Imagine spending all that money to improve a squad that finished 4th, only to potentially slip back a place or 2 and be 35 points off the top spot and miles behind 2nd and 3rd. Bad season. Luckily the Champions league has been there to cover this up

Where's the fun in that? :winkold: Downing is still very young (20, 21?) and probably isn't ready for England yet, but would still be a better bet at LM than Barry, especially in the long run

Yes, but at the end of the day people will remember Shearer (for example) as a brilliant goalscorer. They wont say "yes, but he did score plenty of penalties and free kicks." The point is if he'd scored those 5 penalties this season he'd have 13? goals, and people wouldn't be quite as critical, because it's goals that matter

If you were interested in two strikers of similar quality at the same price, one with 10 goals and one with 20 including 10 pens, you'd take the one with 20 goals. It's another string to the players bow

Why shouldn't pens and free kicks count? If he'd scored the 2 at Fulham, the 2 at Newcastle and 1 at Spurs would you be saying the same?

He's clearly a good player when he has decent service. He also links the play up quite well. But when he has to work for goals himself, when they're not put on a plate (like most of them were last season) he's nowhere near as effective

Yes, change it to the circular one, a far more aesthetically pleasing one -
