Bert is trying to do too much too often. A couple of times he's played some nice little passes to Buendia but then goes for the hail Mary straight into row Z

Felt his high line was ultimately what outdid us - particularly in the first half.
Reminded me a bit of the Liverpool game where we played high-line chicken with them and lost.
They had fast frontline players and the ability to hit them from deep and, but for that fleeting moment of everything going just marginally wrong, we dealt with it pretty well.

You could tell it wasn't to be when not even Maguire could get it in the net for us

Kept giving the ball away at key moments.
If only Watkins got the same fouls that Konsa gets.
Absolutely ridiculous that it wasn't a penalty on Watkins. Would have had a clean header if not shoulder barged by Dalot
Says a great deal about where we're at though that United were hanging on in the last 20 rather than looking for the killer 2nf.

Got up at 4am to watch the 2nd half. In the past I would have gone back to bed raging due to conceding a late goal, but felt very comfortable that would not be the case today.

Look at the improvement in Watkins working for half a season under Emery and imagine Archer having the same improvement next season. That's some player he could be.

This match highlights the need for another option in wide midfield and at 10 of high quality.
We desperately need a bit of genuine pace out wide

So does Martinez get at least half a clean sheet on his record here?

Oh dear. That changes things...

In a recent article he spoke about Emery telling him to hang on to the ball a bit longer than he had been doing

Brentford are doing a great job of closing us down and giving us no space. We need to be patient and grind this one out.

Watkins did to the Newcastle defence what he did to VVD in the 7-2.

Not sure I like this talk.
Feels like the equivalent of standing in front of a mirror and saying Candyman three times.

This bloke saves so well with his feet he could lose both arms in a chainsaw accident and still be best keeper in the world

Barnes took his goal very, very well but did Emi have another save to make?
His save with his foot when that Barnes shot deflected off Mings was absolutely incredible

Defensively the best effort I've seen for quite a while. They concentrated for a full 100 minutes which is crucial. The players have completely bought in with Emery now and understand that it's not a rigid system but one that allows them to play exciting football if they're focused and patient.
I thought Martinez really showed himself as a supreme shot stopper today and Mings, Konsa and Moreno were completely on their game. Young struggled a bit on Chillwell but got in his head and turned the tides well.
McGinn was superb today and what a goal, and Ramsey looked like a mini McGinn the way he was turning out of traffic.
Absolutely beautiful outcome and finally we see Villa grasping an opportunity to take what's in front of them rather than choke. Onwards and upwards I hope!

can I just say Chilwell is a massive word removed.
Yes. Yes you can.

How has Cucurella not been mentioned? Chronic diver and a nasty piece of work to boot. The fact that he's turned to utter excrement at Chelsea doesn't recuse him from this list.

Just seen the Southampton peno against Spurs. There's some real VAR shenanigans going on today.

Really want to see Archer in this team next season.

Can you imagine if Bournemouth had managed to get some sort of result out of that? Imagine the ramifications for the relegation race based on that absolutely atrocious VAR non decision?
Still there wouldn't be a fraction of the hand wringing there was over Nyland's incredible save against Sheffield United
