Refs currently are the only league employees with a defined benefit pension (put in 20 years, get $50k a year for the rest of your life (or something along those lines); the NFL is thus on the hook if the investments don't perform). The league wants to move them to a defined contribution pension (a set amount gets put by the league into an investment account; the pension payout then depends on the investment performance) like the other league employees. All of NFL network picked the Panthers so it should be interesting to see what they say after the game.
