  1. Has he been here long enough to qualify to play for England? He has the goalkeeping ability of Pope without the wooden legged hoofs and the footballing ability of Pickford without letting every shot in and dropping every cross.

    When asked about Jack...

Mount coming on in that position or similar position again I thought had an excellent impact on the game he presses so well he moves the ball so quickly and he had a real impact in setting up 2 or 3 chances in an immediate impact on the game"

You might think I'm trolling with that last one, but no, he actually said that.

Am I misremembering or is the only chance Mount created the one where Grealish drew in the defenders (and drew a foul) before playing Mount in to roll an easy ball left into loads of space for AMN?

But that's where I think Southgate's being a bit proud, even though the standard of player is higher in England's national squad, Southgate's assuming the managerial setup is too.

Agree 100%. The squad is (usually) of a very high quality but I have seen not one bit of evidence that would suggest that is even remotely the case in the dugout. IMO if the 20 PL managers and Southgate were ranked in order of quality Southgate would be 22nd.

Any guesses on what convoluted way Southgate will come up with to avoid playing Jack today?

In my dream last night he put a CM at left wing. I think it was a made up player though, or someone from CM2 back in the day.

He'll play 5-3-2. 3CBs (Gomez, Keane, Coady) behind 3DMs (Dier, Phillips, Rice), Rashford and Kane up front.

Konsa weakness is in the air

I haven't really had that impression since lockdown.

Whoscored has him at 12 Aerials won 4 lost so far this season, Mings is almost identical but slightly better at 13 won 4 lost.

That's one way of looking at it. Another would be that the National side doesn't play the same way Villa play, or any English club side plays, really. So all the players when they first come in need to be able to "see the way they [England] work". Often international games are much more of a mismatch in quality than the Premier League, so England may need for some games to work on having 80% possession, or on having far less of the ball than (say) Spain - and then the team needs to have worked on particular things, like whether wide players track back with the other side's full backs, or whether they move into the space vacated, ready for a counter-attack, for example.

Another thing to add is that a bit like Wayne Rooney used to do, Jack often tries to get the ball back himself - chasing the ball - as a bit of a free spirit and wander wherever on the pitch , and that's absolutely fine if Villa want him to do that, but England might want a more zonal approach, where player(s) don't do that, they instead need to take up particular positions when the ball is lost.

So I don't think Southgate is either bigging himself up, or being critical of Jack in that instance. I do think it's baffling why he hasn't been selected into squads more, other than it being a legacy of an impression Jack gave when he was with the U-21s, which Southgate has struggled to shake off, to his own detriment, perhaps.

Eh, I can see what you mean but I definitely think Southgate has this impression that England training is higher intensity than Villa training.

Here's his quote about Grealish from last time:

"He’s dipped his toes, I think importantly for him he’s had the chance to work with us and see the intensity that we work at."

I don't know for sure whether he's intending to imply it, but I'm definitely inferring that he thinks that is the case from this quote.

Wasnt it agreed by the teams that if the league is called off due to covid that current places will stand.....just sayin!

Not just that, it would be done on points per game and then goal difference per game. We'd actually win the league.

Unfortunately I don't think they've agreed a minimum number of games required and if they did I doubt it would be 3 😅

Buendia and Sarr are the only two I’d be looking at, at the moment tbh.

The latter will probably go to a top team and I’m not sure Buendia is exactly what we need right now albeit a very good player.

Completely agree. As it stands right now, Sarr is the only player in the EFL that I'm certain would improve our first XI long term.

Buendia, Cantwell, King, Grant, Hughes, Benrahma, etc. are all good players who would improve our squad but the money they'd cost wouldn't be worth the amount of value they would provide us IMO.

I Mean Come On GIF by Late Night with Seth Meyers

Thinking Bielsa is a better coach than Smith is a perfectly fine and defensible opinion to hold but this guy looks like exactly the kind of football hipster that would wank over Bielsaball even if he wasn't a Leeds fan.

Coaches U9s and refers to them playing keep away as rondos. 🙄

The kind of man who probably thinks Busquets was the best player for Pep's Barca.

Leeds had 3 shots on target and they all went in, your goalkeeper is on average going to save one of the shots on target. Even Adrian made a few saves the other night

Yeah and not just that, they were difficult chances. First goal was at full sprint, under pressure, weaker foot, edge of the area. Second goal was a tight angle with the keeper very close. Neither of these go in more than 1 time out of 5.

  11. 1 minute ago, Demitri_C said:

And behold Leeds almost did them.

No they didn't, not even close. Leeds were extremely lucky to lose by one, Steve Bruce levels of luck. I think they might have been so unlikely to win that they actually had the lowest xPTS of any side in any game this season.

Liverpool were closer to winning on Sunday than Leeds were to winning that game 😆

    Since watford humilated them

Mane played that game. Hardly proof they're shit without him is it?

    11 minutes ago, Demitri_C said:

Yeah and going firqard they looked so poor.

They scored 2 and had 14 shots, 8 on target. That's not poor by any metric, even though they were against the best defence in the league this season.

  12. 8 minutes ago, Demitri_C said:

    I dont.

You think a team that wins 11 games out of 11 scoring 30 and conceding only 5 is not very good? I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

    This season is showing.

He's only missed one match this season 😆 First match they've lost without him in 3 years. Much more likely they just came up against a great side

It goes to show how reliant they are on mane. Without him they are not very good.

I think that's a large exaggeration. In the last 2 seasons he's missed 5 games and they won all 5 (13 goals for, 1 against). He also came off the bench in 5, which they won all of (15G, 3A). And he went off injured in the first half in one, and guess what they won that too.

Mane is world class but without him Liverpool are still great, 11 wins from 11 in games he's played less than 35 minutes in (30G, 5A).

But I don't hear about Leeds past success or what they used to be. They've become so arrogant its like they're currently that team, when in reality you've finally got out of the championship and have had a couple of decent results.

Do you not enjoy that though? It makes the games seem like they're worth more if both sides talk themselves up beforehand. I'd love have that bite to every fixture.

I much prefer fans thinking their team is god's gift than the stuff like the wet flannel Arsenal fans asking Villa to "take care" of Martinez like he's a stray dog and hoping our game against them is 0-0 so both keepers get a cleansheet. Blurgh.
