Has Unai said he wants him?

Has he said he doesn’t? I don’t know either way or care until a player comes through the door (or doesn’t)

I try to not to get caught up in internet speculation.

After listening to La Liga guy on All Villa No Filler podcast I'll take his take on Pau Torres not being combative enough CB. That would be really bad in PL

Happy to take Unai’s lead on this one over some bloke on a podcast, if Unai thinks he’s good enough then he’s good enough.

Was he? Yet everything you read is that he was such a positive influence to players. Yes he was on a lot of money and was injured, but he can’t help that.  There were a lot worse players in the squad at the time than Richards, just off the top of my head…

Bacuna - fought his team mates on the pitch, pushed a linesman, posting videos going round bham airport in a scooter short time after games

    Lescott - the car picture

Gabby - Mr Aston Villa who put in zero effort, who deliberately laughed at managers and refused to do what they asked.

    Yes

    We need better

Look at the CF's that scored more goals than him last season in the PL, we are not going to get better. Watkins isn't the problem we simply need more goals from other attacking players to complement what he is doing.

Chambers would surely be ideal pick up for Forest or Sheffield United playing a back 3. We signed him for nominal fee so anything like 5m would be decent enough.

He would be a good pick up for sure, but as a squad member we could do a lot worse.

Surely at least one of Chambers, Nakamba and Dendoncker (Iroegbunam) will be moved on this summer. Especially the first two if we are also bringing in a new CB. (Not suggesting a new CB will have anything to do with Nakamba)

Nakamba and Sanson are likely to either get sold or if no takers another loan, I can see Dendonker and Chambers being kept around both are seasoned pros and with Thursday night football we will need squad depth.

I disagree. I don’t think he’s a bad player but we can always improve.

Of course we can always improve, we don't have a single player who can't be improved upon. Dendoncker is a good player and brings a lot to a squad I'm happy for him to be part of it next season and definately don't see replacing/upgrading him as anywhere near a priority.

When a good player moves on a free, the player gets the expected transfer fee as a signing bonus. We didn't get him for free.

    Doesn't quite work like that.

Yeah fair enough...well I've just watched a YT vid of him, as not seen loads of him before. Tbh, he looks to have more to his game than I thought he did. Very tidy player.

You probably shouldn't form opinions of players based on YouTube vids they aren't the best marker on how to judge a player.

I’ve got a feeling that Diego may leave this summer. We are likely to sign a starting centre back which could potentially push Diego back to fourth choice. I suspect he will not be happy with that and I also feel that it’s not a good position for the club to be in, having such an expensive resource so far down the food chain. They’ll maybe want to sell him before his value totally plummets.
It’ s also much better to have Chambers as fourth choice. He is likely to be more accepting of that position, he offers cover at right back and centre mid too. He is also fairly low value and won’t suffer from a vastly depreciated transfer value like Diego.

I obviously don’t know anything but I also think it’s odd that he didn’t get hardly any game time after his injury. Unai said that he was ready but never played him. If he was in the plans, I’m sure he would have been used a bit more often. It just feels like a good time to cash in.

I don't think he will leave, but he probably will and should be 3rd choice CB next season Konsa has done more than enough this season to cement a starting place next season, so unless we buy a new outstanding CB I don't see any changes in the CB pairing of the 6th/7th best defence in the league.

Will he come here? He would jump at the chance, I will guarantee he will not get a better option, the system currently played is perfect for him all the other better clubs play an attacking right back

The 'will he come here' wasn't aimed at him making a decision on whether to come or not but an observation I believe we aren't likely to be looking at PL players.

Been thinking about the Right Back situtation following the Ashley Young news. Caveat: this is based purely on my opinion of what I think Emery is looking for in that RB position, mainly:
     - Someone who can play "on an island". That is, they can be trusted in 1v1 situations.
     - Defensive attributes and ball retention is more important than attacking output.
And some club transfer requirements we've seen over past few years.
     - Top division experience.
     - European experience preferred.
     - If large fee required, not close to 30 in age.

Also, these are all external options. I think Cash can absolutely still play there for us. I think Konsa could play there. Kessler... might be too soon for him. Also, there are more options out there for sure, these are just ones I've highlighted (for fun).

    The Best Option
    Aaron Wan Bissaka - 25 - Manchester United - £25-£35m
One of the best 1v1 full backs in the Premier League. Has one year left on his contract so fee would not be outlanding.
Dalot has today just got a new long-term contract and United are also looking at Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkeusen, as Ten Hag opts for more attacking output from this position.

    The Familiar Option
    Juan Foyth - 25 - Villarreal - £46m release clause
No longer the young player who had a rough time at Spurs in his first experience in the Premier League, Foyth played for Emery at Villarreal, in this system, so knows exactly what is required of the role.
Has all the physical and technical attributes needed. Villarreal have said they wont negotiate below his release clause this summer.

    A La Liga Option
    Arnau Martinez - 20 - Girona - £17m release clause
At 19 he was a starter for Girona in their promotion year last year, and has continued to play there this year in La Liga where Girona have played great - challenging for a European spot.
Well rounded athlete. Converted from a centre back - has good defensive instincts. Definitely more defensive minded than offensive, but still more than capable of a clever progressive pass or good cross.
In the Spain U-21 squad for this summer's Euros which could affect any potential transfer timing (Starts June 21st).

    A Project Option
    Lutsharel Geertruida - 22 - Feyenoord - est. £15-£25m
Much like Wan-Bissaka, Geertruida is very good in 1v1 situations.  His tackle win% is very high. He's got the raw pace and strength to match up well against opponents.
Comfortable in possession without ever being truly dynamic. He's a CB still converting to RB, or rather could play there - he's played for Feyernoord at both positions recently.
Still has plenty of room to develop in the full back role. The potential is there.

    A Cheaper Option
    Devyne Rensch - 20 - Ajax - est. £10m+
Coming through the youth ranks of Ajax you can see that he is very technically capable. Demonstrates a good awareness of the game, taking up good positions defensively.
Has versatility too. Can play left back or even centre back (despite his stature).
Has only been a more full time starter this season. You have to do a bit more projecting with him going forward, more of a gamble project than Geertruida in my opinion.

    A Wonderkid Option
    Amar Dedic - 20 - RB Salzburg - est. £10-£20m
As well as being tremendous defensively, he is fantastic going forward.
Whilst perhaps not the out and out defensive type I think we're looking for, this is the type of player Brighton would sign this summer, then sell to City for £75m within 24 months.

AWB for me all day long, he's an outstanding defensive RB I used to love watching him at Palace hasn't really worked out at Manure more through the systems they have wanted to play than ability. He'd slot straight into the systen Unai wants to play.

Will he come? I doubt it I just feel we won't be looking at PL players more at hidden gems from La Liga at beyond.

I’d be disappointed in so much as the club may have missed out on a target they wanted but I’ll probably have forgotten about the fact we were even linked by the end of the transfer window (as long as it doesn’t turn into a massive drawn out saga). He’s not a player I know really well and it sounds like he’s likely to go/stay abroad so he’s not going to score against us any time soon.

But it's all media BS so we will probably really never know if we had serious interest.
