I love a good gangster flick - mainly due to the really psychotic, sociopathic monsters that are portrayed. For every manic, psychopathic Tommy De Vito there is a cunning, calculating Michael Corleone, and a wannabe like Travis Bickle showing all the traits.

My favourite would have to be Michael Corleone - who in one swift movement killed all of the Corleone family's rivals. He is turned more and more into a loner and by the third (abeit worst) Godfather film, he is insane. Tommy De Vito, Jimmy Conway, Al Capone and of course Tony Montana are also good portrayals, as well as Carlito Brigante.

Nicky Santoro in Casino.

hes just a nutter.

Yeah, was gonna include him - just for the amount of times he says "****"...

....but the stupid poll only allows SIX. Which is poor. Al Capone in The Untouchables was gonna be included too!

Tony Soprano.

Not because he's anywhere near the coolest or even the best at what he does but because the show focuses on the human aspect rather than the crime. I find that a bit more interesting (ok but less fun) then how many people they can brutally murder.

youre no fun :winkold:

I thought the start of the sixth season was excellent with the parallel stories going on, Tony being in a coma and all and trying to find out who he was so he would wake up. However, it did'nt really follow up on the good start very well, and was lost in the crappy story about Vito Spatafore.

So true! :D

tbh i dont think it would work anywhere near as well for a film so it's probably not a fair comparison. Put any of the others into a series and you'll inevitably get more of the human aspect over time anyway.

I think i like the 'normalness' of the life he leads. Once your brought up into that way...you know it's wrong but it becomes an accepted way of life. But it's still a big deal if someone gets killed and everything has to be put through the chain of command and worked out. Alot more realistic then the almost unchecked crime spree's of the films.

And RICO...i dont follow it religiously mate, so probably havent seen much past series 4. I did see Tony wake up from the coma the other day and i thought how much the other characters had descended into comedy gangster characature types. Didnt really work i have to say. Seemed like a bunch of bumbling idiots!

You are probably better off not going past season 4 - it started to all get a bit tired. You should watch a couple from season 5 though - Steve Buschemi is an excellent actor...

I've never watched it consistently so it may be box-set time, which is really the best way to watch drama series anyway imo. Buschemi is a legend! :D

I am shocked that people think that Gangsters just have to be of Italian American descent... Why hasn’t anyone given out a shout for the Kemp Brothers as the Kray Twins....

There was'nt enough poll options - it only allows you to do a measly six!
