Chris Hughton is concerned that his predecessor as Norwich boss, Paul Lambert, will win the race to sign Kyle Naughton.

Norwich have contacted Tottenham about a £4m deal for Naughton after he spent last season on loan at Carrow Road but Lambert wants to make the 23-year old his first signing for Aston Villa.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is set to make a double raid on Norwich.

Lambert wants central defender Daniel Ayala as well as striker Grant Holt from his former club.

He is also keen to snap up Leeds ace Robert Snodgrass and Blackpool forward Matt Phillips as part of his Villa Park revolution.

Lambert has given Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner a list of targets to steer the club away from another relegation battle.

With a transfer fund of around £20million, he knows he must find value for money

Aston Villa and Sunderland are showing late interest in Burnley’s Jay Rodriguez as his move to Southampton is yet to be finalised.

The Saints are trying to convince him to move to St Mary's after agreeing to smash their transfer record for the Burnley youngster.

Saints have had a £7million bid accepted for Rodriguez and chairman Nicola Cortese has been attempting to thrash out personal terms with the 22-year-old striker's representatives.

  4. who did the front flip thrown in??

Only player i recall doing this in England was Mark Stimson (Left back for Pompey, Newcastle and Small Heath)

CobyJones? American international that use to play for Coventry.

You probably right, i don't recall myself that Coby Jones did it?? But then again it seems to be an american thing with these throw ins!! i have seen them in some of the movies such as "Shes The Man" (Vinny Jones movie)

  5. I would like see Andre Villas-Boas myself, rumours in metro we are after him:-

    metro

American billionaire Lerner touched down in the Midlands on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after he had sanctioned the dismissal of McLeish, after a season which saw the club flirt with relegation, finishing just two points above the drop zone.

Lerner was eventually persuaded to cancel the Scot's £2 million-a-year deal, that has two terms left to run, by club officials last week, who have been increasingly concerned by an ongoing fan revolt, that began with his appointment at the start of the season, having previously been relegated with city rivals Birmingham.

McLeish's failure to adequately replace the likes of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, plus his reputation for what fans have dubbed 'boring football', have led Villa to look for a vibrant young manager as a replacement, with a four-man short list agreed just before Lerner's arrival in the country.

Metro understands that the list includes two current Premier League managers, thought to be Wigan's Roberto Martinez and Norwich's Paul Lambert, and two currently out of work bosses - one of which is believed to be former Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas.

The other is, as yet, unknown, but contrary to speculation, he is not Mick McCarthy, or ex Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, although the latter is a board favourite, but has told the club he has too many reservations over taking the position.

ASTON Villa manager Alex McLeish has been sacked, according to BBC Sport.

Goal.com exclusively revealed in April that senior officials were dissatisfied with the Scot’s stewardship of the club, with attendance dwindling and notable unrest among supporters at his previous association with local rivals Birmingham and a perceived negative style of football.

It is understood that club owner Randy Lerner flew in from the United States to speak with the Scot and chief executive Paul Faulkner to finalise the termination after discussions over whether the manager should take responsibility for the season’s failures or whether the difficult circumstances he faced over the course of the campaign should be taken into account.

The Midlands club finished in 16th place and had to wait until the penultimate fixture to secure their survival, registering the club’s worst home record in their history with just four wins at Villa Park along the way.

Meanwhile former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas could be back to haunt his old club next season.

Record says AVB's representatives have fielded interest from Aston Villa with the axe hanging over manager Alex McLeish

  6. My point was lads, is if he come to Villa would he go for foreign talent (see Cisse, Ba, Dempsey etc etc etc)

Would Lambert buy anyone abroad though judging by who he has brought at Wycombe, Colchester or Norwich?? which all seem british based players?

My example was like ok why has he not picked/plucked a gem abroad for 500k/1mil etc.. that was all..

I am not knocking him as a manager so far, just seems very much like MON way he only seems buy british players.

There is rumours he wanted Mohammed Abdellaoue of Hannover for Norwich, don't know how true that was? But players like this i would love see at Villa

    Thats all

    8) :D

  7. The reason is he does that is ££££££, he buys what he knows, look the man is not like MON, honestly believe PL would adapt and change like Moyes.

so why has he say never splashed 500k, or 1mil on a european based player??? there are plenty gems to be had, fair enough some of that list are good up and coming youngsters from Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs on loan

But need look lot further afield for players rather than UK based ones

  8. Here are Lamberts Norwich signings, hardly inspiring ones, a few gems like Pilkington, Ryan and Elliott Bennett!! Problem have is he doesn't shop outside UK (Similar to Martin O'Neill, if he did then he would be ideal candidate... just think he will buy british only)

    Daniel Ayala

Leon Barnett (loan to permanent) Elliott Bennett Ryan Bennett

    Andrew Crofts

    Ritchie De Laet (loan)

Rob Edwards (loan) Stephen Elliott (loan)

    Fraser Forster (loan) David Fox

    Jonny Howson

Simeon Jackson Bradley Johnson Oli Johnson

    Henri Lansbury (loan)

Russell Martin (loan to permanent) Anthony McNamee (loan to permanent) Steve Morison

    Kyle Naughton (loan)

    Dani Pacheco (loan) Anthony Pilkington

    Michael Rose (loan) John Ruddy

    Steven Smith Andrew Surman

    Marc Tierney

    James Vaughan Sam Vokes (loan)

Elliott Ward Zak Whitbread Aaron Wilbraham

    Total Players : 31

Paul Lambert has been in charge at Norwich City since 18th August 2009

  9. my former Park Hall School (Castle Brom) colleague's Suicide bid article:-

    Daily Mail

Lee Hendrie has revealed he twice tried to commit suicide after losing £10 million in failed property deals.

The former Aston Villa and England midfielder, who earned £24,000-a-week in his heyday, lost a potential £10million in property deals and ended up with debts of over £1million.

And Hendrie has now admitted it all became too much for him.

I seriously wanted to end it all,' the 34-year-old told the Sunday Mirror.

At the peak of his career Hendrie says he had it all. He was playing for Villa every week in front of 40,000 fans, had 12 caps for England Under-21s and had been selected to play for the first team under Glenn Hoddle.

He had spent £1.2million on 20 luxury cars, including a Ferrari 360 Spider, had a £1.7million mansion and partied in the nation's most exclusive clubs.

    International star: Hendrie for England

His marriage to his childhood sweetheart fell apart within HOURS after she found him texting another woman - one who would later save his life.

But his life began to unravel in 2010 when his career appeared to fade.

He had left Aston Villa after 251 appearances to join Sheffield United then to Derby County.

But he was making the first team less and less and soon realised his career was in its twilight. Then depression started to take hold.

'I couldn’t get a contract with a club. I had no money left, all the houses were going and everything just came tumbling down,' he said. 'I felt I had failed my family and I wanted out... to end it all.'

Hendrie will marry his fiance Emma Cheal, 27, this week. He credits her with saving his life after he took an overdose of tablets, washed down with wine.

He says she called police who managed to trace his car after a conversation on the phone left her fearing the worst.

'I was all over the place,' he said. 'She said "where are you?" I said "don’t worry" and put the phone down. Next thing I knew I was waking up in hospital on a drip.'

But that wasn't the end of his troubles. He tried to do the same thing again last July.

After his second attempt Hendrie began to face up to his problems and has attended regular counseling sessions.

Now playing non-league football and scraping a living wherever he can, Lee admitted, he described it as his 'wake-up call'.

The death of his former Sheffield United team-mate Gary Speed, found hanged at his home, was a shocking reminder of the devastation his actions could have caused to his whole family.

He said he felt 'sick' the day he heard the news and imagined what Speed's suicide had done to his wife and children.

He says he is determined to get his life back on track and wants others to learn from his experiences.

  10. Ronald Hoop!

Haha i remember him, he played one trial game against Birmingham City (John Frain testimonial we beat them 9-0 at the Sty, think he got 2, Draper got 2 and Lee Hendrie got 2, can't remember the other scorers)

he had a lot of clubs, we had him on trial from Telstar, which was his best scoring record:-

Pretty sure this wasn't the game. I'm sure it was the day after Big Ron had been sacked, we played them in a friendly for the grand opening of their fantastic new half a stadium, and it ended in a 1-1 draw.

I might have got mixed up mate, did go to see us twice at the sty in mid 90's, 1 was a 1-1 and other we beat them 9-0 with Allan Evans and Brian Little playing first half!!! Hoop probably played in the 1-1 like you said

  11. I thought that Paul Mortimer was going to be ace. Ended for him after he gave the Holte End 2 fingers. Sad.

i was 8 when this happened but still don't get it?? He scored i think the 4th against Luton after a really good run, was giving it the old "look at that for a goal" but stuck 2 fingers up at Holte.

Can anyone tell me what his problem was and why he did what he did?? he was new to the team, and scored a goal like that, but then sticks two fingers up at the Holte??

VILLA star Barry Bannan was involved in a Twitter bust-up with Blues fans after their promotion dream died.

It started when the Scot, who was on loan at Blackpool earlier in his career, tweeted: “Buzzing for the Blackpool boys another trip to Wembley”.

Blues fans responded by taking the mickey out of the 5ft 7ins tall midfielder’s height and bringing up his 18-month driving ban, imposed last November after he admitted drinking and driving.

In a series of late-night exchanges, Bannan told one Birmingham City supporter: “Can’t wait to watch you on Match of the Day next season, oh wait Football League hahahaha.”

And in another message, he tweeted: “Pipe down enjoy your trips to Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday and places like that next year.”

Asked if he been drinking, Bannan replied: “Just had the one as a toast to Blues staying in the Championship is that bad?”

The star later told his Twitter followers not to take the exchanges to heart, insisting: “What a funny night, some great banter on here.”

Gus Poyet is on the verge of quitting Brighton after it emerged he is on the wanted list of three top West Midlands clubs

West Bromwich and relegated Wolves are on the lookout for new managers and Aston Villa are also considering Alex McLeish’s future after a disastrous first season in charge.

Poyet has established a reputation for combining attractive football with success after transforming Brighton’s fortunes.

And West Bromwich chairman Jeremy Peace is considering an official approach to Brighton owner Tony Bloom after Sunday’s final round of Premier League matches.

But Wolves have emerged as serious rivals, with owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey under huge financial pressure to get their relegated club back up at the first attempt.

Poyet turned down Swansea in 2010 to stick with Brighton and save them from relegation in his first season.

Albion went on to win the League One title in 2011 before flirting with the play-offs in their first season back in the Championship. They eventually finished 10th.

Joining him on the Newcastle departure list are striker Leon Best and midfielder Danny Guthrie who are both expected to sign to Aston Villa.

Villa owner Randy Lerner has stressed to Alex McLeish he must get value for money and Guthrie will be available on a Bosman free transfer, while Best will be allowed to leave for around £1.5m.

Guthrie, who was signed from Liverpool for £1m four years ago, has been a key player in Newcastle’s excellent season, but he is frustrated at only being considered back up to first choice centre-midfield pairing Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye.

Best has also done reasonably well on Tyneside, despite initially struggling for goals and form when he moved from Coventry City to join the Magpies Championship promotion charge in January 2010.

The Republic of Ireland international scored six goals in 12 games following the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool last year, but has scored just once since September and has been replaced by £10m arrival Papiss Demba Cissé.

NEWCASTLE have told Leon Best and Danny Simpson they can leave — if the price is right Toon top brass have given up on trying to get full-back Simpson to sign a new deal after he rejected their last, improved offer of £25,000 a week.

Striker Best has fallen way down the pecking order following injuries and the arrival of Senegal star Papiss Cisse.

Aston Villa have shown an interest in both players in the past and are set to launch bids this summer as boss Alex McLeish tries to bolster his wafer-thin squad.

Simpson is out of Sunday’s final game at Everton with an ankle injury.

Aston Villa are setting up the £7million recruitment of giant Brazilian centre half Douglas from FC Twente.

Douglas plays for Steve McClaren’s Dutch club and, thanks to his marriage to a local Dutch girl, holds an EU passport.

He has just got Dutch citizenship and could play for Holland at the end of August.

Newcastle have had a £5m bid turned down.
