  1. Just a handfull of decent managers currently out of work;

    Marco Van Basten

    Frank Rijkaard

    Bernd Schuster

    Louis Van Gaal

    Quique Sánchez Flores

Yep, thats the list I would have been woking through.

I dount any of them were even considered though

  2. Just can't get my ahead around it, yes he has lots of potential but he is still learning, would have thought if they were going for an up and coming manager they would look to Coyle. Lets face it, just after christmas a good portion of our own fanbase wanted Whelan to fire him, he only turned it around in the last 10 games or so. Admittedly I was never one of the Martinez out brigade but that was somewhat due to his connection to the club. Really hope he doesn't leave because we finally looked settled.

To be honest I think Martinez would be making a huge mistake going to Villa as he his still young and inexperienced meaning that he is likely to make mistakes, I don't think the villa fans would be as patient with him as we were. If he fails he would be unlikely to get another prem job.

I just get the feeling that there is more to this than meets the eye. Maybe that they are talking to Moyes or Coyle on the quiet, with Bobby being Lerner's plan B?

I think this Wigan fan makes some valid points, especially about our fans being patient with him

  3. I posted this on the Gen's thread yesterday

    "General.

I'm sure that the board of Aston Villa will deliberate the appointment of the next manager very seriously indeed to ensure the mistakes of last season aren't repeated. I'm also sure that whoever you appoint will be briefed fully on the goals & and direction the board wish to take the club in. Whoever you appoint in my eyes will be an improvement on GH but thats just personal. The appointment you make now will indicate what the realistic goals for the future are. For example:

Ancellotti - serious about pushing on to the level of CL football & attracting top quality players to VP

Moyes - Serious about challenging for a top six position, UEFA cup football & attracting good solid quality proffesionals to VP

Martinez - Serious about maintaining our premiership status and attracting players that want to use Villa as a stepping stone to other clubs & not really challenging for any honours unless we have a lucky cup run.

McLaren - Serious about completely ignoring the feelings of the fans that you covet enough to take the time & effort to trawl through hundreds of emails weekly. If this guy is appointed then unfortunately the board will lose a lot of the trust & credibility, which is rightly deserved, with the fans.

Appointing Maclaren after GH would be akin to replacing Gary Glitter as your baby sitter with Ian Huntley!!!

General - the decision the board take on the next manager will not only send out a message to the fans on the boards ambition but also a message to the players and to the rest of football. Please bear in mind my comments."

I stand by these words. Whichever manager the board appoints will send a message of its intention out. Can anyone here seriously tell me by appointing RM we are sending a message of intent of being serious about challenging for european places or domestic honours?? I'm not saying that the appointment of RM is right or wrong it just contradicts all the "5 year plan" "we want to challenge at the highest level" spin that we have been told by Randy & the board!!!

I actually think McClaren is a better coach than Martinez

  4. Say if wigan had lost there last two games and gone down, does anyone think we would have considered him?

He was actually 15 mins away from relegation. Doubt they would of considered him either. Fickleness.

    Correct. One goal basically.

I think we are making a mistake :(

  5. We don't/never have attracted top players though...the best way forward for us is to find the top players when they are young and develop them ourselves.

Exactly - it's CL football and outrageous wages that attract the top players. Anyone think Van Der Vaart went to Spurs because of Harry Redknapp?

Well its not outrageous wages with van der Vaart as spurs have a wage cap

  6. We might as well aim for Di Matteo as well if people think a young promising people who play attractive football is the way forward. He's no worse than Roberto Martinez. He got the sack because obviously West Brom didn't give him enough time (despite promoting them and beating teams like Arsenal away), where as Dave Whelan has given Martinez all the time in the world and it paid off. The same logic could have applied to Matteo too. It's fair to say Hodgson did a better job at West Brom and I'm sure he would have done the same at Wigan if the same scenario arrived.

So how about it. Di Matteo as well? Or am I sensing double standards just because his name isn't floating about?

I would say Di Matteo and Martinez are very similar

  7. For me Martinez ticks a lot of the boxes...

    1) Prem experience.

    2) Recent Prem experience

    3) Likable manager who players respect

    4) Desire to play attractive football

    5) Can work with a budget

    6) Works with the Board to develop the club. Not just rinse the coffers then run off at the first sign of trouble.

If it's not to be Moyes then RM would get my full backing.

ill give him my full backing too, however the problem is he is not a big enough name to attract high profile players to take us to the next level or to talk the likes of Downing etc into staying. Its a massive negative that outweights all his positives. Its not ambitious in the slightest.

    I couldnt agree more.

When Houllier came in and said we are a mid table club 7th - 12th that annoyed more because I thought our ambitions were higher. I can now safely say that mid table and dont get relegated seems to be the new plan

  8. For me Martinez ticks a lot of the boxes...

    2) Recent Prem experience

    3) Likable manager who players respect

    4) Desire to play attractive football

    6) Works with the Board to develop the club. Not just rinse the coffers then run off at the first sign of trouble.

If it's not to be Moyes then RM would get my full backing.

    I agree completely.

Moyes or Martinez. The other realistic options don't excite me. These two do, in different ways.

Moyes for his work at Everton and the fact that he is an established Prem manager, has good transfer experience with little money & always gets his team playing 100% for the cause, much like MON did.

Martinez because I think we're a big enough club that he could be with us for years and years and could build a good team, if given time by the fans. He likes to play a passing game and if he has bigger funds available for better defenders, could start a new revolution at Villa.

    Players from previous clubs?

    Moyes - Baines & Jagielka

    Martinez - N'Zogbia &... McCarthy? Rodallega?

You forgot Figueroa from Wigan and maybe their keeper

Christ we are turning into Wigan lol

  9. Staggering!

I thought Whelan would be giving us a public bitch slap.

    It does look like Martinez

Seems like he gets on very well with Whelan though and may show him some loyalty. Wouldnt suprise me if he did because he seems like a nice bloke himself.

This could drag out some more........

  10. No sorry but that's whitewashing the whole season. Houlliers appointment was an abject failure on all fronts. Easy to say he would have been great as there is no way of knowing, just as easy to say he would have got us relegated next season.

We beat Arsenal and Liverpool under the guidance of GMac while GH was too sick in hospital to have any influence.

Quite a lot fo the backroom and player problems were under his watch.

MON lost our most influential player in Barry and replaced him with Milner who became our most influential player.

GH lost our most influential player in Milner and replaced him with Makoun who showed he is nowehere near good enough for the Prem yet, if ever.

If he would have stayed I am quite confident he would have gotten us relegated.

In my opinion, the clubs one appointment was farce.

I completly disagree with all of that, its all speculating anyway but I think he would have done well after a full summer in charge.

  11. What the hell have an American Football team got to do with an English Premier League Football team?

They are both sports teams with the same owner.

Therefore it's legitimate for Villa fans to examine Randy's stewardship of the Browns for clues about how he runs things.

It's not a direct comparison, but it's relevant.

He isnt very popular with Browns fans is he???

Im afraid my knowledge of American football is limited lol

  12. I feel the board have to get it right this time. The Houllier appointment and the subsequent statements where they pretty much said fans don't know what they're talking about, were disrespectful and tarnished a previously excellent relationship.

They do need to listen to the fans in some part but need to balance emotion and sentiment with business sense.

I think the Houllier appointment was the right one, I can understand where they were going with that and what they were trying to achieve.

You are right though, I think Lerner needs to be very careful this time round

  13. If it really is true. That we only needed to provide 60m to get Benitez and didnt because of that reason then I'm really disappointed with Randy. 20m of it will come from Young.

Where would the other £40m have come from though?

from RL, its been 2years since he spent properly on transfers. Bent, Ireland, Makoun didnt cost much more than Milner and Gardner. Its our last Summer to splurge before the requirement come into play. Its a huge Summer and one which will define our future direction under RL.

    Time will tell,

If we were to end up with Martinez do you think he could bring Figueroa, N'Zogbia and Rodallega with him

  14. If it really is true. That we only needed to provide 60m to get Benitez and didnt because of that reason then I'm really disappointed with Randy. 20m of it will come from Young.

Where would the other £40m have come from though?

    Downing £25m

    Cuellar £8m

    Warnock, Dunne ?

£25m Downing, do you think we would get that??

I would imagine about £15-£18 tops

  15. If it really is true. That we only needed to provide 60m to get Benitez and didnt because of that reason then I'm really disappointed with Randy. 20m of it will come from Young.

    Plus other sales......

In hindsight, i think its bollox.

It probably has more to do with Benny wanting control of contracts, the very thing that caused MoN to up tools.

Your probabaly right there, I wonder how many managers would be happy with not having control over players contracts though???

  17. 'Villa have made it clear they won't be spending much money over the summer' What???!! When have we said that?? We've got to re-build this summer, how are gonna do that without spending? I've lost so much respect lately for SSN, talking bollocks!

I have got a feeling that may be true.

I think we will spend whatever we get in for selling players

based on what? iirc the exact same things were being said in jan

As I said its just a feeling I have. I would imagine if we genertate about £30m on the sales of young and downing then I think that is what we will have to spend.

I may be wrong so dont quote me on this its just a feeling I have

  19. Looks like its going to be Martinez and i never knew he was just 37,he looks 10 years older, must be all the stress.....it was great that Randy cancelled Mclarens interview because of us lot ;-)
is mcClaren any worse than coyle or martinez though really? I dont think he is not that i want any of them personally

I don't think McLaren would be all that bad as some make out. His time abroad will have made him a much wiser manager I'm sure. Martinez has probably shown enough to merit a bigger job, but still quite a bit of a risk. Coyle is Scottish, and while the Scots are generally shit at playing the game, they do seem to have the knack of managing teams.

I really have no idea now who will be manager. Its the biggest cliffhanger since the whole who shot jr saga in dallas :D
