O'Neill hits out at Nakamura link
GLENN GIBBONS
MARTIN O'Neill reacted angrily yesterday to reports that he had approached Celtic with a view to taking Shunsuke Nakamura to Aston Villa. The former Parkhead manager was clearly irate over regular media speculation linking him with plundering his former club.
"I've been told this morning that I'm supposed to be interested in Shunsuke Nakamura," O'Neill said. "Let me tell you categorically it is a load of complete tosh. I have not been near Celtic for the player and I won't be.
"It's just too easy for people in the media to connect me with raiding Celtic for players, and it really is becoming a bit much. Be assured the latest stories about me and Nakamura are pure invention.
"I think people in the media simply guess about which type of player this manager or that manager wants and, in my case, make the connection with Celtic, and come up with fantasy. I'm really pretty fed up with it."
Nakamura drew admiring glances from English Premiership clubs when his brilliant free-kick inflicted a 1-0 defeat on Manchester United in the Champions League. He went on to collect a clutch of player of the year awards, but has also been troubled by inconsistent form.
Last week, Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said the club was in a strong enough financial condition to be able to reject any offers for leading players such as Nakamura.
O'Neill was at Kilmarnock on the final day of the season, where the home side beat Hearts 1-0.
Farewell to the Nakamura link.

I really can't see us signing 9 players.
More like a maximum of 6. I think you may be disappointed this summer if your expecting that many.
Then again, I'd be happy to be proved wrong
-
It is a bit insane
One thing I do tend to ponder from time to time. If not Bellamy or Defoe, then who?
-
It's probably not true (the Sneijder link) but it would be some extreme coup if we did sign him
-
Nutter
The Barton deal is just pathetic. Typical Barcodes.
If all goes well with the NRC transfer I'll be chuffed without doubt. I'd rather have a young star than Barton who is, without doubt, an idiot. Or Parker who even showed at Charlton that when things don't go his way. He jumps about like a girl.
Well done MON

Do do do do.....Nigel Reo-Coker.....do do do do......
Woah. I think he'll sign but aren't you getting a bit ahead of yourself?
-
That's from "TalkingSoccer". It's hardly a credible source.
-
we should show intrest in morton gamst pederson he is class and probaly wont be to pricey MON could shock us with pederson
You'll probably get shouted at for calling him the wrong name now mate
-
If you think Barton and Parker have rejected us without even speaking you are an idiot.
I could see Parker rejecting us if the rumours of him wanting to go back to London are true, but Barton rejecting us?! No chance.
The reason we are not in for them, if we aren't is because MON has someone else lined up, who he feels will be better acquisitions for AVFC than Joey Barton or Scott Parker. It won't be because they rejected us. Not a chance!
Completely agree.
It was after all, from football365.
-
If MON can get Sneijder I think he will move any player in his way. Sneijder is class and if he plays on the left then Barry can go into the middle and Young take care of the right side.
so where would we fit in Reo Coker and Petrov then ?
Keep them in rotation.
It's better to gave a selection of good players for cover rather than one play per position and then having trouble when one gets injured.
-
what about fred from lyon????????????
Seen nothing about this.
Purely speculation from the comical OS message boards.
-
But for £20 million?
-
It's not like he's been transfer listed because WHU don't need him though. He's been transfer listed by request and I'm sure they wouldn't have minded hanging onto him.
NRC is a quality player and will progress and become better and better.
Could be a more energetic version of Makelele IMO.
Let's just hope it's true

Van Der Vaart would be a massive signing. I would definitely be wearing his shirt next season if we got him. He's a very good player. Fingers crossed!
What shirt would he be wearing then?
:winkold:
He can wear the away shirt, i'll wear the home shirt... actually with the away shirt being an 82 replica i'll probably want both... Claret and Blue body paint?
Bwahahaha!

As far as i'm concerned we only need three players,
A fast goalscoring striker - Defoe/Bellamy/Bent.
A proper center mid, a hard bastard - Sidwell/Barton/Parker
And a right back - Jagielka/Young.
All the other players we will sign are just improvements on what we have. And I trust MON to make quality signings to push the current first team players out.
-
Just because we might no be able to compete for the dogs of Europe doesn't mean we have to snoop for has beens on free transfers.
We have a huge cash backing now, We don't need somebody like Fowler. He's so far past it it's untrue.

Where's this bad reputation for NRC coming from?
Has he done something wrong?
Please tell me.
-
Pablo - They were just examples
I think Scott Parker may be, although the price would be largely inflated.
I guess it all depends on whether Spam go down.
If they do we can take NRC off their hands. But if they don't, like Parker, his price will be largely inflated.
-
You miss my point, I aimed it at Richard because he seems so confident of signing NRC.
I cannot see anyone else who would fit the bill and be available.
By fit the bill I mean be capable in that position, be able to improve (so have potential), be the right age bracket, be playing at the level, be ambitious, and who would not go to or aim for a top 3 or 4 side at this stage
Does Scott Parker not fit that mould? Lassana Diara or Mathieu Flammini?
I'm not disagreeing BTW, I just want to know how you can be so sure
NRC would be a fantastic signing.

Of course we will need a replacement, but why not Sidwell or Barton for example?
-
I firmly believe that Nigel Reo Cocker will be a Villa player before the new season
Any reason why?
Aside from his current ability and overall potential ability of course.
