unable to appoint the right people in the right roles to run a club even when we have billionaires running owning us

  8. On those stats could it be also we are conceding less chances as the games in general are less intense.Wolves massively played within themselves yesterday but have been since the restart  , they don't concede so only need to score from a few chances to win games.

  9. Looks low on confidence but we are also not playing to his strengths , we don't get enough cross's into the box to use his heading ability and we don't play balls for him to run unto .He is ok at holding the ball up but its not his strength.

Very interesting read and shows the disdain for purslow elsewhere -

Tyrrell operated behind the scenes but Purslow craved attention. The players nicknamed him ‘Forrest Gump’ because of his tendency to insert himself at the centre of every situation. The managing director had a more grandiose view when he looked in the mirror: he referred to himself as ‘the Fernando Torres of finance.’ He liked to be around the star players, making a beeline for the striker and Steven Gerrard whenever he entered the dressing room. It became a running joke within the squad.

    Pretty damming that

I am starting to think he is certainly part of our issues , certainly talks a good game but results not following.People attack Suso for the transfers but  his remit comes from Purslow.

Liverpool are targeting the points record - they may play one or two younger players but  I don’t see them playing a load of kids and reserves , they will take us to the cleaners no doubt .

Just saw that so that makes our task there pretty much impossible ...then United after top 4 ...

Probably just blame the fact it was against the current best team in the world

Which is likely to be filled with reserves and kids so they can get a league winners medal for game time.

  13. From BBC

    Quote

Warnock and trusty assistant Kevin Blackwell had barely a couple of training sessions with their new players before this game but from this evidence it had been time well spent.

Under predecessor Woodgate, Boro played attractive, passing football, while under Tony Pulis before that it was physical and direct. Warnock's methods were best described as a hybrid of the two.

The formation, switched to a 4-4-2 for large parts, gave Boro balance with wingers providing delivery to two forwards - something craved by Boro fans after several seasons of one central striker.

It was a switch that seemed to energise Fletcher, who pulled defenders about with movement, seized countless possession on the break and added a first goal since early February

Warnock and Jones at Luton both have instant impacts on teams I can't see Smith galvanising the squad in 7 days when he has failed to get them going with 3 months prep.Long term if we go down I don't see him turning round a losing mindset which he is part of losing effects players so it will effect managers too.He has managed a team to a win since Jan there is no way that is not effecting his decision making and mindset.

I don't think we need some over technical manager now we need someone like we had with Sherwood who can come in and change the atmosphere , give players a fresh voice on sidelines and motivate them

The team was in dire straits and had nearly given up.

Jack kept messaging Tammy and said it'll all be fine once he returned. And it sure did.

Nothing tactically changed. It was the same system and formation. We got a world class player and a leader back and he galvanized the whole team.

I can guarantee you there would be no promotion without Jack.

I don't think its even debatable , as soon as he returned we went on that winning run.

John Percy confirms there is nothing in the Smith sack rumours.

More of the same for the rest of the season

When we lose next week will he blame not playing for 7 days ?

Alan Curbishley at Charlton is the only other one I can think of.

I keep seeing people saying its fine he will get us promoted nxt season if we go down but there is little evidence teams sticking with the same manager 1) come straight back up 2) that manager makes it through the season

Wagner still free after leaving the Huddersfield job. Was a miracle worker there

Nope he is at Schalke who just set a new record of 16 games without a win ...so actually he would fit in well here

Would you accept old harry redknapp assisting JT for 6 games ?

Might be worth a shot ...like I said I feel like just a different voice on the sidelines is needed.

What’s with all the Warnock talk, he’s just taken the job at Boro hasn’t he?

Yes and won his first game ...he wouldnt be right for us he has always struggled at this level but Big Sam would do a job.TBH I think almost any fresh face on the sidelines would help now

I've touched on this a few times. Smith has a way of playing, as evidenced by the first 5/6 games.

For some reason he has ditched his philosophy.

Because it left us too open and we conceded to many goals , so now he has gone Bruce ball and made us play more with an eye on not losing than winning.Sure we look tighter at the back but that's because we pass sideways and offer sod all going forward as no one ventures forward and we lack pace to play on the counter.

If he were sacked tonight, where does he go next?  Based on his record at all clubs to this point, who will putting him top of their shortlist?

Swansea? Reading? Sheffield Wednesday? Blackburn? Derby?

I think that tells its own story.

I said this a while ago , no Prem club is going to look at him and in the championship his promotion will get him in the door to some jobs but other's will wonder why Brentford improved after he left.

On sacking I see Boro who were hopeless last week after winning away  to a decent Stoke side a few days after Warnock takes job. I think our only hope now is him gona and a new manager bounce like we got with Sherwood.
