Yeah good point, more than one way to skin the staying in the premier league cat, but for me what you mention is another reason to keep Smith. The blades are reaping the rewards of long term stability and sticking to a long term project.

For all the talk of sheffield utd doing well they are basically Newcastle playing "Bruceball". First & foremost they set up not to concede goals and they have done this very well indeed. They have only conceded 25 (only liverpool have conceded fewer) compared to our 52. They do not overwhelm teams with passing & posession, They are not outscoring teams at a massive rate (they have only scored 29, only 5 teams have scored fewer) many of their games they have much less of the ball & fewer shots than the opposition often only having 35-40% and 3 shots on target yet they are still picking up points because they are not conceding.

Look at the bruce, newcastle thread it is full of people saying they shouldn't have as many points as they have, it isnt sustainable, it's shit but ask any blades fan if it's shit.

We are basically going into every game needing to score 2 or 3 goals to even stand a chance of getting a point, That isn't sustainable...

I am fairly sure that if you asked 100 football fans to name even 5 of their players they would struggle

I would love a 1-0 win against palace where we only have 39% of the ball & 3 shots & gladly swap some of our better performing games against the bigger boys where we ended up with sod all for a boring draw here & there

The daft thing is that one of the few times they have actually come unstuck this season was actually at home against Newcastle where they didn't seem to cope very well playing against their own tactics and lost 2-0 despite Newcastle barely touching the ball (27%)

There is a great myth that we are playing this Dean Smith attacking free flowing football, plenty of people saying they would rather be relagated than have Big Sam in charge playing his crap football despite us generally being shit & by far one of the worst teams to watch for the majority of the season.

We will get shat on from a great height on Sunday, we are going down and i wouldn't be suprised if we fail to win more than 1 more game for the rest of the season.

My glass is well & truly half empty today 😕

    Here's a few:

    • March 2019: Arm injury vs. Forest (someone trod on his arm), subbed off, starts the game 3 days later vs Middlesbrough
    • September 2019: "Knock" vs Burnley at home, subbed off, starts the next game 7 dats later vs Norwich
    • December 2019: Knee injury vs. Man Utd, subbed off, misses the midweek game, plays 7 days later against Leicester
    • February 2019: TBC

And if you look at his Transfermarkt injury history (which is out of date and incomplete) he has a lot of very short-term injuries: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/anwar-el-ghazi/verletzungen/spieler/183720

Now I can completely understand the argument that AEG has done a lot of good stuff at Villa, and we should back our own player.

But the idea that his propensity to pick up lots of small injuries is just an invention (or indeed an "embarrassment") is condescending bullshit.

If anything it can also show the reverse. Gets booted/injured during a game, Is subbed off (whether this is at his own request or not and usually a sensibe option for anything like a tight hamstring/groin) and is generally fit & ready to go even a few days later. Missing 6 weeks or so in 6 years is better than 90% of players. Looks like he has pretty good recovery compared to most and barely misses any games.

Over the last ten games only Liverpool and Man City have taken more points than Southampton, and whilst they might have the worst home form in the league that statistic is skewed by their early season form, recently they haven't been that bad at St Mary's they've beat and drew with Tottenham there beaten Palace in the last month or so. Point being I don't think the Southampton game was ever going to be as easy as many were expecting, and just because we lost it doesn't mean to say that we can't possibly hope to beat anyone else, as we will play teams in far worse form than Southampton have been in between now and the end of the season, and also teams with less to play for.

They have been on a good run sure but 6 of their 19 points from the last 10 games have come from beating us twice. They had only won 3 games all season (& 2 of those were home to Norwich & Watford) before dicking us 3-1 at VP which seemed to give them a massive boost

  4. Something blew in my eye at lunchtime today, no idea if it was a fly, bit of general dirt etc but it is still sore now & vision is a bit blurry. Wouldn't want to be running around trying to play football nevermind doing anything else. Could easily have just been a glancing blow to the eye which can be very painful for a good while afterwards & irritating/sore for hours, hell there have been multiple UFC fights ended because of an eye poke

Would they have offered anything that John Terry can't?

guess we'll never know but 3 is better than 1 i guess and expect some of the under 21/23 would have maybe benefitted from training with people like Hutton/Whelan. Sure they might not be world beaters but they are hard working pros & seemed to be good guys as far as attitude/team spirit went. The 2 of them combined for about half of what we were paying mccormack not to be anywhere near the squad would have seemed like a gamble worth taking

So out of the players we "should have kept this season as well" (Jedi, Hutton and Whelan) 2 has retired and the other one is playing at Fleetwood.

Yeah, I'm sure they all would have been extremely useful.

I think most of it would have just been some benefit having them in & around the place.. Handy to have a bit of experience & know-how around when you have lots of new players & things are going wrong on the pitch. If we had paid a million quid to keep Hutton & Whelan around for the season (lets face it nobody else was going to offer them 10 grand a week) and only really used them on the training pitch it woud have probably been worth it

I've thought about this a lot.

Imagine if that Kevin Friend decision in that Palace game (Lansbury goal) will end up being the difference between survival and relegation.

It won't, being shit in 50% of the games and losing against teams below/around us will be the difference

I wonder how many shots Southampton will have on target at the weekend.10 minimum probably!

They had 8 shots on target when they won 3-1 at VP a few weeks ago & we were actually above them in the league before KO...

And they have a good case in showing what Milwaukee has done. I hope people don't get too frustrated with me using Milwaukee as a comparison, but in reality there is something in common. It is one of the smallest market teams in NBA, and has Giannis. They're the number one team for a second year in a row. I get it that football is not the same, it needs more than one player to succeed, but at Villa Wes has Sawiris to share the burden.

Or maybe put it another way: Wes is now used to a big star cult in both "his" teams. It's working perfectly in NBA, and could possibly work here too. If he let's Jack go, what does he have left? I don't know if he's buying a small team "teamplay" culture. I could be wrong, but I doubt he'll want that as his plan A.

I would imagine if they match what they are paying Giannis & offer Grealish haf a million quid per week guaranteed for the next 4 years he would probably sign the contract...

Do you think Bruce is a better manager than Benitez? From your posts it seems to indicate it

Rafa has won more Championship titles than promotion specialist Bruce never mind rest of his cabinet

Benitez is ancient history, If he was english you would be calling him a dinosaur because the football newcastle played in the prem under him was absolutely shit

    Really?

I thought they were pretty dire. Not quite as bad as this season but still.

Cardiff were last seasons Newcastle when it comes to stats like passing, possession, touches and all that fancy stuff that Europeans like.

They just didn't get anywhere near the results Newcastle have this season.

Newcastle have been in the bottom 2/3 of every positive stat for the previous 2 seasons. The ony thing the have been near the top of is shots from distance

  12. 12 minutes ago, AVFCDAN said:

I saw one of those stat lists recently that lists things like possession, chances created, shots etc.. and Newcastle were 20th for everything, they are definitely in a false position as we all alluded to about 2 months ago when they were winning a lot of games.

They will probably just have enough to stay up but I doubt there's a Newcastle fan out there who is happy with Bruce as manager.

But they were exacty the same last year & the year before under football genius Benitez & people loved him

I listened to an interview with ol potato this morning, even the interviewer said ‘dust yourselves down’. Twice. Why do the media love him so much?!

Chris Wilder is doing a good job right?

A quick google of "dust ourselves down chris wilder" returns over 2 million results. Nearly every game they lose he says it, or occasionally he varies it to dust ourselves off

Is this the Cahill that let Richarlison just run past him the other day. I hope he plays when Palace come to villa park. Samatta will score a few.

it's also the same Cahill that has been part of the 6th best defence in the league this year... Palaces problem is putting the ball in the other goal, not keeping it out of theirs
