  1. Not sure if this should be in this section or the Olympics, but as I imagine specialised cyclists are in here I'll post....

Just watching the men's omnium race, and can understand how it all works.. One thing that is confusing though Is how the Danish rider got 6th place...yes he lapped the peloton and so understandably "made a lap" but he also crashed and missed a few laps..does he not have to make those up?

He has 5 laps to rejoin the pack, due to the fact things are moving so quick (15 secs per lap ish) he would have no chance of ever making up the laps.

I just think it is a bit Unfair that he can then lap the peloton to gain a lap, when in theory he is a few laps behind...

  2. but he also crashed and missed a few laps..does he not have to make those up?

I'm no expert on the Omnium but I believe he is allowed a couple of laps out in the event of crash or mechanical. As for the rest ...... no idea !!

It's not so much breathing that tires me out but my calfs become very tight...any experts no any recommended activities/stretches to avoid this when cycling?

Hmm - again not a real expert would suggest a couple of possibilities.

First - you are using muscles that you ain't used for a while and I reckon it will improve.

Second - yep stretch before a ride - possibly that one where you stand on a stairstep on your toes and lower and raise (see YouTube)

Third (and poss the best) make sure you aren't pushing too big a gear - so large sprocket on the back and high(ish) cadence (like Lance Armstrong :D )

Are you on Mountain bike or road bike?

Will check out the stretches thanks...

It's a mountain bike (but I use that term loosely) it is about 20 yrs old, so has 18 gears but no suspension or anything like that.

On a non related Olympics note I recently taken to cycling a couple days a week to work as due to dodgy knees have had to stop playing football and doing the odd run... 4. Has anybody mentioned Lee Chung-Yong from Bolton as an option? I know he spent last year out injured but the year before he looked like a cracking winger

My other hopeful signing would be Martin Olson from Blackburn, both these guys surely arent gonna want to spend the year anywhere other than a top-flight club

Yeah Lee looked pretty decent and would be a decent addition if not too expensive...would also look at Holden at Bolton, again though there may be concerns over the fitness of both

  5. VILLA: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Warnock, El Ahmadi, Bannan, Ireland, Holman, Delfouneso, N'Zogbia. Subs: Given, Bent, Delph, Gardner, Lichaj, Stevens, Carruthers, Baker, Johnson, Weimann

  6. Does anyone else think it's unfair that Pistorius is running in the Olympics? Good on him for battling through and doing so well to get to the Olympics with his disability, yet it isn't really an equal playing field in my opinion. He has no lower leg muscles and therefore can't have anything happen in that region. All of the other athletes have muscle there that they have to use...

I actually think fair play to him. He has been through numerous tests to prove that he has no benefit from the "blades"

  7. So can anyone explain how the track can be "fast".. Obvioulsy different weather conditions can affect the running speed, but how can the track per se (I was under the impression all international tracks are made of the same material)

  8. Think in a team that's is playing passing possession football he will be extremely good for us...him, el ahmadi and Ireland could link up very well....

The only concern I would have is how those three would work when needing to regain possession, or against a team that stops us passing.

that depends on how PL organises them, you don't have to be a massive bastard to win the ball back. look at barca when they lose the ball, or what about makalele? remember him, he wasn't exactly built like a brick shit house was he?

if PL can get this group to run well off the ball and hunt in packs, there's no reason why bannan and ireland can't be very usefull in teh defensive phase too. i know they aren't exactly noted for tackling, but organised well applying pressure and closing space then they can help get it back plenty well enough IMO.

I never actually mentioned size......I agree that with some good organisation it could work, just think in some games we may need an extra body in there (maybe just going with one up front). But then we have all been told that PL likes to change formations and tactics so hopefully he will pick up on what's needed.

Hope BB Will have a big season

  10. MikeyP, thats what players are obviously being purchased for to be better than what we have, we currently have no player to cover Vlaar, to get a player better than Vlaar we need to spend 10million or so, if he gets injured, we'll move Lowton inside or Herd, to be fair Ayala is better than both in that position.

I can get your point, but what about signing a first choice cb to play with Vlaar, meaning that the backup would be Clark and Baker. This would encourage Clark and Baker to work harder to achieve first team status.

I'm not saying we shouldn't go for Ayala if PL wants him, too be honest I haven't seen much of him to know how good he is. All i'm saying is that we shouldn't buy players just to be a backup. I'd hope that anyone who is signed is going to be challenging to be first choice.

  11. Decent enough to be back up.

It's that type of signing that gets us in financial trouble though (not Ayala per se, but signing players as backup)

We should be looking to sign players better than what we currently have, who can come in and start the season.. It is then up to existing players to prove that they are worthy of getting in, thus increasing competition for places and avoid complaceny that we have previously had.

  12. Given

    Lowton - Vlaar - Clark - Warnock

    Bannan - KEA

    Homan - Ireland

    Bent - Delfounso

This isn't what I would do (warnock would be out), but based on players we have in so far, feel this is how PL will go.

When we have possession from a Goal Kick, ball played short to CB's, Bannan and KEA will drop deep to pick up possession, Holman or Ireland will pull wide with the opposite full back pushing on.

  13. Would like us to sign

    Lb: Cresswell/ Bennett/ Erik Pieters

    St: Gary Hooper/ Wilfred Zaha/ Rhodes/ Guidetti

Cm: Mark Davies/ Lewis McGugan/ Jake Livermore

    Cb: Tom Lees/ Caulker

Wng: Georgi Chanturia/ Sinclair/ Tom Ince/ Matt Philipps

    Out

    Hutton, Warnock, Makoun??

Would have a decent team tbh with depth but a team pretty youthful!

Don't forget the 25 man squad rule.. we stand at 23 inc Petrov currently. Which leaves room for 2 more signings without any departures.

Would Petrov be registered in the 25 man squad though? I know they will keep in as number 19 (rightly so) and still have him as club captain, but would they register him in there? If things improve he can always be registered in January, but in all honestly he will never play a premierleague game for us again and however unsentimental it is PL may require that space given to someone else...

  14. There doesn't seem to be much praise for Holman on here, maybe due to who bought him.

Think it may also be that very little has been seen of him, or the team as a whole, so at the moment he is a relative unknown

  15. I was saying something similar yesterday. Why are we strictly 'Team GB', rather than just '[Great] Britain'? I guess it's to make us seem more united as a nation, particularly since we're holding the event, but I've started to find it annoying. /old man rant (I blame Mike's influence)

I've said that myself... They don't say "team australia" or "team America" (even though that would be funny, America **** yeah!!)

Didn't realise I was inspirational though :winkold:

  16. Chris Heard isn't tall enough to play CB in my opinion.
I wouldn't put him there normally, but I think he's a decent player to call upon if needed. He may not have the height but he's by far the best jumper in the team.

At 5'8 he is too short to play CB unless it is an absolute emergency in my view, if he comes up against someone like Carroll, Adebayor or Fellaini (there are plenty of others) he would get destroyed no matter how good he is at getting in the air.

He isn't a CB in my view and shouldn't be used as such.

Fabio Cannavaro was only 5'9, so height isn't always important as a cb...obviously not saying Herd is anything like Cannavaro just saying :D

For what it's worth I agree Herd's position is not cb
