  1. FFS....drop Grealish now....thank God we have McGinn to come back.  I knew this wouldn't work as soon as I saw Whelan in the team....Bruce would have got slated for picking him.  Playing out from the back won't work with this lot neither!  I'm afraid Smith is Bruce MK2.

    You won't find many people under the age of 40, who up until fairly recently, disliked Ellis as much as me. I went on all the marches as a teenager, I rallied against his every move, against the revisionist history of his reign. I thought he was a penny pincher and a narcissist who put his own interests above those of the club, above those of it's fans. In my older age I have come to think he wasn't such a bad football club owner, certainly not as bad a human being as I once thought after all. Maybe it is whimsical notions like actually challenging for league titles, cup finals and putting trophies in the cabinet that have changed my mind. Or perhaps it was seeing his roller at away games in the depths of winter, knowing I could barely stand to watch the bilge on display in the driving snow never mind what a trudge it must be for a 90 year old man. Maybe I have become the revisionist.

    He wasn't necessarily a bad bloke, he was a bloke who made bad decisions at often the most inappropriate times and he outstayed his welcome by quite a few years all told, but in the end that isn't enough for me to sit here and disparage the man personally. A man who gave so much to charity, decades of his life to the club (good and bad) and as painfully misguided as he was at times genuinely thought he was doing what was required to make Aston Villa successful. Even if I have no doubt that personal success, financial or otherwise, was never too far from his mind.

    One thing he could do was spot a football manager. Ron Saunders, Ron Atkinson, Brian Little, John Gregory. Even Jozef Venglos can be looked on as an innovative move by a man determined to squeeze every ounce out of our resources. I would go as far as to say Dean Smith feels very much like an Ellis appointment.

    Ultimately he leaves behind a wife, a family, and my condolences go out to them. I hope they take solace from the fact he had a bloody good innings and more importantly he lived his dream, even if those dreams didn't always tally with my own.

    What a great post! That's exactly how I viewed Sir Doug. Definitely a 'marmite man' always kept us financially sound if nothing else! His worst decision was destroying the beautiful Trinity Road stand! RIP Sir Doug

    Ok, this might be a bit data heavy but let's look at some stats from whoscored.com for our three midfielders. And before some says stats only tell half the story, I've gone to all the home games and watched all the televised away ones so watching him fully has also cemented my belief he needs dropping based on his PERFORMANCES THIS SEASON. Obviously, that's just my opinion...

    Minutes - Grealish 1112, McGinn 1045, Hourihane 658

    Defensive;

    Tackling - McGinn 2.3, Hourihane 1, Grealish 0.9

    Clearances - Hourihane 1, McGinn 0.6, Grealish 0.4

    Blocks - McGinn 0.3, Hourihane 0.2, Grealish 0

    (McGinn 8pts, Hourihane 7pts, Grealish 3pts if points for positions, 3 for 1st to 1 for third!)

    Passing;

    Assists - Hourihane 4, McGinn 3, Grealish 1

    Key Passes - Grealish 2, McGinn 1.9, Hourihane 0.8

    Pass Success - Grealish 87%, Hourihane 86%, McGinn 81%

    (Grealish 7pts, Hourihane 6pts, McGinn 5pts)

    Attacking;

    Goals - McGinn/Hourihane 1, Grealish 0

    Shots - Hourihane/Grealish 2.2, McGinn 1.7

    Fouled - Grealish 4.7, McGinn 1.7, Hourihane 0.5

    (Grealish 6.5pts, Hourihane 6pts, McGinn 5.5pts)

    Negative aspects (now flips to worst first!);

    Dispossessed - Grealish 2.5, McGinn 1.6, Hourihane 0.4

    Bad Control - Grealish 1.7, McGinn 1.1, Hourihane 0.6

    Cards - McGinn 5, Grealish 4, Hourihane 0

    (Hourihane 9pts, McGinn 5pts, Grealish 4pts)

    (Totals - Hourihane 28pts, McGinn 23.5pts, Grealish 20.5pts - but recognise the dodgy science behind this!!)

    These paint a fairly clear picture to me. McGinn is head and shoulders above Grealish. Hourihane has played roughly half the time that Grealish has yet his impact on games has been far greater. Grealish's one strength is winning free kicks because he holds on to it for far too long but has good enough feet to win the foul!

    I'm really not impressed this season and people need to take off their rose tinted glasses and look at what he's really offering. I'm bored of hearing about his potential now - this is our third season in the Championship and he's still not shining.

    McGinn offers more going forward, Hourihane is more effective and probably balances the midfield better. Grealish needs dropping until he starts actually impacting on games.

    But this is just my opinion based on what I watch and what the stats seem to back up. Most around me today were very pleased he finally got substituted today.

    Great post and spot on!

    Forget all the talk of Premier League standards etc, he's simply not good enough for our starting XI at the moment. Comparing him to McGinn is embarrassing as it stands; where's the end product, where's the driving the team forward, where's the hassling and grafting, where's the worldy goals? All coming from McGinn. Hourihane offers more at the moment. We need a manager who has the balls to drop him.

    Today he was our weakest player. I don't care if it's a case of his ability/potential - this season he is barely a good Championship midfielder and we have better options. Maybe a rest would do him good.

    Spot on....woeful again today! DS was correct in hooking him...it was the right call at the right time.  People telling me the other day that 'he only falls over because he's played out of position!  Yes, somebody actually said that!

    I can see DS leaving him out he doesn't improve and become the very good player that we know he can be!

    Maybe, deep down, he actually wanted to move to Spurs. That may be effecting his performances this season... Or maybe he just isn't as good as some people (including myself) think he is. If Smith doesn't think he's up to it then he will drop him

    Agreed....he is a very good player 'on his day' and I'm hoping DS can get the best out of him! But, FFS Jack just stop throwing yourself to the floor it's embarrassing.

    Solid but unspectacular. After 7 days, I'll certainly take that! Swansea are going to be there (or thereabouts!) and we could have a few more today with some better decision making, clinical finishing and more favourable decisions from the ref.

    Positives; Nyland was outstanding today, shot stopping wise at least. There also seemed to be more of a plan on how to play. The back four adapted well to the unusual request of playing in their own positions too...

    Negatives; Sorry but Grealish is our weak link at the moment. He needs dropping. He's weak in midfield, his passing is poor, his shooting terrible and he slows play down in the hope of winning a freekick. Can you imagine some Spurs scouts were watching today's game; do you spend £40m on Grealish or McGinn?! He's offering nothing and I want a manager who has the balls to drop him. Bolasie's cameo was pretty horrendous too!

    Good start, keep it going...

    Good post and spot on about Grealish! Very poor again...still falling over for no apparent reason.  Very slow and woeful finishing!  Where are the 'he'll be better as a no10' supporters?  Some were even suggesting that he was only falling over because he,'s played out of position ....yes, somebody actually said that!

    When Grealish came back into the side last season - he seemed to play a lot more direct and was much better for it. This season he seems to have gone back to beating a man, stopping, beats the player again - then passes the ball back to where he was when he collected it. Needs to go back to direct play and inflicting damage on the opposition.

    I also think for a top notch playmaker he needs to drastically improve in front of goal

    Well summed up...completely agree.  People saying that he plays 'out of position'.  This has no relevance whatsoever! Playing out of position is NOT a reason for keep falling over, being slow and trying to beat the same player over and over again until you're either fouled or dispossessed!

    Jack as wonderful skills and needs to be coached in the correct way!  I really hope that Smith can be that coach!  If he can, then we will have a very special player at the club!

    This is frankly mostly bollocks. This 'good movement into dangerous areas' you speak of was virtually none existent. That was our entire problem, in a nutshell.

    Then he was farmed out on the wing and shock horror, he isn't a winger. It's almost like we have been there before and not learned our lesson.

    Absolutely no need for the abuse. I am simply stating my opinion.  Moreover, all those in close proximity to me in the Trinity Road stand share this opinion!

    I repeat, no need to be offensive with you're remarks!. I won't retaliate as you're also entitled to you're opinion!  I would also like to know how you feel being 'farmed out on the wing' has any relevance to my post?

    Well, I've not been banging on about it on here, but I've been singing Smith's praises for a while. I've said to friends and relatives for ages that a Premier League club should take a punt in Smith.

    I didn't think he would consider coming to be honest, he's built a good squad at Brentford, who are in good form, capable of promotion this season.

    He talks well, confident, he answers questions without having to resort to clichés.

    I think the thing that in my mind clsrifies how confident I am about Smith is that to me Bruce had a glass ceiling due to his style of play, that was top of the Championship, bottom of the Premier League. If we wanted to progress after promotion with Bruce, we would have had to sack him. I see Smith as a Premier League manager in the waiting, he can get us up, keep us up and improve us once we're up.

    Deaaaanooooo!

    Agree with this wholeheartedly
