  1. Southgate is a wonderful man who deserves huge credit for creating such a positive culture with England but he is a god awful overly defensive minded football tactician.
If he was any good one of the premiership teams would have already hired him. If he does get a job after England it will be at a Norwich or a Fulham - that’s basically his level.

  2. Beale is extremely highly regarded. He’s pretty much guaranteed championship job offers. Issue will be if/when one of the relegated clubs come for him due to their relative financial strength in the championship, assuming they didn’t bet the house on staying up, would be a clever move for him.

Burnley will be in financial meltdown, Watford I imagine are a hard no due to the owners and Norwich will have smith long term you suspect so no obvious candidates this year.

Next year will be interesting and even more reason to go big and secure European football.

  3. If we’ve learned anything it should be sell high when you have a chance. Davis is never ever going to be top 6 quality so if that’s the aim we should take forest or Norwich for as much as we can while we have the opportunity. If we get 10-15 for him, sell ings for 20 to 25 and add on the existing budget, you have the opportunity to get someone special who really is going to make the difference…..and you still have archer as the youth back up option to Watkins.

  4. he’s been in the press a number of times this last season for getting hammered, cheating on his mrs and there were loads of red flags going off re how pissed he was celebrating the league win.

He clearly has a problem with alcohol and needs to get that resolved if he’s ever going to really reach his potential.

Opinions change in life not just football, Grealish is still a fantastic player, the best I’ve seen in a Villa shirt. He hasn’t fitted in straight away at Man City but just give him time, he will show his true capabilities

He will come good…..unless his lack of professionalism gets in the way. With Alvarez and Haaland added to Foden and Mahrez he’s currently 6th choice for 3 spots assuming sterling stays.

Try telling that to a Ghanaian!

Not the actual handball itself that bothers me so much, but watching Gyan miss the pen from just outside the tunnel and celebrating so openly, shows a lack of class imo

Imagine villa get to the fa cup final and Suarez does exactly the same thing again as he did v Ghana and that results in us winning the cup.

He would be treated as a hero by pretty much 99.9% of villa fans. that’s exactly why Gerrard what’s him here because his mentality is win at all costs.

Cannot see him going to Newcastle. Can you imagine their record on human rights sitting well with such an intelligent man who has made a stand before for LGBT inclusion ? I know money talks but he is a different animal to most footballers . He can make a stand and debate it

He’ll take the 100k a week x 4 year contract  like everyone else in football would.

  8. I’ll be polite and say that there are some extremely mistaken posters on this thread.

The facts are that Bissouma was released “under investigation” with no charge and with no bail conditions. The other chap he was with had his bail conditions extended.

This means that the police had sufficient evidence to extend bail for the other individual and despite the alleged offence happening in a packed club, with a tonne of cctv they didn’t have enough evidence to do the same for Bissouma.

Looks like spurs, arsenal and Newcastle are in for him so will be extremely tough to land.

    Based on?

The man has basically failed at only 2 things in his entire life. One was winning the league with Liverpool and the other was England.

It’s a very brave opinion to suggest he’s not going to succeed as a manager with us considering a, the bar is so low considering our performance over the last 15 years, b; the support he has from the board in recognising this squad is not good enough  to challenge and c, the level of player he is attracting to the club.

Surely if he was such an incompetent manager this would be open knowledge in the football community and none of these players - with lots of other elite managers they could work for - would join to play for him?

I hope that you’re ready to eat some serious humble pie next season.

I do think with all the transfer rumours that Mings is moving on this summer but not to Middlesborough

It will be a sad day for the club if it does happen BUT it will be more criminal if we sell him and sign Luis Suarez who is the opposite of Mings

What’s that? A serial winner? Unfortunately you don’t get points in games for playing really nice people.

We’d be out of our minds to turn down 30m for Ty when we could roll that (+ another 20m) into a young elite European level defender.  He will always be remembered fondly for helping us get up and stabilise but he’s played his part now.

How was it blatantly Targett? Same issues happened when he left and as I said if he was afraid of fans he would have went to Bournemouth or Luton and not Newcastle which is the ultimate goldfish bowl

They were speaking about match day pressure. This is what Martinez said:

”I seen it from covid. Player was playing and I was think oh my god what a player. Comes to first time with a crowd and he’s hiding. Last season with no pressure and you were doing amazing in training but when pressure and fans watching you’re hiding, don’t want the ball too much and don’t want to go forward like before. I can see it”

Neither Konsa or Luiz have ever hid and certainly don’t play in positions where they are meant to go forward so If that’s not target then I’m a bloody goat.

Re Newcastle he only took the move because he was guaranteed to play and to be fair they’ve been on an amazing run. We all know that the Geordies will be on his back quicker than anything when expectations start to increase rapidly next season.

Martinez never said it was him and people jumped on that it was. It was clearly Konsa since you know Targett went to a team with a bigger attendance than us and has done well

It was blatantly Target. Did you see his video when he left where he basically implied there was no point in even trying to challenge a player of digne’s calibre.

Either way I highly doubt we’ll ever see him play a competitive game for us again.

  13. Gerrard’s spoken at length re the mental fragility of this team and Matt Targett is the very definition of mental fragility. Even Martinez blatantly referenced him in his interview with Ben foster re the impact that  crowds returning had on him.

There’s no future for him here, even as a sub, if Newcastle don’t want him.

Most of those “turds” will be still here next season and most will still be first team players.  Yes we’ll likely bring in four or five players and yes one or two current first teamers may leave but most that will likely leave are fringe players.  So seven or eight of the current first XI “turds” will be next season first XI as well. So he needs to start polishing…

He’s only going to keep the players that he think can adapt or the ones where he can’t land his significantly better targets.

There is a reason why we are being linked with so many centre backs, midfielders and even strikers. Realistically, only Mings, Mcginn and Watkins might be left in the starting line up with a question mark over them come the start of the season but all are likely to have genuine competition for their starting spots for the first time in their villa careers.

  15. 4 minutes ago, Zatman said:

Cracking man management. Pretty sure he said it after Wolves game and we won twice since then

He’s not going to sit there trying to polish the footballing equivalent of a turd (at the highest competitive level) when he knows he can attract a much better quality of player.

We all know Pep is 😉

You can buy all the players you want but you have to coach them still. He has been here 6 months and I couldn't tell you how we play. Do we play from the back, do we pump it to Watkins, so we play through midfield.

9 points from the last 11 is probably relegation form and of our players are overrated maybe but they arent a relegation team

Give it a rest and watch his video from earlier today where he’s made it abundantly  clear that some of the players are mentally (and technically) not capable of playing the more progressive way that he wants.

    He’s already started fixing that.

    120k a week not a chance surely

Works out at a 25m contract over 4 years.

He’d be at least 20m to buy if he was under contract so an absolute no brainer to pay him that purely from a financial perspective.

Will be interesting to see what kind of revenue we generate from the outgoing transfers this summer.

Targett, El Ghazi, Trezeguet, Guilbert, Sanson and Davis will all command a fee won’t they? Traore and Hause too perhaps? Surely there’s £30M+ amongst that lot at least?

70m there if we sell properly

Did he actually turn down Atleti? Is there evidence that there was a contract on the table. Last summer we signed Bailey who is a higher profile name than Kamara under Dean.

If Atleti were genuinely all in it'd be impressive, but I doubt it. Champions League and Simeone (also a good player, and a proven coach), I don't think that any player turns that down unless they were going to be peripheral vs Central here regardless of thinking Gerrard was a good midfielder in his time, with largely unknown coaching credentials.

Multiple outlets including the athletic are reporting that he turned down athletico Madrid.

Without meaning to be funny, under Lerner we signed a bunch of high potential signings from France 19-23. Amavi and Gueye in particular had high profiles (and they signed under Sherwood to their detriment). Kamara had he had big interest from huge clubs would have signed a pre contract months ago.

I think this is a good signing, but it's a bit of a stretch to describe it as beyond Aston Villa sans Steven Gerrard. I think it's fanciful.

He would not even have returned the phone call if Gerrard and Coutinho had not been here. He turned down Athletico Madrid - he’s not turning them down for dean smith.

  21. Isn’t it blatantly obvious that he persevered with the system he wants to play (i.e that similar to  the elite teams) to fully highlight the investment needed in the playing squad to the owners?

He bet it all on the summer and the early signs are that he is already attracting players that ordinarily wouldn’t even have taken the call from us.

    Disappointing.

I was thinking Mark could be being developed as a future manager for us given he's been here a few years now and considering the circumstances he produced a very capable performance in FA cup last season with the under 12s v Liverpool.

George Boateng was going on about enjoying working with him in an interview two weeks ago so with those two and Jedinak it's nice having guys at the club who know what it's like to play for us and can instill that in the next generation.

Perhaps he's decided to move on and try his hand at management somewhere but disappointing if this is a decision from above. Gerrard's acting like he's been here five years already.

Lolz. Let’s see where Delaney ends up, I highly doubt he’s going to end up in an equivalent role at an elite club. Club are being ruthless in their pursuit of progress and it’s great to see.

Wish Delaney the best but clearly the club have decided that we can do better.

  23. So he should just play defensive counter attacking football with average players that he inherited?

The man wants to compete properly and has clearly already made an assessment - after giving them plenty of opportunity to impress - that a lot of this squad is bang average and just not good enough to compete for a European position.
