Marka Ragnos Posted July 25, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted July 25, 2015 My American friends are trying to decide whether to rent a car and travel from Manchester to Edinburgh in that, or to take the simpler but perhaps less interesting journey by train. They have 4-5 days. If you were going by car and wanted to see some extraordinary scenery, what route would you take? Where would you stop if wanted to hike or hit some lesser known tourist sites? Xann
If it's 5 days to get there. Manchester - Yorkshire Dales - Ask Mike for local info Yorkshire Dales - Lake District Lake District - Newcastle (You've had two days of pretty, just get pissed) Newcastle - Dumfries (Well, it used to be nice. Been a while) Dumfries - Edinburgh via the Moffat Toffee Shop. The crazy chapel in Roslyn from the DaVinci Code can be on this route. If that includes a stay in Edinburgh cut it down. 2-3 days in Edinburgh maybe? Much of interest in Edinburgh does go on within walking distance of the castle, Leith has spread it out a bit. It's been redeveloped and has nice bars and restaurants. You didn't want the touristy stuff, but the castle is a good one with great views. There's catacombs in the old town too.
trekka Posted July 26, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted July 26, 2015 Definitely swing through the Yorkshire Dales if you can. Beautiful place. I recommend taking in Malham (taking the walk up through Janet's Foss, Gordale and back down the limestone pavement), Grassington, Ayrsgarth and then heading to Hawes via Ribblehead and up on through Buttertubs Pass via Hardraw (making sure to stop at the Green Dragon Inn).
