  1. Keeping continuity and slowly introducing and easing new players in (rather than throwing a load of new faces together). No, I wouldnt have picked it but fair play, still confident that our style amd energy is going to surprise them today.

Not sure DDID. I just recall seeing him quoted somewhere as saying that he wouldn't allow the club to overpay for Maupay after overpaying for Mings.

    From the dean smith thread

Dean Smith did a Q and A tonight, my family went. Work permits sorted for Doug  and Marv, they’ll be in Germany, and we are looking for a striker. He can’t recommend that the club buy Maupay at Brentford’s asking price and we overpaid for Mings because it was like having your son held to ransom.

I think we can all agree this guy needs a full injury-free season on loan in the Championship. Consistently starting 30-40 games would do him the world of good.

Don't want to be harsh but if he's loaned to a Championship side I doubt he would get 30-40 games.

McGinn not starting yesterday was very strange!

I don't think there is anything strange about it. He was one of the last players back in training. More than a week after the other lads.

Last week, no one was playing more than 45 mins.

Southampton have brought through a hell of a lot of youth players, they're one of the best in the country in terms of their academy and bringing through youth. This guy's 23 and hasn't managed to make much of an impression in 5 years.

This seems like a lot of money for a PL fringe player. When the other teams fans are rubbing their hands together, delighted with the money they've got for one of their players, it's a worrying sign. To be fair to him, he was good at Fulham, so hopefully he can make the step up as a regular starter.

I honestly don't think thats an indicator though. Ward prowse was/still is shit according to most of their fans and was often a bench player but he was being touted for england this season.  My mate is a southampton fan and they have been absolute dirge for the past few years. I know from our final few years in the Prem how easy it is for the more technical players/less physical players to get cast aside and labelled as shite but then thrive when they move to a club with players that can give a f**k and actually pass a football.

  6. Noy surprised Soton didnt see the best of him. Hes a player whos strength is his passing and crossing abiltity. He'll thrive in a more creative team like he did at Fulham where they played football and had a proper target man to make the most of his crossing ability.

You couldnt find a more useless strikeforce than Southampton's for much of last season.  He'd be in the final 3rd look up and have nothing to aim at. Take away any players strengths and they will look average.

You are wrong in my opinion. Countless players get slated in one team and excel in another with different manager and different football.

As an example I give you Albrighton. Apparantly not good enough for us. I still remember the stick he got.

Grealish was shit according to many not too many moons ago.

  8. Over the past few years west brom have had more england youth internationals than most Prem clubs without scouting outside of the Midlands apparently.

Dan Ashworth, who moved to the FA was the brainchild of the overhaul to their setup a decade ago but perhaps villa have seen Harrison's involvement (who would have implemented Ashworth's plans on the ground) and been impressed. It may be a case of wanting to steal what Ashworth did amd seeing harrison as the perfect man to implement it here.

There's a bbc article covering their sucesss with some comments from harrison.

In an era when big clubs recruit teenagers from overseas and claim them as academy products, a true grow-your-own plan conceived by Dan Ashworth over a decade ago looks set to bear fruit just in time to breathe fresh life into West Bromwich Albion.

  9. Would love Phillips here.

But tbh, as he is only 23, and a leeds fan (I assume) he should stay there for one more season imo, and leave if they dont go up.  I'd be very confident they'd get promoted next year so that would seem like the wisest move to me. I think the player would see it that way too so can't see it happening.

Still, us being linked with him will wind up the bitter Leeds fan who always comes on here, which is good. 😄

Remember when we bought a "Marquee Striker" called "Ormondroyd",  Oh how we laughed when we found out he was actually an integral weight bearing element of a Circus tent and not a Marquee after all.

God he was useless. He did go on to have a decent Korea after Villa tbf.

  11. All this levels stuff reminds me of when we were appointing Dean Smith.

From what i have seen of him, his dribbling and his shooting is top tier, even by prem standard, add to he is an intelligent footballer gets assists and is a mad villa fan. What's not to like? He would suit our style of play perfectly imo.
