  1. We lose to a last minute deflected goal.

Sack the manager, all the players are shit ......

If last few minutes don’t happen ..we are brilliant,we are going to finish top 6 ....

There are random events in any game,we have beaten Wolves last year and year before  with last minute goal mostly undeserved ,this year it’s their turn.

We weren’t brilliant but international breaks with players from Argentina and Brazil doesn’t do us any favours.

We lose 3-0 with minimal attacking threat is time to worry.

    Just back from Bond

is it fair to say it’s the worst Bond film ever ?
i mean it’s not really a Bond film , everything you loved (or hated) about Bond has been removed  … , it was like a nod and a wink to every Bond film whilst doing everything they could to make it as un-Bond as possible .. and then what you  were left with was a kinda jumbled mess that made no real sense .

It has some moments , it’s not terrible … it’s just not really Bond

You know how when it’s late night and you are channel hopping  and Casino Royale is three quarters of the way though and you really should just switch the tv off but you stay and watch the rest of the film even though you’ve seen it 20 times …. I just don’t see anyone ever wanting to watch this Bond film a second time …guess I’ll know the answer to that when it’s on ITV3 at 23:00 on a Thursday night in a few years time

Quantum of Solace takes some beating as the worst Bond film.I think there was a strike by scriptwriters at the time so there was at least some excuse.

But I agree there is a true test of any film that when you are channel hopping late at night even though you have seen it many times you stay up to watch it,there are some films you can’t turn off ,Withnail is one ,Good the Bad Uglyetc another

@mjmooney absolutely.  I'm still of the opinion that genres only exist so you know which shelves to look at in the shop.

@Big Salad I'm torn between the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams and the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian.   Hitch Hikers is a much easier recommendation, Douglas Adams is just a master of the English language and the books are hilarious.  I'd go as far as to day it's the best five book trilogy ever written.   Aubrey-Maturin is a bit more niche, it's a "historically accurate" tale of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars.  The plot is mostly the same in every book, Aubrey falls into a bucket of shit and emerges smelling of roses but O'Brian is another author whose prose are utterly delightful. The gentle humour, the ensemble cast of well rounded characters, even the HMS Surprise becomes a character on some level. 20 books which were written over 35 years and the rarest of rare things, a movie adaptation which was actually good.

As for me?  I'd been on a long kick of reading about WW2 and The Cold War and it's bought me back to John Le Carre.  I'd read Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Spy who came in from the Cold years ago and I read his final book Agent Running in the Field pretty much on release just to see Le Carre's take on post Brexit Britain (he wasn't a fan) and now I'm about half way through A Perfect Spy which a lot of people consider to be his best work.   I'm still at the point where the strands haven't been pulled together but clearly it's the work of a masterful author at the top of his game.  If you love 80's Cold War stuff then I can highly recommend it even at this point.

Tinker  Tailor is such a brilliant book.I think I must have read it 3 or 4 times. He is such a beautiful writer and Smiley is a very enigmatic character.

I enjoyed Smileys people but I didn’t really connect with A perfect spy.

I have really enjoyed Ben Macintyre’s factual books about the Cold War especially The Spy and The Traitor where he describes how we smuggled a top Russian KGB defector out of Moscow in 1990s

  4. Apparently Ronaldo has scored more goals against us than any other premier league team.

Why do we seem to be the favourite team for great players to score against?I am sure there are many others players than seem to fill their boots when they play us ,Lampard,Gerrard and Fowler etc

You must mean a different Antony Beevor, because the one that I am talking about only writes stuff about WW II and not fiction.

His book  about the battle of Stalingrad was brilliant.

This is what I love about Dean, when you look at his back room appointments, Terry, Shakespeare, AM, he has the confidence in his own ability to surround himself with strong personalities.

I think that says a lot about the guy.

There is a saying in business that you should try and employ people better than you.
Not that these appointments are actually better than him but as you state he is making appointments that are making us stronger without worrying how it might affect his position.

Jack will never be irrelevant to AVFC. He's woven into our history as firmly as Pongo Waring, Peter McParland,  Charlie Aitken, Gary Shaw, Denis Mortimer,  Brian Little, Paul McGrath, Dwight Yorke, Martin Laursen and many others.  I'm an old guy so I've watched and idolised all but one of these players including McParland at Wembley when I was 8 years old. Pongo was the only one who was before my time, lol.)

Whatever the stress and upset caused by them leaving or coming to the end of their careers, they should be loved and held in high esteem because for a time they were our heroes. In a few short years Jack's career will be over, but he'll always be one of us.

    Couldn’t agree more.

Cowans one of the greatest and loyal Villa players played for a couple of Italian clubs and even Blackburn but is still a  Villa legend.

For me Barry is not given respect he deserves due to him leaving for Man City.He was an exceptional player for us for 10 seasons and always gave his best, many revere players who contributed much less.

Grealish’s contribution to us in the past 4 years has been  magnificent and we should appreciate what we had and not let him leaving cloud those memories.

  8. Went to the 4th day at Lords and had a brilliant day and expected a victory the next day.I still haven’t recovered from that defeat but really enjoying this test where we seem destined to win.

I must say although we lost the last test it shows how brilliant test cricket can be.No other sport can keep your attention for so long and provide so much tension and excitement.

  9. I have to admit Southgates treatment of aJack is damping my joy at reaching the final.

On the other hand ,Sterling was our best player on the night and I think he is keeping Jack out of the team.Look at Rashford and Sancho they aren’t playing at all.

I think Villa fans and Jack have to be grateful for any time he gets on the pitch.
Jack will only get on the pitch if we need a goal.

    It is utterly superb.

Peter Vaughan was brilliant in it.

Edit: Strong, McKee, Craig, Ecclestone, &c. obviously terrific.

Just been rewatching this with my kids.Just on the bit where they try to uncover police corruption in the Met in 1970 but aren’t able to do anything about it,seems very relevant today.

Must say Daniel Craigs geordie accent is atrociously cliched but otherwise acting is really good.

  11. I think he has been excellent for us when he has played.Yes against Palace we were poor defensively but think he wasn’t main culprit. His main strength is in the air and in certain games this could be a real asset.

To have a central defender  who cost 3 million and can come in when required and do a good job is a really good thing.Ferguson was a master of having a few bit part players in certain positions. It then means you can spend big amounts on other positions.

I can only echo this,  if I am feeling depressed about life i go on a small heath forum and genuinely realise how lucky I am.  (This really is true,  there is no way I can moan about life when there are still words removed from small heath around talking rubbish)

I was born in Brum,  and yes the chances of being born into a small heath family are slim,  maybe 20 %.  We are all winners in that respect.

But looking back on my life,  the Villa is at least part of the foundation of my life and has brought me much happiness.

If I had my life again but was born a small heath.  I don't know but as a life it would be 10% as good maybe.

School,  work and general life as a small heath can't be good year after year and I hope this continues till they go bust.

I **** hate them with every molecule in my body,  it has got worse since I left the UK as well.

    Agree totally.

I was brought up in an area equidisant from St Andrews and Villa Park but fortunately my older brother decided to support Villa so we all followed.

SHA -the ground, the team, the fans, the general ethos is so bleak and always has been.To have that instead of Villa,I would probably be needing some medication for it.

  13. I live in an area where they have just been introduced. So many roads are now closed whilst  one main road now has a 1 mile jam all the time.

Not sure what this achieves. Some journeys are not feasible if they require a number of bus changes and walking.

I would always use public transport if it involves similar travelling time.Around here it’s extremely divisive, some roads are now extremely quiet and people who don’t have to commute in the morning are happy.People that live on these new congested roads and people that need to commute are unhappy.

Who makes these decisions are they accountable? No.Is it reducing traffic ?No it’s moving it to busier roads.

To me having 1 mile tailbacks, and increasing journey times don’t make sense enviromentally.

  14. He was ok yesterday but he hasn’t recaptured his form post lockdown last year.

What I don’t understand is when we are playing out from the back Mings passes to Luiz who then passes it back to Mings to play a long ball.I don’t remember Luiz ever taking the ball himself and passing forward.Surely he is closer to our other players and Luiz has greater passing ability. Is it a confidence thing?Or is it tactical so we don’t lose the ball in a dangerous area.

You know something from that season (league winning) that I still think about, why could we not of got the extra 2 people in against the Albion for a full house?

I think there was a lot more people in there that night unofficially.I don’t ever remember the Holte being so packed.

For large parts of that game I couldn’t breathe.

You've changed your story and that is disappointing for consistency, which I feel is important for credibility. Originally you said a player told you, but now it's through another player. Any insight into how you know the player you do know and how the conversation went about in order for you to get the information? It helps your credibility.

Also, any reason why this isn't something that came out a year ago? Or a few months ago? It seems convenient that the story came out when Jack is injured when presumably this might have been mentioned months ago when he was playing. There's no reason not to say he's addicted to this or that when he is fit.

If you read my first post carefully it says “through a player” you assumed I meant the Villa player.

I was being opaque because I do not want my source to be identified.

You don't have to say the name, but do you mind painting a little scene about the delivery of this message?

Were you out for a beer with this guy who trusts you so much that he told you this? I quite like stories so the more details the better for me.

I'd want some decent details, like how you know the player, how often you hang out and share information. The who, what, why, how, when of storytelling. Did he tell you to keep it a secret and then you went and posted it on a message board? Do you think he'd be miffed at you if he found out you posted your info in here? How would he react? Would he find it funny and say, 'Next round's on you next time?' or do you think you've put his trust in you at risk?

This is the last I post on this subject.

I know someone who is a player at another club. The ex Villa player told this player about Jack’s problems.
I have no proof ,no blood tests,no photos .
I don’t really want to believe it either.

But the rumour was sleeping drugs not painkillers.  Nobody has left us recent enough because if Jack had been addicted to drugs since Sept/Oct it would be known by now as the drug issue would’ve started well before that, picked up in drug tests and playing wouldn’t have been there.

I’m calling BS on this, unless you can tell us the players name or at least when they left us.

All I can say it is a player who left us last summer. He still has a lot of contacts with many existing players.

When I first heard all this talk I dismissed it but this new information came unsolicited and I can think of no reason why this source should lie.
