gone to be 2nd choice keeper at boro...

not sure why there is an outpouring of "thanks" and "ignore our idiot fans" from some of the better fan brigade on twitter, he was a massive part in why we went down, he was a massive part of why our defence has been shit for years, having no confidence in your keeper has a massive impact on the decision making of the back 4 and they looked shakey enough as it is

He has been awful the last 2 seasons and ultimately he had to go, from both his and Villa's point of view. His whole time with us hasn't been as bad as that though. Came onto the scene as a decent shit stopper but extremely shaky at crosses, he worked on this massively. When he was released and resigned it looked a master stroke, and it probably was for a short period he was excellent. Until the last couple of seasons he was keeping us in some games and helping us win much needed points as we struggled.

He lost his confidence and got worse and worse and our last few mangers had all lost confidence in him, he had to go. I suspect he may play fair bit for Boro if he gets a chance and takes advantage of a fresh start.

Doesn't this £40m replace a much larger revenue figure which we received in the premier league? Even with wage cuts etc. I'd have thought this would be needed for running costs and the idea of the parachute payments was to ensure that once relegated a team wasn't immediately threatened with huge losses and potential insolvency issues..

This may be completely wrong, that's just what I thought they were there for. I wouldn't have thought the premier league would just dish out £40m for teams to buy players with.

Of course it does. If if was just an extra  £40m that was available to spend on players. It would make it a profitable excercise to get relegated, which it far from isn't.

What happened when Arsenal bid a quid above Suarez release clause and plop told them to do one?

I believe Liverpool termed the clause in the contract very well and made it to say any club was entitled to speak to Suarez if they bidded over £40m. It wasn't an actual release clause. So although Arsenal could speak to Suarez, Liverpool could tell Arsenal where to go.

He wasn't even average by PL standards, I really do think he is over rated by many on here.

I think its pretty hard to judge how bad/good(term used loosely) players actually were individually last season when collectively they were shocking. Ayew at least showed a bit of fight and glimpses of quality, but in terms of how good he is, I think we have no idea.

Well, I am more of an optimist - I read it as "We need to get rid of the dead wood. We will continue to sign new players until the window closes. 3 to 4 will be signed next week, when we will inform you of their names". That sounds nice and positive. I can sleep easier tonight.

That's how I read it first and now still can't decide on how I think it should be interpreted.

I neither see us signing 3 or 4 players this week or do I see it that Villa are going to tell 3 or 4 players they aren't wanted.

My attempt at something possibly realistic but a complete guess is

We need to make the squad smaller and then we hope to sign 3 or 4 players before the window ends. I'll know more next week. You can say farewell to the old days of the Lerner era, I'm the boss now and everything is good.

Legitimately angry at the news. It would not hurt to have him in the squad. He does not have to play 90 minutes every game or really at all. Let him be the locker room general, our Juwan Howard (NBA). That role is important even if he does not touch the field.

Angry really? Like most I'm disappointed but this decision wouldn't have been taken lightly and only guessing but I think Petrov would have been involved in the decision too. He really has to reach a certain level to be in the squad and he probably feels he's not quite there.

It was a big ask for any 37 year old especially not been in the game for several years let alone what he has gone through.

Hopefully there is a role for him in the club but I'd also like him to not give up now depending on how he feels, try at a slightly lower level, which will be no less impressive.

He has been an inspiration to all despite not making his goal.

Merely having an actual football manager in charge of pre season will mean we're noticeably better than last season even of we signed nobody

You're not wrong. I think it will make a massive difference.

Correct and that is why I said we should accept a free transfer if an offer is on the table

Haha I'm glad your not running the club. Your opinion on players ability doesn't come into it, some still have some sale value and just like the club aren't going to pay off several players contracts, they are also not going to just give them away.

So, those of you convinced we wouldn't have been relegated if we moved to get big Sam in, still feel that way in light of these rumours?!

I think it depends what point. My opinion is that he wouldn't have kept us up if he came instead of Sherwood the previous season. Although it was never going to happen If we started the season with him then yes and instead if Garde probably, yes. Although we would have had to of got rid of Sherwwod sooner wouldn't we before Alladyce went to Sunderland?

  10. Jealous of my neighbours today, their garden goes right down to the Avon in Bath and they were out having a barbecue and jumping in the river. Mines a rented house, beyond my garden is 30ft of thick scrubland, so I would be covered in nettle stings and scratches to get anywhere near the river bank.

**** me. People are genuinely advocating spending £30m paying players off.

I'm outta here till something happens.

It was never going to happen was it. How many players on premier league contracts have been paid off by their clubs? I doubt there are many, then there will be even less that have been paid off with more than 1 year left on their contract and then has any club paid off more than one player at the same time?

I have no idea what these figures are but I imagine they are pretty low, and people expect Villa to pay off several players.

  12. I still have no idea how good/bad he is, he's really not played enough to get a true indication. I do believe though, played regularly he'd certainly get in double figures, but I also think that Gabby would get double figures if he has found some drive. However we need our striker(s) to be getting 20+ Goals. Overall I think he's worth his place in the squad at this level.

  13. I've mentioned before but I'm terrible at interviews. Which makes getting a job really hard for me as I work in hospitality/catering, so coming across confident and talk well is in someways more important than the skills and experience I have, which is pretty good. I had to have an interview for an in house promotion a while back, which was probably one of the worse I've done. The fact that I am good at my job was the only reason I got it, if I didn't work there I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have got the job. It was worse than my original interview with them, which I've since found I was second choice.

I've had 2 opportunities this week. One I really want, which wasn't my worse interview but still wasn't as good as I wanted. I was hoping to hear something Friday which hasn't happened, so not ruled it out but lost a bit of hope.

The second I've not been offered but I think is mine if I want it, when I speak to them again next week.

I've been looking for a new role for a while as I wanted to sort it before I started hating my current job. I've reached that point though now and really want to leave. This role is a little more money and will give me some new experience but I'm really not sure what the opportunities are going to be like in the future. I'd rather not go into a job knowing I'd have to leave a company to progress. There's always a chance it will happen but I at least want there to be some opportunity.

The role that I might not get, did excite me and is something I would get a lot out of and career potential is unlimited. This is making the other one seem wrong for me, I'm not sure whether that is a good or bad thing.

Ha, I've stayed off the lager for a few days as it always gives me a headache the next day, hence the tame ales! :)

Don't mind ales, but not really a fan of bitters and don't like Green King IPA at all and a 3.6% IPA ain't right, even for traditional British IPA.

I think RDM said he would work with existing squad. Where as other managers probably wanted a rip up and start again

I would be surprised if any potential manager said that the only option is to get everyone out and start again. Each one of them like the original point made would have confidence in their managing ability to get more out of last seasons players.

If any of them said that, I'm not surprised they never got the job.
