Nobody is defending the financial doping.
In fact nobody is saying the money doesn't make an absolutely massive difference.
It does. Of course it does. It makes the job far far easier.
What it doesn't do is mean that any manager could do it, or any manager could have had the success Pep has had. They couldn't. Otherwise they'd sack Pep and get Chris Wilder in for 30k a week
I don't disagree with you. I think he's incredible at coaching elite athletes and that in itself is a unique talent.
I was just taking the opportunity to asterisk the "spending" part of the conversation.

Man Utd and Chelsea have spent as much money as Man City have.
At least until we learn a bit more about the 115 charges of financial impropriety.

From 13th April, we have a 4-match run of Brentford (h), Arsenal (a), Bournemouth (h), Chelsea (h).
In the same period, Spurs have Newcastle (a), Man City (h), Arsenal (h), Liverpool (a).
There is still a lot of ground to be covered in this race.

We did play better against Man Utd than Arsenal, but Arsenal are a much better side than Man Utd so I'm not sure it tells us too much. West Ham outplayed them too just last weekend at Old Trafford and shouldn't have lost.
So are we talking about performance or results here?
Objectively, we've played well in our last 2 league matches and could have had 8 goals. As it goes we've scored 6 and conceded 2.
From a performance perspective, you could say the Arsenal game (after the goal) was an indicator that the players were running out of steam and results might be about to change. We won a game that we probably deserved to lose.
By that measure, we're now in better "form" having played well in our last 2 league games.
If it's just results that determine form, we've lost 2 league games since 5th November. Both against relatively "in-form" teams.
This isn't a post I'd have written on Sunday night, but right now I'm feeling optimistic purely based on what I watched in our last 2 league games.

Equally, most fans would've been delighted with 2 points out of Man City and Arsenal, yet we got 6.
Football isn't binary - especially at such an elite level. The margins are tiny. If VAR doesn't disallow the opener against Sheff Utd at VP we likely win that. If Newcastle had played to their usual form we'd have got at least a point there.
I'd argue we played far better at home against Utd than we did against Arsenal. In fact, those two matches were almost a perfect reflection of each other. Arsenal missed a load of chances against us but we'd made a strong start, scored and held on.
What Villa have or haven't done from this position in the past is entirely irrelevant. The only people still involved on a matchday since then are us. So we're a big factor in making sure it doesn't happen again.

The F1 Drivers Championship, but Lewis Hamilton is the only one in a Formula One car whilst everyone else's vehicle is road legal.
Hamilton is still an amazing driver in an amazing machine. Incredible to watch. It's just no longer a race.

Redemption arc incoming?

I'd rather he was in there than the Belgian international Dendoncker, even though I've barely seen him play.

If that game ended up a draw yesterday we'd be saying we'd been robbed and had turned a corner.
One pinpoint cross against the run of play doesn't make us a shit team any more than winning 5-0 away makes us title contenders.
Don't believe the tripe about Utd being a club in crisis. That shit sells newspapers and Sky Sports subscriptions.
They've had rough patches of form by their standards but are still 6th. And despite having a £1bn squad are still 5 points behind us.
UTFV!

Genuine question from a conversation I had with my brother earlier.
Given the squad we have now and the limitations of FFP (or PS whatever), would we happily take Champions League qualification now if it meant a "Newcastle" season of two steps back?
They qualified but weren't ready, got dumped out of Europe completely and are fighting to catch the pack now.
I know it's not binary and there's no evidence that the same would happen to us, but if our squad is struggling to be strong enough to qualify, how would it compete?

Cash dives - Casemiro booking.
As usual, ref has been fine. VT blames ref for our inadequacies.
Edit: also obviously depends what players are actually saying to the ref r.e: Langlet and Fernandes.
So the Varane push in Ollie's back wasn't a booking either?
This ref is utter dogshit - always is.

This is why I hate watching us against these words removed. They just cheat and whine and the refs lap it up.

As soon as he can understand it this is what we'll be doing.
We're currently stuck between the tablet keeping him quiet for an hour when he's up at 5am and it acting as an incentive for him to get up at that time.
As soon as he has any concept of time I'll be doing what you did
