He is not Alan though, and he will never be Alan.

Sure we can pretend, we can try to kid ourselves that we have moved on, but for how long can we keep that up, living a lie, hiding behind a fake smile. It is not fair. It is not fair on us and it's not fair on Guilbert.
You can't build a relationship on a lie.

I will never get over Alan. Never.

    "...go on Alan!!!.....unlucky Alan."

    I’m over Alan.

  2. People should also remember that we are amongst the few who have actually done business so far. Wait til the big boys get started. I doubt Mings transfer will be within the top 5 even for defenders this year. Maguire for £85 Million.

    Maguire. Eighty. Five. Freaking. Million.

Just no need to make this change. It’s like Gerrard and Carragher - Jack leading by example in midfield, Mings with the passion and organisation at the back. Don’t need to strip one of the armband and hand it to the other.

Fair. I’d prefer this discussion over self flagellation about money though. I’m just glad he’s here.

You would drop a Captain who has never lost a match and whose appointment coincided precisely to us getting promotion ? Brave man !

    Different circumstances, different test.

It was as much Jack’s return to the side which sparked the crazy winning spree as his captainship, and you’d best believe Jack doesn’t need motivation to play for the Villa.

He can and will do that without an armband though.

Fair point. We need leaders throughout obviously. Think we’re short in this regard atm. Need a ball winning midfielder.

Not for me.., Jack leads the team out and calls heads/tails...T hen Mighty Mings roars from the back whenthe game gets underway

Get what you’re saying but my reasoning is this- we’ve come from the championship where we were winning 3-4 games out of 5. Jack was one of the best technically in the league. We could have the luxury of a ‘lead-by-example’ captain.

Now I reckon for the first season in the Prem we’re gonna get battered by 3 out of 5. We need someone as captain who is gonna be able to marshall a team with low morale, and dish out a verbal kicking or two when the time requires.

As much as I love Jack, of course.

  7. Get in! Great news. He’s gotta be captain for me.

Plus we can actually field a defence now, which is awesome.

Don’t get the negativity with the fee. Crazy or not, that’s what players cost now. We don’t wanna sell the family jewels, but equally we shouldn’t tight-arse our way straight back into the p**sing championship again.

This is the most "speculation" I've ever seen him put on twitter. He usually only puts things up when they're on and about to happen.

8 or 9 is the amount of players we need so I'm glad he wrote about that.

Yeah that was the only solace in a fairly depressing update.

I get that some of us are starting to stress that we need another half a dozen players and that they'd like them all signed so they can bed in before the start of the season. I'd imagine in an ideal world no one would argue the earlier you can bring in players the better in terms of getting the team to gel over pre season.

It isn't the end of the world though if that isn't the case. Three of our big players last season in McGinn, El Ghazi and Tammy all signed after the season had started, Tammy on the last day of August. In the January window Mings came in on the last day of it and hit the ground running.

I am sure we will see one or two signings over the next couple of weeks, hopefully more. The main thing though is that we get the right players in and if that means it going right up until the last day of the window so be it

I think we get that, but the stress is coming from the fact that we’re not just tweaking or adding strength to an established team, we still have to build the spine of the team virtually from scratch. We have hardly any defenders, and no defensive minded midfielders who are gonna be able to cut it in the prem.

You mention three players in your post. We still need around SIX first teamers or we’re gonna set all time goals conceded records next year.

So if the recent photos are correct, this mockup looks almost exactly like the actual kit? Aside from the sponsor colour. Not sure I liked it from the low res image, but when the diagonal stripes are factored in, very nice.

That third kit is wicked too. I had the old Muller away kit, and I think I might have to shake the piggy bank for that one. Awesome.

Funny how different opinions can be isn't it, I think the current home shirt is dreadful. Love the training gear and away kit, but the stripes and claret sleeves? Nah. That's not a Villa home shirt, for me.

This is the shirt I think I'll always be going back to. Classic design, no fancy bullshit, no gimmicks, just a brilliant Villa home top. I'd take this every single season.

I do like this kit and wore it loads back in the day. Thought the quality of the nike stuff was decent.

Think the shade of claret was wrong though. Too red, too bright. If it was the kit above with last years colour, I would love it.

he speaks in third person and says there are other 'more outstanding clubs' than Aston Villa. it's a no from me.

I took that to mean that he thought that we were one of the 'more outstanding clubs' tbh.

HKP90 likes a bit of third person.

Love this site as it really brings up different opinions.  I never thought Delfouneso was ever going to make it and I watched him a lot in the non-first team games.

Bannon was another I had no time for either and if I’m correct you were a big fan of his.  It’s all about opinions but really is interesting to try and see what others see in players.

I used to love Savo but I knew how split the Villa base were on him but one of my fondest memories supporting the Villa was his goal at Wembley.

I quite liked Bannon. I thought he was a little one-dimensional, but thought he could do a job as part of a system.

I grew up with Savo, and even though looking back he was a bit pants, I loved him to bits. Talking with my Dad before each game we’d always say ‘today’s the day’ ‘he’s gonna get a hatful today’ and ‘he’ll kick on now he’s scored a lucky shinner from 3 yards’. We were always wrong. Except twice (you’ll remember when). In fairness, I reckon his hold up play was pretty decent, and Yorke was a great foil.

Delfouneso, i’m afraid I never had much time for. Never really seemed to excel in any area when I saw him. Wasn’t rubbish, just a bit meh really. Although I never saw him all that much in real life, cos I couldn’t get to games much during his time.

A lot of people are talking about suggested spending limits for this transfer window (£100m or £150m or whatever).

I think that's too simplistic. Spending £100m on 23-year-olds with lots of potential to improve is different from throwing cash at established talent. It's an investment.

We only need one or two of those players to become targets for Champions League clubs, and we've more than justified the original spend.

What we were doing before was signing older players on the cheap and young players on loans. It makes your overall transfer spend look much lower, but that's money you'll never see again - the older players can't be sold on, and any improvement in the young players is a gift to the parent club.

So once you take age into account, I think most of our transfer fees sound very sensible.

Agreed. I couldn’t be happier with the business we’ve done so far, it’s just that I’m impatient, and wish we’d done more. To be fair, that’s probably why we’ve done good business. If I was in charge we’d have probably bought the Brentford and Bristol City squads for half a billion.

I’m an idiot, but DS/the board are clearly not. Bring on the next few weeks!

With his signing we (briefly) jump into the top 10 list of highest spenders in this transfer window among European clubs.

Will be passed by a fair few clubs pretty soon no doubt.

Still some way to catch Real Madrid thou...

To be fair most other teams actually already have a defence of some kind.
