well, the world is better for a variety of reasons that in it was decades and centuries ago, and that is reason to be cheerful, but it does feel like we are currently teetering on the brink of something pretty awful, and that is the sense even if we forget about the gradually unfolding nightmare that is climate change's effect on the planet.

Wijnaldum is considerably better than both Veretout and Gueye. Questionable attitude, however.

is the world really getting worse

Enjoying The Night of, can already kind of sense where the story is going to go but it's a show less about the story than it is about having a cold hard look at the system, like The Wire and Show Me A Hero. Not really a True Detective successor, at least two episodes in. Not sold on John Turtorro as of yet as he seems to have swooped in from a Coen brother's movie.
As for the mystery:
I think Naz did it, but will get off because key evidence will have been dismissed or something. The show will really have to do something impressive to make an alternative killer believable imo.

Standard approach for him to spend all the money and claim tactical genius when it goes right.
Yeah, yeah Porto blah blah.

Probably for the best if he just isn't going to be able to reach the required level, which is understandable really. Shame, but it would be nice to give him a coaching role because he's a solid professional and a good human being.

"A total of 183,541 applications were made to join the Labour Party as registered supporters in the last 48 hours"
For comparison, according to that man Crick, that is more than the entire Tory party membership (130,000 - 150,000).

Could be decent. Need a new striker for sure.

In somewhat related news, the US accidentally blew up 60 odd Syrians, including children.

I think we'll see some generous new powers given to Erdogan and before long a few (or many) plotters, or alleged plotters, will be hung and the Rubicon will be well and truly crossed.
Sure Putin will be chuffed if Turkey are booted out of Nato as a result of all this, although that's a bit of a long shot.

Corbyn represents a change from the current status quo and for that reason I hope he wins and learns from his mistakes. Smith is basically Miliband without the Miliband problem of being a weird looking dork.

I just hope we don't reach the end of the window hoping Ayew will be our main striker for the season, as I can see a late bid from a team desperate to bolster their ranks after the first few games make some holes apparent.

It starts with a man going to great lengths to ensure no one takes the piss out of him and it will end in mass incarceration and dictatorship.

New season is disturbingly in sight. Time to get a move on with new players, chaps.

Don't worry I'm sure the UK is licking its lips at the prospect of selling Erdogan a bunch of military gear to keep his subjects in check.
Reporter: Um, why you do this?
PM: Well we wouldn't have got as good a deal as we did without a discount on some shiny new gear.

What the world could do with now is a few serious heads to tackle the problem.

Oh and Paul Rudd is the worst screen presence ever. He drains life from my very being never mind the screen. I wish he never happened (as an actor, not as a person like).
-
Same issue that most of Nolan's films have, and coupled with his penchant for unbearable exposition heavy dialogue you end up with a pretty overrated film-maker. Still, he takes risks and knows how to make impressive cinematic experiences so his films are always worth seeing on the big screen. It's a real shame that very few of his films have any real depth, though..

Smith, like Cameron, is a PR man and I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled off an upset if he finds a way to sell his image. Corbyn starts a long way in front but unless he comes out with some strong policy proposals, that lead will be chipped away at all summer.

That's Turkey stuffed then.

It got people talking about something other than Trump being the nominee & the divisions within the party.

That's different to how I see it. I think Europe is absolutely not shifting to the right. I think it's polarising to both the left and the right. The same thing to an extent seems to be happening in America. There's (at least) 2 different things going on. There's a move to the left which is basically down to the economy and unfairness and inequality and cronyism and elites stitching things up and ordinary people paying for the bankers misdeeds.
Then because of war and terrorism there's a move to the right, a fear of foreigners, muslims, minorities and people seemingly wanting to have "control". The terrorism acts as a recruiting agent for the right wing extremists and to a degree so does the poverty and inequality as they use immigrants (or indeed the EU) as the thing to blame for the poverty, when neither is true, but it makes an easy target.
I agree that Europe is becoming more and more polarized but in my pessimistic world view I think the right & wealthy elite have elections more or less sown up for the near future and save some populist lefties breaking through, policy in EU countries will largely remain the same: protect the system and shift blame to the Other. Now, I don't think many governments actually want to punish those they blame to win elections, discrimination tends to be a bit more insidious now (a denied visa here, a stop and search there...) but they may find they have no choice when anger grows and people demand change and the only change they think will help is to, you guessed it, send the Other home etc.
Chop chop! Lets all gawp at Newcastle (again)

If they get £35m for Sissoko they might collectively pass out from laughter & slip into brief comas and give us a decent head start in the promotion race.
