  1. Are you actually flippin serious?!! :x Engage your brain there for a minute and you will realise that we are in the top 30 biggest clubs in world football both by revenue and wages. In England we have the 2 Manchester Clubs, 3 London Clubs and Liverpool who are ahead of us. Outside of England the top 4 in Spain, the top 3 in Germany the top 4-5 in Italy and the top 2-3 in France. The Villa job is a massive job in club football. We just need our board to sell it right. But what players have we got Given, Hutton, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Ireland, Nzogbia, Makoun, Gabby & Bent. The majority of people on here want the back 4 gone so that leaves us with Given, Ireland, Nzogbia, Makoun, Gabby & Bent and a few kids. Ive no doubting that the villa job is a huge job but we are in right trouble of going down at the minute without an overhaul of the squad, we simply have not got the quality we used to have. Its not so long ago we had a back line with Mellberg Laursen Bouma. A midfield with Young Barry Petrov Milner. What have we got at the moment? Given, Hutton, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Ireland, Nzogbia, Makoun, Gabby & Bent…….All of these players are internationals and would all pick up contracts at Premiership clubs. Any decent manager should relish the chance to work with our squad of players. Get the best out of the ones he thinks he can work with best and move the rest of them on. That is ten players the rest are a bunch of kids. Some admittedly I rate but the majority arent Premiership Players.

Chnage your question then - you asked about why the Villa job would be attractive and got the answer, also add in one of the top training facilities in the league. So your question is what will any potential manager think of our squad? Going back to your initial post. Top 30 in wages not anymore my friend. We have about 10 established premiership players on our books at the moment, plus that model was unsustainable. With regard revenue the latest revenues are taken from a season where we had announced the most lucrative sponsorship deal in the clubs history with FX Pro, season ticket sales were inline with other years O'Neill was manager. However I would expect a sharp fall in revenue this season. In terms of tv revenue this season the only teams to get LESS than us were Blackburn, Bolton & Wolves, those are the 3 teams who also got relegated. The villa job was attractive when O'Neill left but it is no where near as attractive now.

  4. - Great stadium. - Good owner willing to back financially, after the wage bill is lowered slightly. (After the likes of Dunne/ Warnock/ Collins/ Petrov end their ridiculous contracts, we'll have more money to spend on reasonable wages/ transfer funds). - Some decent Prem players in Bent, Given, N'Zogbia, Dunne, Gabby (sometimes) - Young players that have proved they can perform in the Premier League, just not consistantly yet (as is expected of youngsters): Clark, Wiemann, Herd, Lichaj, Bannan, Albrighton - More promising youngsters coming through: Gardner, Carruthers, Delfouneso.. - The fact that, even in our 'cost cutting year', the owner still backed the manager with £20m to spend - Any manager will get a fairly free ride for the first few years, if they simply avoid a relegation battle and pass the ball along the floor every now and then. 1. No arguments with the stadium but its been half full far too long and with the wrong appointment a new manager will be seeing empty seats. 2. Id agree we have a good owner who doesnt interfer for the most part and lets a manager conduct his business. However, we will struggle to sell those players you mentioned above, not only because of their poor form but also ludicrous wages. 3. You've already mentioned selling Dunne & Gabby was woeful for 99% of last season. Bent, Given & N'Zogbia on their day are good players but that is only 3 players you have to pick 11 for your first team. 4. These young players need to be coming off the bench or playing in cups but at the moment are starting more than their fair share of games. 5. Gardner & Carruthers are in the same bracket as above allbeit probably have a higher ceeling however Delfouneso has been in the since 2008, time to cut our losses here I think. 6. £20million, but we sold Young & Downing for larger sums, so our net spend was negative. 7. Lastly, few years is an exageration as if results arent satisfactory by late September people will get on the mans back unless it is a very excitable appointment.
  5. Can I ask an honest question in the hope of getting an honest answer? What is exactly attractive about the Villa job at this moment in time?
  6. It depends why he has pulled out. He may not have recieved certain assurances that he would get with us. Who's to say he's pulled out, perhaps Liverpool saw the fact that Rodgers has out performed him last year and therefore seems the better candidate.
  7. Think he was on SSN last week saying he hadnt heard anything and he was off on hols last Friday with his contract up at the end of May.
  8. It took 16 days to appoint McLeish & 31 to appoint Houiller, I suggest the board are more experienced at this process now so surely next week at the latest.
  9. August 4th 2006 was O'Neills appointment date. He left the 9th of August 2010.
  10. Maybe I should have said "the renewal date" instead of expiry date. Apologies for confusion. IIRC didn't MON join us just before the season started 5 years before he walked out? I can't remember the exact dates but I think it must have been close. No he was there a lot more than 5 days as we had some preseason friendly in Germany he attended.
  11. Kind of cements his status and prevents him from becoming Owen Coyle II. In fairness theyre last two managers have gone on to Inter Milan & England (allbeit via WBA).
  12. Strange that, they just bought Sigurdsson yesterday for a club record fee :?
  13. In my opinion the only way we can be competitive is to increase revenue but of course increases in revenue are direct proportional to becoming more competitive. So we have to spend money to make money it would seem. Arsenals wages to turnover ratio was only 29%, Uniteds 45%, Wolves 49% while the average in the premiership was 75% we were 88% on the last accounts, I suspect that percentage might not fall as much as people would think due to match revenue falling supstantially last season. However with a good appointment and a few value for money signings we could lower it substantially. **Ender 4 you forgot Petrov as well.
  14. In view of the latest rash of hand wringing and wailings of "boo hoo, it's all MON's fault, he made Randy spend all his money", it's worth noting that 5 out of the top 6 top earners weren't signed by MON so problems with our wage bill now - if they are continuing - are starting to be down to Foolier and Mcdraw. Did we REALLY sign up Zog for £55k and Makoun for £50k a week? Two biggest wastes of money ever! Of the above Im sure NZogbia is on 60k a week while Makoun is closer to 35k. Dunne earns a reported 2.5 mil a year as well so should be closer to 50k, but these are negligble really from your calculation.
  15. Whelans a prized parrott. Would anyone agree or argue that Lerners been made look silly by two men who started with nothing and built their own fortunes, in Dave Whelan & Rokke. While Randy has just inherited his wealth was born into it and therefore doesnt know who to fight tooth and nail for something?
  16. No offence to you SIT but what exactly happens if Thursday comes and goes & RM hasnt deicded. Whelan will hardly sack him, tell him he cant take the Liverpool job.
  17. More than likely but VTers are notorious for reading through the lines dont you know
  18. Gus Poyet is backing RDM for the Chelsea job. A bit of creative thinking could tell you he doesnt want him to not be appointed and become a potential rival for the villa job.
  19. Raineri since he left Chelsea Valencia - didnt last a season Parma - Feb to May Juventus - just under 2 seasons Roma - 17 monts Inter - 6 months
  20. How so? We let a tiny club in Norway make a fool out of us, a tiny club in England make a fool out of us this time last year, then we stooped to Birminghams level in appointing McLeish, defending his decision to leave them on grounds that the job was untenable and going to a trial to sort out comp for him. Not including the empty seats, protest etc. We have no squad bar 8 players and a few kids, no manager, no contact with the fans. Some one said it a few days ago and it didnt get half as much attention as it should what we need is a Peter Kenyon type because at the end of the day that man is always going to earn his wages no matter who he crosses or how much he is hated. Randy & PF are worried about stepping on people's toes. Don't you think we should wait and see who we appoint first? I probably should, but how can I have faith in a board that appointed Houiller, who was clearly passed his sell by date, then factor in that he wouldnt be taking over till November, had a bad ticker & how do they follow up that? Alex McLeish. At the end of the day when you appoint a manager you either up grade like Chelsea did when they sacked 2nd place Claudio Ranieri for Jose Mourinho or you bottle it and appoint the cheap option like so many clubs have, eg Terry Connors. When O'Neill left we downgraded and downgraded even further with McLeish but at this moment in time I can not see this board appointing someone better or even close to O'Neill in terms of managerial ability, and lets face it he had a lot of flaws. I don't think Houllier was necessarily a bad appointment given the circumstances at the time. He actually took over in late September, not November. Alas, it was his health that was his downfall, which I guess was kind of predictable (although he was passed fit before he took up the job). McLeish was an incredibly bad appointment and I still can't understand why they did it. However, I think we should wait until the new manager is in before saying things like "we're a joke". Was it September, dont know where I got November from. He was hardly setting the world alight though and a 9th place finish very much flattered us that year as we did flirt with relegation. From the generals comments I see it as they thought McLeish had done a good job at Birmingham, 9th, then a league cup. He clearly stated that he was no longer allowed to do his job and in some sense conned his way into the job, the board applied McLeish to the squad we had and thought with backing that he couldnt do too bad and might sneak a trophy. However they seem to be learning from their mistakes, in appointing Houiller they realized they needed a younger man so approached Martinez & eventually McLeish. I just hope they now know they need a really great manager or we will go down and they have to back him.
  21. This. We need someone who will start work immediately, weigh up the back room team, sort out the scouts all before a ball is kicked at the euros. I know for a fact that the chairman of one of my local clubs is a scout for Leeds and the only fee he gets is he goes over to 2 or 3 games a season and gets treated like royalty. Who hard can that be to get in place. We obvioulsy have someone in place somewhere with the like of Steiber, Weimann, Siergiest being approached at a young age but we need a complete revamp of the scouting network.

  23. Thats how good it felt when he left. My point is the cost cutting must end. That is quiet a lot of player turnover with the only ones coming in Makoun (since gone on loan), Ireland, Nzogbia, Given, Bent & Hutton. We need about 8 players in this summer. Thats about £40mil minimum and thats before we sell anyone. I know some of them were short deals but the fact of the matter is that these short term players were supposed to be seen as short term fixes until we had someone better lined up to fill the gap. Robbie Keane pretty much single handidly kept us up last year & he was only here for a couple of weeks. Does anyone know roughly with our attendance and ticket prices and acceptable wage budget for the year would be coupled with what we are currently paying out on a weekly basis?
