Roberto Di Matteo heads the shortlist for Aston Villa job but is not the only candidate

Roberto Di Matteo is one of the favourites for the Aston Villa manager's job but it is not a one-horse race, according to Sky sources.

It was revealed that Randy Lerner sold the club to the Recon Group, owned by Chinese businessman Dr Tony Jiantong Xia, on Wednesday with the deal awaiting ratification from the Premier League and Football League.

It is understood Di Matteo, who stepped down at Schalke a year ago after a seven-month spell at the German club, will hold talks with the new Villa owner, but not until next week.

Di Matteo led Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League in 2012, stepping up from his role as assistant manager to replace Andre Villas-Boas, only to leave six months later following a 3-0 Champions League defeat by Juventus.

Representatives of Xia held discussions in New York following the conclusion of takeover negotiations and are known to be interested in a number of candidates led by Burnley boss Sean Dyche and ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

David Moyes is also a candidate, although it is believed that the former Manchester United and Everton manager will not fancy working in the Championship.

Ex-Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson is also in the frame, although many of his supporters at Aston Villa - including David Bernstein and Adrian Bevington - have now left the club.

SSNHQ also understands that Damien Comolli was initially touted as a possible technical director but the former director of football at Liverpool is not aware of interest and has had no contact with the Chinese consortium.

It is estimated that Dr Xia will pay between £60m and £70m for the club which New York-based investor Lerner bought 10 years ago and has been trying to sell since 2014.

In a "farewell statement" on the Villa website, Lerner said: "Tony's excitement to develop Villa Park shone through. I remain convinced that this is a crucial part of the club's future as it provides a critical, long-term second source of revenue and therefore sustainability for the club."

Villa were relegated to the Championship after finishing bottom of the Premier League this season.

Interesting bit about Comoli in this piece by SSN...

  2. Should we redevelop VP and the North Stand in particular could we not look at having the corners of the ground filled in to raise the capacity a little too?

I'm sure something like this was mooted at one point under Lerner but never came to fruition. Having said that, I do agree with others in this thread that have said that we should focus on the team first and get ourselves back in to the Prem before we start expanding the stadium. I can't remember the last time we filled VP for two games on the trot so there's little point in doing it right now.

Just been browsing for more information and the small Heath alliance forum keeps coming up towards the top of the search.

It appears they found that website earlier than it was on here. Can't fault their dedication for all things Villa

I can't believe they actually have a busy Villa thread on their forum! I've just had to go and have a look because I didn't think that that level obsession even existed, but I was very, very wrong. They've even said that they think we'll come out of this smelling roses so they need to rip the piss out of us as much as possible now because they likely won't be in a position to do it again anytime soon.

    You couldn't make it up.

    :crylaugh:

Not really. Garde had no experience in the league. Sherwood was a decent appointment. I had no issue with us hiring him when we did. He saved us from relegation last season, but got exposed this season. We needed an Allardyce type after Sherwood. Di Matteo has managed clubs in england, and has years of experience in the championship and premier league. Seems like the perfect appointment if you ask me.

My main issue is that he's never rebuilt a squad. I think we need someone tried and tested at steadying the ship and while I think Pearson is a bit of a rocket polisher I think he could fix Villa.

RDM on the other hand... Do you think he could handle the big time charlies in the squad? How would he cope with Gabby, Lescott et al? I think he'd drown.

  5. I like RDM as a bloke but I think he'd be completely wrong for AVFC in it's current state. As someone intimated earlier, he's another Garde or Sherwood type appointment. A big no from me sadly.

  6. Agree with the above. Ship him out and start with Clarke and Baker at the back.

At least going down gives us a chance to finally use the likes of Baker, Gardner and all the other youngsters which have been deemed exciting at one point or another.

  7. Thats not fair on Beye though BOF. He was brilliant for Newcastle and whenever ive seen him in a Villa shirt hes been decent. Hes just not had a fair crack at it here. Like a few players to be fair. Its not his fault MoN signed him then froze him out. wtf was he thinking there?! Eejit.

But regardless, he should be sold now

Have to disagree with the comments on Beye. I don't think he was "brilliant" at Newcastle and whenever he's played for Villa he's been nothing but a liability.

He almost single handedly got us knocked out of the Europa League last year.

  8. Freidel is what 40 yrs old?

So we kinda knew we were gonna need a keeper at some point. So where is this talented Keeper we have been spying/scouting on for the last couple of years?

Or is it a case of searching for a replacement last minute?

Well I doubt McLeish was really thinking who Villa were goin to replace Friedel with when he was at Blues. Dont forget that any plans Houllier had would have been with his scout and doesn't apply to AM now.

  9. That's a real shame. It seems like he has so much natural ability. :(

There was a lad in the 80's called Lee Jenkinbs who had more ability than Gary Shaw but didn't have the desire . Shaw did and made it I hope Delfounso does but the signs aint good .

Albrighton has the desire in abundance and has over took him big time Gary Gardner when he recovers will be next major breakthrough

I find it disgusting that some people can't motivate themselves enough to play for a Premier League football team.

How's Weimann by the way MM?

4 months unfortunately but another who they rate very highly and had taken over in the pecking order . I don't know for a fact but I think somethink happened during the summer for them to have a downer on Delfounso .

That's disappointing, about Weimann. I think I remember you saying about him looking good and I wanted more than anything to see him prove it in the first time.

Such a shame about him and the Rapid game. Cheers for the info mate.
