We’ve varied how the midfield set up a fair bit this year, flat 3, 1 défensive with 2 AM, 2 defensive with an AM/No 10. Unfortunately, it’s been pretty much the same names regardless of how they play. I’m not saying square pegs in round holes, but it’s definitely not horses for courses.

If we had purchased him for 44m on a 4 year contract, we’d have charged our finances 11m a year, presume that’s where the calculation came from. We then paid his wages. In hindsight, yes too much, but felt about right at the time ??

A front 4 of Ollie up front with Zaha, Grealish and Traore supporting behind, would do for me next season. He’ll have 2 years left on his contract in the summer and I think Palace will let him leave. Not convinced there would be too much interest given Covid. £65m plus c. £160k a week ????

Given COVID and the Barca fire sale, I think those prices are pretty accurate. I grant you the wages would be a concern. Ref Dembele, he’s only 23, Jack’s injury record at that age was pretty awful too.

Clearly the second, but I could just as easily ask, do you want 7th and struggle to attract players to improve the team, or 5th, take advantage of COVID economics and attract a couple of worldies and win the Premier and Europa League next season ??

I think players that can’t get in at a club in the Champions League then look at clubs that could qualify next season. Where do you find such clubs ???? Next step down is Europa League. I also think national managers want players to be used to travelling internationally and performing well against clubs that play a different style than the player is used to. Playing in the Europa demonstrates this.

Last summer Dean had 2 player lists, 1 for if we stayed up and 1 for if we get relegated. With the top of the table so tight at the moment he’s probably looking at 3..... top 10, Europa League and Champs League. With COVID economics still in place, Europa, or even that last Champs League spot would really allow us to flex our financial muscles. Not sure where everyone else is expecting us to finish, but can I throw 1 name out there. Ousmane Dembele at Barca, age 23, contract will have 12 months remaining and Barca are likely to have a fire sale.

Completely agree by the way, but do love the way this thread swings from discussing whether or not Benteke could still do a job for us and the suggestion that we should go snap up Messi.
