  1. I am so excited with the Academy players coming through now. It has never been better. We have some real top talent and a few of them will be

pushing for a 1st team place very soon, a couple already are. This club is really on the right lines. The future has never been brighter!!

I think that is the very thing we failed to do last season and is a weakness that Smith has. We either win games in style or we lose games. I don't recall too many games where is was a 50/50 game or the opposition had the upper hand and Villa emerged as victors. We need to continue to win our games we are dominating but we must start grinding out results when we are on the back foot

Wolves A, Leicester A  Southampton A Chelsea H Spurs A Sheff Utd H  for instance were all games that we could have lost but ended up winning

Typical of the club. NSWE have chosen to not allow us to progress in my view. If we were going to sign Buendia even if Grealish stayed, then that would have been £30m spent on transfers. Fine. That’s a lot of money, but it’s not going to get us up the table. I’m not convinced we would have purchased Bailey and Ings if we didn’t sell Jack.

Thats not going big to progress, that’s holding back… I’m not saying we needed to spend £200m on new signings, but I did expect us to recruit in a position we desperately needed to fill, which is CM (most probably a defensive minded player). Buying two players to cover two of Jacks skill areas isn’t a proper strategy. It has left us severely unbalanced.

It’s quite evident really and I’m amazed at the people who are saying this has been a successful window. It hasn’t.

You might not want to believe it but Villa knew well before the Euro's that Jack was not staying. The players you mention were bought with that in mind. Smith has even said as much. As for a CDM it has been pretty obvious for years now that Smith does not set his teams up like that. We all have different ideas of how we would like to play but at the end of the day it is down to Dean himself. In his time here he has earned the right to be trusted in this respect. I'm sure the club has tried to sign players, some of which got to the media and some we have no idea about. It is pointless moaning about who we didn't sign and whether we think we are now stronger or weaker. We will soon have all our players fit and can get on with winning some games. Let's all get behind them and have a great season

Can’t believe we have chosen not to strengthen. So typical. Finally look like getting somewhere at the end of last season and then things turn. Going to be such a tough season for us, a relegation scrap looks likely.

So typical of who? Not NSWE They have backed us 100%  Relegation scrap Oh dear What a load of twaddle

    Where's TheTrees at these days.

I got bored and went on FlightRadar just now, a privately owned helicopter left BHX 15 mins ago heading north towards Manchester but destination not listed

Had come from London this morning at 7.24 before leaving at 17:25

A regular at BHX Nothing to do with football

I think a lot of the frustration wouldn’t be here had Bailey have been fit for the opening games. Without him we look clearly light.

And more importantly Watkins We've really missed him

This is the first window since NSWE came in that we've not improved. I honestly think our first XI is worse than the start of last season.

We've improved our squad depth at ST, CB and LB,  replaced Barkley with Buendia (who naturally plays wide right) and taken a massive step-down at LW.

We've not spent a penny. Dean Smith can talk up the youngsters in our squad as much as he wants, but they are miles off being good enough to challenge the top 7.

I can't see anything but a mid-table finish for this team. Which is a shame, as it looked a real chance to kick on.

Your opinion and of course you're entitled to it, but not many Villa fans would agree with much of that

I am. Absolutely. Happiest I've been supporting this club since MON left.

Apart from those MON years, I can't remember a time I've been more excited about our future. A time I've liked so many of our players and manager.

What's there to be unhappy about? You've seen life in the championship. What's so bad about average in the Premier league?

I might get bored of it after a few years. But right now? Iove it. Absolutely love it.

Why can't we all see things like you? You are absolutely right There is nothing to moan about We are on the way up UTV

Match of the day after the Newcastle game. Lineker asks Smith what the aim is and he said improvement on last season. He's said that multiple times. Mings came out and said something similar recently as well

They really aren't. People are making a big deal out of it, because it justifies their moans.

    Well said Spot on

We are so short still . Not partucularly in terms of numbers as we will have 25 which i reckon is fine for a non European football squad.

But in terms of quality where we are standing still in midfield which in reality means going backwards.

Other posters are right in that our youngsters are not ready to hugely effect a premier league game as yet.  Chuk would have had a wake up call yesterday to see just how frenetic premier league football is . Just like Jacob last year. Another 20 appearances over this season and he will hopefully come on leaps and bounds . But if that means a period of consolidation then that means regression most likely in the league table.

Dean likes to develop players. I have a huge doubt that McGinn is going to improve in his 4th season and Luiz and Nakamba in their 3rd with us . He will get an improvement out of Jacob which hopefully will be a big one but thats not going to bridge the gap in my opinion.

But what gap are we "trying to bridge" If you think it's to the top 6 then you will have to be patient. If it's to finish between 11th and 7th or 8th then I think we have enough

The owners can forget Europe this season with this squad. Not happening. The youngsters will be playing alot and the signs are most of them are probably a season away from being ready to contribute and help win games at premier league level, not just play and fill a space I mean actually contribute and help turn a game. I assume we are abiding by FFP rules. Which is hilarious.

If you heard Tyrone Mings interview I don't think Europe was ever in their thinking for this season. He said they just want to improve on last seasons finish and I think that's fair enough

Fair enough. I’d argue that he has absolutely no chance of doing that unless we’ve been relegated (possibly twice).

What a ridiculous post!! If the guy thinks Barry is that good well that's great isn't it. The lad looks good beyond his years. My best mate worked for his Dad so he also knows

a lot about him. By the way my mates Dad was manager when we won the European cup so there is plenty of knowledge there.

    Nakamba is shite.

Carney and Ramsey should be loaned out and have another championship club blood our youngsters that's what the top teams do.

We need proven quality in the CDM area to push on.

Its frustrating we always lack that final piece of the jigsaw and with these new owners and their "ambitions" i really thought we would seal the deal for once.

Marvelous thanks you for your kind words and reminds you that he had 2 brilliant performances in the last 2 games of last season!!

Liverpool tend to keep their top youngsters and quite a few of them played quite a lot last year and they didn't do too bad did they?

Very naive to put our hopes on our youngsters.

Was evident Carney is not ready to be starting games. Won't be too hard on a kid but he looked lost out there if I'm being honest and is in a desperate need of a loan. Guy got talent but he isn't quite ready yet. Not at this level.

Club should be adaptive and be able to have a change in their initial transfer plans. We're in an extraordinary situation right now, with an abnormal amount of injuries. I'd take some so called panic buys at this point. Mainly ion midfield. Whether it's loans or whatever I don't care. We just need someone that can play in midfield at this level.

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.

Paul Merson said he was "Outstanding" on Saturday and I'll wager he knows a tad more about things than you
