  1. Well, after a day's shock and a few hours reflection, I've concluded that I'm done with the UK. I'm pulling a Sturgeon. As far as I'm concerned it was the English wot done this and if they want an intolerant, regressive society that scoffs at experts, then they can go ahead and have it. I'm done. I'm out. Stuff the Union, I hope it disintegrates sooner rather than later. Stuff the Tories and stuff Labour and stuff the rest of them. I don't care anymore. They no longer serve my interests. In the medium term I hope that sense prevails in NI and we strike some deal with the Republic, but chances are the unionists will be stubborn asshats and will rather see the country go down the drain than give Dublin a bigger say. In any case, I aim to move down south and be part of a wider community again. However flawed the EU may be, their values are my values. I can no longer confidently say that about the UK.

  2. He is a very shrewd operator and would be a complete disaster as PM but as a floppy haired posh tit he has the appeal of a burnt toe to most voters north of Oxford. Not that the Tories need to bother contesting those regions as Labour's current performance suggests a real struggle against UKIP in the old heartlands, especially now Farage and co have wind in their sails.

    Tory/UKIP coalition. Joy.

  3. Voter apathy toward the establishment will give Trump a chance but I think a big turnout among minorities in swing states is likely, favouring Hilary. Trump is hated by a lot of people and he isn't raising much money at all either.

  4. guy on Guardian podcast made an interesting point about the problem now facing the brexit lot: because they've been clear as mud about what they actually mean by brexit, everyone who voted that way has a different idea or expectation of what brexit meant. so, chances are when they finally get around to negotiations they're going to make a lot of people unhappy. i predict the UK won't get out completely and there will be a compromise and concessions from both sides, especially if it is boris leading the team. remain in the single market and still pay a bit into europe but take back border controls and a bonfire of red tape is my guess at this stage.

  5. I'm concerned about the situation here in NI. I hope at least that there won't be a visible border, checkpoints, and a return of the army to man it. Although I can't see a good alternative - maybe stricter control at ports? Yeah, I can really see the unionists merrily whip out their passports to get into England. Aside from that, economically the country is **** without big EU subsidies and Westminster certainly don't care enough to pay up. The border counties are in a spot of bother. I think, despite what the DUP say, that there will be a border poll within the decade if the issues aren't resolved in a considered and meaningful way.

I guess the Labour party could just ask the media who they would like to be Labour leader.

It'll save a lot of time and bother.

I'm not even sure that 'media friendly' counts for anything anymore, and frankly I'm not sure if people are all that bothered about who leads Labour because the trust is gone completely. The people they need to win have decided to vote against their own economic interests because of, well, xenophobia. Labour can't win them back using UKIP's argument, so they need to reframe the debate altogether, but every time they've attempted to highlight (correctly) that bad governance and austerity caused the problems in post-Industrial England, it has fallen on deaf ears because it's just one side blaming the other yet again. At this perilous moment, the UK needs a strong left and I don't think we'll get that any time soon unless someone comes along and finds a way to connect with 'traditional' Labour voters without being a reactionary populist.

  7. It'll be a big decision for Labour as their next leader will almost certainly be leading them into an election. Corbyn could well hang on if he gets himself on the ballot, which apparently his lawyers are looking at now, but that would be a disaster imo. He just doesn't appeal to the working class despite his largely agreeable politics. I think, in order to ensure that the Tory bastards aren't free to wreck the place after 2018, the left may have to suck it up and accept a middle ground character to ensure at least a somewhat progressive government.

  8. Incidentally I think the 'voted for leave but didn't expect it to happen' lot are idiots of the highest **** order but capture something of the mood of the political class. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a compromise and the UK remains part of the single market rather than pulling out completely.

  9. You have two years, possibly longer, to GTFO if you so desire. I do, and will next year I think. Though it's somewhat easier for me as I just have to hop on a train. Suppose the English have an easy option too if Scotland jump ship sometime soon.
