Just now, The_Steve said:This will be my only post on the matter (I'll copy it into the Gerrard thread).
We controlled the first half and the corner non-goal was a big struck of bad luck.
After 60 minutes we didn't have enough to threaten, the successes were neutralised, and whilst the goal was a huge slice of luck, we didn't have the impetus to break them down (which isn't solely a Gerrard problem FWIW). We are not very good at that - my overall concern is the lackadaisical tactical approach.
I am not a reactionary, nor one to easily change opinions with the wind, I just don't think we will see the progress we want.
On a different day we win this, sadly it wasn't to be.
I think the board did right sacking Smith and I think they need to be equally brave. But they need to bring in someone with fresh ideas - at least we have Critchley to occupy in the short term.
We aren't in danger of relegation by any stretch, it's just the meandaring that compells change at this point.
I'm out
UTV.
You undo any of the reason in this post with a daft statement like that at the end.
We are absolutely in danger of relegation. We’ve played 4 matches and we’ve lost 3. It’s very likely we’ll have 3 points after the first 6 matches. That isn’t just relegation form, it’s relegation at Xmas form. Get your head out of the sand.
Unless something changes, we’re in big, big trouble.

Another 90 minutes in the tank for the big man.

McGinn just letting his man pick the ball up in the middle of the pitch and shoot and score. Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful.

Craig Butler is going to be livid.

I think we’ve been very good and fancy us to score at some point.

Surprise surprise, we look better in midfield with 2 holding.

Around £30 million as @messi11mentioned. Should do that and the £20 million for Laimer and our midfield is significantly better.
We’ve got McGinn, mate. Don’t worry about it.

Bailey has probably played well in competitive fixtures for a grand total of 60 minutes in his entire time here. Granted, he’s been injured, but this guy must be watching a different Leon Bailey. He’s been poor mostly.

You missed out four words “the potential to be” - pretty important in that quote otherwise you’re deliberately trying to create a false narrative of delusion. Unless it’s an error on your part.
It’s no error. I don’t think Bailey has the potential to be the best winger in the world.
Unless you do?

I don’t think baileys been treated too unfairly, he had a mare last year with injuries. Imagine what Buendias side would he saying if he had a Craig butler, Sanson too. Marvs even sending cryptic messages on insta. Gerrards favouritism and chopping of players to try and find his best 11 despite form has created a mess at the club imo
Everything points to an unhappy playing squad. The Mings/McGinn situation was an absolute farce.
Gerrard reminds me of Roy Keane as a manager.
I’d be willing to bet big money that the players would love to see the back of Gerrard.

I would sell Bailey. Don't need any more stress and drama behind the scenes. Let him go for a profit if we can and let his dad no doubt ruin Bailey's career with his brilliant advice.
Strong words, flaps.

Surprise surprise.
I wonder if he’s insinuating that he’s had an offer from another club and wants to leave but perhaps we’re not allowing it.
‘best in the world’ - LOL

This could be a bit of a mix up…
I’ve seen and maybe heard that Gerrard wants more “killers” in the team… after the Bolton game too… can’t recall the exact words now…
That would seem to suggest players that are clinical… not creativity as such, not in the literal sense..
Tbh, I don’t like this attitude of “if you’re unable to get the best out of the players at your disposal, just go and spend money on others…”
It’s not the solution, proper coaching is… with a quality addition here and there (midfield)…
I do think we need to get rid of a few if we are bringing new guys in, the squad and wage bill is getting really bloated…
One of Ings or Watkins must go if we sign a quality CF imo…
Ings doesn’t fit into a single striker system, is ageing and past his best and is on massive wages… his value is only going to depreciate… despite his reputation as a good finisher…
Nobody is taking Ings from us with that contract. We just have to accept now that he’s with us for the next 3 years and that’s that.

Buendia is superb at spotting a forward pass into a player who's in space, and crucially, he plays it early. He's honestly such an intelligent player.
Personally I think he’s overrated on here.

Anyone think he'd be more useful as a wingback in a 3 - 5 - 2?
As a matter of fact, probably both him and Cash.
Probably but not sure we’d play it. Does make sense with the players we have.
-
I’d love him to play this…
——————Watkins——————
Coutinho———————Bailey
——————Ramsey——————
————Luiz———Kamara———
—————————————————-
Digne—Mings—Chambers—CashId tell the fullbacks that only one can go forward and must be ready to defend first and foremost. Luiz and Kamara would hold and not do much attacking at all. They’d also shift over to cover any attacking fullback. Buendia to come on after 55mins to add impetus and/or challenge one of the two for a starting place.
We need to go back to basics. Be more compact and not allow teams to run through us and get in down the channels. The current system with marauding full backs and not playing anybody in the middle of the pitch is suicide. McGinn absolutely has to be dropped.

I just feel with the system where the wing backs bomb forward and the midfielders have to cover, you could have prime Vieira in there and he would be horribly exposed. I'd rather we spent the Sarr money on terminating Gerrard's contract and bringing in a much better manager. Just stick Luiz and Kamara together and tell them not to move much more than 10 yards away from each other and bring back wingers.
Here here.

The otavio links seem to be coming back. He does have better stats that sarr
I think he’s probably a good player but I feel a diminutive attacking midfielder is the absolute last thing we need now.
We need physical central midfielders who are good at passing.
To be honest, I’m at the point now where I don’t really care. Until we change the entire system and stop playing the fullbacks further forward than our No. 10’s, we’re never going to improve.
The only two teams that get away with playing so expansively are Man City and Liverpool and even Liverpool are struggling now they’ve lost some key personnel and their midfield isn’t as strong.
We’re a mess and I can’t see how any new signing changes things under Gerrard.

He’s a victim of the system, as is Ramsey, but his performances haven’t been good enough for a long, long time.
We’re trying to improve. The first way we’re going to do that is by sacking the manager and bringing in a manager that tells players they’re allowed to play in the middle of the pitch. The second way is to then improve our first XI. Unfortunately for McGinn, I’d say he’s the first player we’d need to replace. He’s not good enough for a top half PL side.

So many times he finds himself either on his own without anybody else in midfield to pass to or being run at by an entire team whilst his teammates are off doing something random in an area of the pitch they shouldn’t be.

Like I said, "food for thought".
This cliche of having "lost the dressing room", for me, it's just another excuse for the players to hide behind. They don't represent Steven Gerrard, they represent Aston Villa. To give 90 minutes of unquestionable commitment is the minimum we ask of our players, if that's not forthcoming, then I'm afraid, they need to be held accountable.
I think this is fanciful thinking. Of course, it SHOULD be that way but it just doesn’t work that way.
There have been plenty of times where I probably should have put more effort in at work but when your boss is a c*** it affects your motivation and will to succeed for them. It just does.
I doubt the players really care about Villa, not most of them anyway, they care about themselves and their paycheck. They’re also powerful enough nowadays to affect management and who gets to keep their job. In our case, I hope the players get Gerrard the sack because we’re going nowhere under this clown.

There are vague rumours floating around that we had someone at Porto v Sporting on Saturday. Whether we did, and who we were watching, is just rumour and guesswork.
That’s not very Villatalk of you. We definitely had someone there and we were watching at least 4 players and we’ll sign two of them.
Discuss.

I’d be willing to bet big money the players dislike Gerrard. I can’t back that theory up but I bet they’re sick and tired of being set up to lose every week.
Can’t imagine Gerrard is a nice bloke to play for.

This isn’t being spoken about enough. His positioning for their goal is criminal and he does nothing when Fornals picks the ball up either.
I’m at a loss as to what to say with McGinn now. Ive said it all already.
