every sport needs a governing body. just a shame the football one is so corrupt

the likes of the euros are organised by the various other organisations i.e. uefa

in terms of break away, that was essentially the super league. it was to be not in any way affiliated with fifa. the players would've been forbidden from playing in any fifa recognised tournament i.e the world cup. so the idea of a break away is not as great as it sounds.

it's far easier to just sort the current governing body out...which in itself is far from easy

    Yeh, some very good points.

It's a mess from top to bottom then to surmise.

Like a European super league but globally?

Think we've seen the film before

I knew that would be brought up...

But surely this is different. Teams breaking away from their domestic leagues is a little different from national teams breaking away from FIFA, surely?

It wouldn't be easy, I get that, and it goes against the status quo, but FIFA is a cancerous, odious organisation that just isn't fit for purpose.

Hope he does go back and Postecoglou can show him up even more. No ill will against Gerrard, but hopefully then the love in from the media will stop.

The love in from the media will never stop. Just take a look at Steve Bruce. He fails, fails a bit more, then fails even further and no matter where he goes, fans are told he's the messiah and that they shouldn't be too harsh on him.
Even when he walked out on Sheff Wed and then said he'd never quit a job whilst at Newcastle, the media said nothing.

Maybe Gerrard is the next Bruce? Infallible.

  4. This is a genuine question. Apologies for the ignorance.

But why do we have FIFA. Why does it have to be the FIFA WC? I know it's always been done this way but we're talking about one of the most corrupt organisations in the world here. Why do they have to organise it?

Can't countries just organise their own tournament or break away?

Will we ever sell him? Would be a good option for a championship side.

I actually think he'd do well in a top division somewhere else. The PL is just a little too quick for him and he struggles on the ball.
He'd be absolutely fine somewhere like Holland or France.

  6. Not too worried about the age profile. If we went after Zaha, we’d have a midfield/forward options that probably looked like this:

    Watkins - 27
    Bailey - 25
    Zaha - 30
    Ramsey - 22
    Kamara - 22
    Luiz - 25
    Buendia - 25
    Coutinho - 30

    Hardly an OAP club.

Zaha is a full on shit-house on the pitch. Winds me and the opposition right up. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it though and it's actually an asset in a way. He also delivers in terms of goals and assists. At 30, he's still got plenty of good years in the tank. His sort of experience and talent would be a great addition to Villa.

I'd be all for it on a 3 and a half year contract.

    100% with this.

Imagine him with Bailey behind him (as long as Bailey keeps the form up).

The opposition would have a serious headache.

All of a sudden, in that 442 shape we now have so many options.

There's not really a weakness throughout the squad. Perhaps up front? Watkins and Ings are like one very good striker if you roll them into one.

Wouldn't mind keeping out of it in January, if Emery continues to size up what he wants.

If we do go for a striker, Evanilson at Porto is someone we could get who I think will grow into a top player. Not sure on Marcus Thuram who I saw a very tentative link to.

I imagine he’ll want pace up top and out wide. We have that to an extent in Bailey and Watkins but I think he’ll want a couple more options.

A top striker and another wide player gives us serious options both in a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-3-1 formation

Not sure we can afford another striker on big money with Ings and Watkins both here? Would we need to get rid of one? We both know Ings isn’t going anywhere. Having both Coutinho and Buendia here also limits how much we can spend on another attacking player.

Id love us to really trim the squad as well as adding to it in Jan and the Summer.

He's not a Gerrard player, contributes far too often.

He prefers someone who doesn't really contribute but can bang in a 30 yarder every 10 games.

    !

Man, Gerrard was a stupid c***.

We've been linked with QPR's Ilias Chair again. I think we should sign him for no other reason than his middle name is Emilian. He'd make a nice addition to our collection.

I feel like he’s a very similar player to Buendia and Coutinho. Not sure he’s what we need at all so can’t see this one being true.

I disagree. I think he is. Not only currently but way more potential too.

Potentially, maybe, but Zaha is a better player at present. I think you’d be hard pressed to find many fans of other clubs that would say Bailey is better than Zaha. You probably wouldn’t find many Villa fans that think that! But I admire your enthusiasm!

Zaha is a next level shithouse and I hate him. I mean, Its all I can do not to out my fist through the screen when I see his face on TV. Horrible character. Always kicking off with players trying to get them booked. sneaky, underhanded, always pleading with the ref...
A once in a generation level bellend, like Robbie Savage. I cannot think of anybody I'd want less. Maybe rat boy Bruno Fernandes for the same reasons.

Their talent is irrelevant. I could never cheer them. That aside, Zaha is 30 odd now and Bailey is a better player, hands down. We don't need him. Better, younger wingers / forwards around.

Also, maybe we should bid for Brighton and Brentford's best players, then wait for them to line up replacements and buy them instead.

Bailey isn’t better than Zaha albeit I’ve been impressed with Bailey in the last few matches.

He has Crystal Palace in his blood....Man U couldn't get a tune out of him, which doesn't say much, I know.

Not sure I buy that. If that were the case, he wouldn't be running his contract down!
He'll have claret and blue in his blood if we offer him £160k a week (not saying we will).

Zaha is a terrific player but not sure he's what we need or if it's a sensible move right now. That said, to get a player of his quality, you're going to need to spend about £30-50m in transfer fees and that's without the wages of the player in question on top of that.
Players on free transfers are so attractive to clubs given the avoidance of the initial outlay.

To put it into perspective using crude maths and very little real understanding of how transfers work...

Lets say we signed Zaha on a 3yr deal on £175k a week. That is £175,000*156. Total outlay of £27,300,000.
Buendia cost us £35,000,000 + his wages (I assume 70k a week for 4 years). Total outlay of £49,500,000.

These are two very rough examples and don't take into account things like resale value and age. All I'm saying is, the free transfer market can really throw up some great deals for clubs.

Liverpool are dogshit this season and that's being generous. Spurs misfiring and media on Conte's back already. Quite happy for us to fly under the radar

I wouldn’t call them dogshit. They’re still a better team than us and they’re above us. I do agree that both them and Spurs are beatable and I think we’ll pick up a win against one of the two.

Bertie is the opposite, his skill is in coming short and doing the unexpected and beating his man

Adama you know what he's going to do but he's so fast you can't stop it but he stops it himself with how he lines up, he's the one who gives the defender the chance, it's stupid

    Bertie is a better player

He may well be, but he's still not good enough.

I find it strange that we are even deliberating Coutinho's quality.

That's not because I'm still awe struck by his Inter Milan and Liverpool days.

I simply see him as having that magic and genius that few players are capable of, and while that's far from every moment he's on the ball, he's adequate, if not above average at his worst.

I'm not saying he'll be a raging success here, or that something is amiss if he isn't, because we have a squad that's quite competitive for places up front in attack. He may get overlooked, and even rightfully so.Debating whether the player is able at the level we want and need though isn't really a tough one in my book. He's class.

    This.

  17. There are some seriously good free transfers coming up in the Summer. There might be a few teams bidding decent amounts of money in Jan to tie up those deals a little earlier. The selling club obviously have little choice but to accept.

Not sure we have any chance of attracting the likes of Tielemans and Zaha but always worth a shot!

  18. He’s quietly going about having a very good season.

Started off shaky but the last 6/7 matches I think he’s been close to excellent.

The miss against Leeds still pisses me off though 😉
