  1. I rarely drive into Birmingham City centre but my mum and dad and tickets to the Peaky Blinder thing at the Hippodrome. With no trains they were having second thoughts about going. I said I'd take them and have a day in town with my little one.

No issue until time to go home. It took 2 1/2 hours to get out of Edgbaston Street car park. An hour and a half of that not actually moving at all. Once out of the car park, some roads were a free for all. 2 lanes of traffic in a single lane, cars coming out of junctions down gaps on the wrong side of the road. Not my most enjoyable journey.

Sunday dinner is massively overrated and not even close to being worth the effort of cooking it.

I love cooking Sunday Roast. I get to drink Wine and beer while watching football or listening to music. I can drag it out all afternoon without a nag. When it's actually really easy and only occasionally have to do something.

    Disingenuous advertising.

Just seen one for branded ibuprofen tablets. The tagline? "No ibuprofen has been proven to be more effective".

No, of course it hasn't. Or less effective. Because ibuprofren is ibuprofen. It's all the same. Just buy the cheapest generic you can get.

I needed some the other week and walk past Waitrose on my way home. They didn't have any of the cheap ones. Only Nurofen and another that I couldn't see the price for. Thinking they couldn't be more than Nurofen I picked them up, got to the till..... £5.50! Sod that, I knew I had 2 tablets at home and got some the next day for 39p.

I used to be very critical of Waitrose's prices for usual household goods, but I bought a 4 pack of Waitrose bog roll 2 weeks ago on holiday and I've only just used the last bit. Considering that I was out having takeaways and pub meals every day, I was doing a fair old bit of shitting. I haven't worked out how much it ended up costing per poop, but that is bloody good value. Also, it didn't tear my arsehole to bits like B&M toilet roll does.

One for the cost of living thread but I went to buy 24 at morrisons yesterday, £9.99! For their own stuff. I'm sure it was about £5.50 a year ago.

I hope you're right. Sadly this shyster seems to squirm his way out of every situation.

Yes this really needs to stick. If it is thrown out, it could just be the help he needs to get re-elected.

Would it be done before the presidential election run? And if not can he still run while it is still undecided?

Looks like them soldiers are struggling a bit with that coffin. Not sure what it weighs, but lead lined apparently.

The one and only time I've done it was for my Great Uncle in Ireland. I was part of carrying him from the church  out of the town along a country lane to a hilly, bumpy graveyard on a windy day on the northwest coast of Ireland in January. Different pressures but a challenge nonetheless.

Again ... it certainly was not champagne football. I would describe it as stodgy.

You did not mention Bailey ... ok was not his best game. But you were positive about most of the players?

Gerrard's job is now to work on creativity - create more, better chances and put them away. It won't be quick.

Sorry yes did miss Bailey, nearly missed Ramsey too when writing it. He was a but frustrating to watch. Listening to the TV commentary though I think they were a bit harsh on his performance. He did have an impact and was a bit of a threat that didn't quite click. Southampton defended against Bailey quite well and he it got quite congested for him.

It was in Craig Butlers mad rant but it was in part true about Leon Bailey being a winger and not being played as one. Partly down to Southamptons tactics as much as ours but I think we would get more from him if he played wider and had more of the ball deeper with more space to attack.

Players like Bailey will frustrate at times, so it doesn't bother me too much, there will be games that he doesn't get much joy, but him and the rest of the team need to still use the ball quicker in the space thats created by attention to Bailey.

I can't for the life of me understand how I have never done that, being a former hockey goalie and all, but for some reason my knees never broke like that, only degenerated rapidly due to stress. So I have no real knowledge of what it feels like, but it looked suspiciously like a twist or weird landing that caused the issues, and he rubbed the side of his knee I think, which could indicate ligament damage or something like that.

But yeah, I fear he's out a good long while.

It was actually quite a while before I actually got it checked out and diagnosed. Every time I thought my knee was recovering, it would buckle again.

As for Kamara, hopefully it's not as bad as we fear and at worst back after the World Cup.

People worrying about ACL, I'm not so sure about that...

From the replays shown it looked like a weird lunge which may have tweaked his hamstring or groin?

I did think knee but my first thought was it was MCL rather than ACL. By no means an expert though, although I have previously torn my ACL.

  10. What an awful game and not an easy one to explain. My thoughts on some of the individual performances.

Martinez, very little to do. I've seen people comment on his time wasting. To be honest I love his Innate shithouse. Would I hate it as an opposition fan-yes, I even hated Trezeguets time-wasting and it did us over against Liverpool a couple of years ago. So a complete contradiction but Martinez get it right.

The back 4 I thought played well.

McGinn - set the tone for the game a bit really. Obviously struggling for form and don't think he had a great game but one way to play your way into form is to force it and getting stuck in like he did yesterday, will have to see if it works.

Watkins I thought had an ineffective game but I don't particularly think that was his fault. We really didn't use him, at all! You sort of saw his frustration when Ings came on as that allowed him to get stuck in and track back rather than being isolated and no balls to run onto.

Douglas Luiz, I've always thought he is better suited as a DM rather than a bit more forward like a lot prefer. Last night swayed me to agree with the majority, certainly with how we are playing currently.

Thought Ramsey played well and switching sides him and McGinn worked OK.

Coutinho I thought had a good game in context. Like Gerrard said prior to game, he looked like he was hurt and wanted to do something about it. I like what I saw, had we got control of the game it would have been much better.

After such an awful game it's hard for optimism and despite my summary there's not a lot there. There is a hell of a lot to sort out.

  11. Seems like most people are going to be paying the same rate. The exception being the ones who have had their fix for a while and it's lower than the energy price guarantee. Fixes will be lowered by no more than the guarantee and the very high fixes will by reduced the 17p electric and 4.2p gas, but anyone on those will most likely be able to get out their fix and go on the standard variable anyway.

  12. 7 hours ago, Davkaus said:

The caveat is "at a higher rate caused by recent energy price rises". I assume they're only applying this to customers who have taken on agreements for extremely expensive fixed prices well above the standard tariff.

If it was a flat reduction, as I'm on a fix from last year, they'll be paying me 0.2p per KWH for gas consumption.

My guess while reading it was that any reduction would only take it upto the standard variable and not below, I guess that's where the clarification is needed.

  13. I've been reading more into what is happening to those on fixes. Martin Lewis still says that there is to be further clarification but there does seem to be advice now on the government website.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/energy-bills-support/energy-bills-support-factsheet-8-september-2022

    Quote

If you’re on a fixed tariff

If you’re on a fixed tariff at a higher rate caused by recent energy price rises, your unit prices will be reduced by 17p/kWh for electricity and 4.2p/kWh for gas.

These unit prices have been passed to suppliers to ensure that they are used to calculate bills on time for 1 October.

Energy suppliers will adjust fixed tariffs automatically. Customers on fixed tariffs do not need to take any action to get the benefits of this scheme.

This seems too good to be true unless I'm interpretting it wrong, taking those figures off my fix takes it to 19.676p for electricity and 6.33p for gas. Comparing that with the 34p and 10.3p for standard variable and even what it is before the October rise. It just feels very low and that it won't work that way.

  14. In part due to events yesterday but the announcement of the plan for the energy assistance has been a shambles with more questions than answers.

Not sure if it's because he deleted it because the facts weren't clear or because of the criticism and arguments on his tweet about whether he was right to post it yesterday evening, but he said those on a fix might end up with a cheaper rate than the variable because if the way they were lowering the unit price being paid by customers also applied to fixes.

He obviously felt it was important as people were cancelling fixes when they might be better to stay.

So more waiting for it to be properly announced.

It also looks look the cap is applying to businesses too which is great news for businesses, although God knows how much that means the final bill to be paid will amount to and whether they have under predicted the true cost to tax payer.

  15. Should be fun trying to get in touch with the energy companies to come of a fix 🙄

Will wait until I've seen the unit figures to double check the variable rate is lower than my fix but I imagine it will be.

When would you say it’s okay for kids to get their own phone?

We got ours one for her 9th birthday We wanted to get her something to listen to music on play games etc. It was a lot cheaper to get an OK android phone than an ipod and couldn't really see much else.

She started middle school last year (year 5) a month after she turned 9 and has been good for her to keep on touch with friends and play games together etc. Although we do have to control how much she is on it as it would be too much if we didn't.

She would definitely need it this year though. She was in after school club previously but we've decided to let her walk home. Until now I've only occasionally put credit on but will have to put her on some plan now though.

I don't think she has a friend without one though so even if we hadn't got it we would be under pressure to do so.

Unfortunately my wife's not keen on any dogs listed with separation anxiety which Patty has. A few of my family have rehomed dogs suffering from this and it's caused too much difficulty. As my wife's not grown up with dogs she doubts me when I say you can work on this.

I had a quick scan through the bio but missed that sorry.

I'd just repeat what I said about checking whenever you can.

Birmingham dogs home, I had the most communication with for dogs and we got ours from

Blue Cross had the least come up and don't think I applied for one with them.

Dogs trust had a few but felt the they got a lot of applications. Getting in early helps but they do evaluate applications too. So it's like applying for a job and selling yourself to them.

RSPCA actually had a few litters of puppies when we were searching but we ideally didn't want a puppy.

Edit. Just looked at that Lurcher and whilst it says young kids (u13) when you open it up it then says only aged 8 years plus which we don't meet. This is the main issue I've had.

Yeah that's Diesel, Patty says all children under 13. She is down as a large dog though and there is no picture at the moment.

It is hardwork to look and can see why people just go the puppy route. My wife used to work for Blue Cross so we were only ever rehoming a dog and she wouldn't consider one from abroad either.

The first one we arranged to see, it got a bit possessive with a toy so they rang to cancel and changed the age. The next we said we'd take and paid reserving fee. On between picking her up apparently a previous owner tried to claim her and said that it had snapped at a child. Which I think they said to scupper rehoming and centre had no choice but to cancel. They did put us on a priority list though. So the next dog that came up they contacted us and we went to see her and ended up taking her home a few days later.

I've looked into (and even volunteered with some of) these sites and as a rule was seeing almost no dogs for home with kids under 8.

My wife is also not keen on staffies so that removes a lot of the dogs straight away. She's also concerned about behavioural problems they might have due to past trauma and how this might manifest in regards to our son who has to come first. As such she's not keen on getting an older dog.

I've looked at literally 100s and 100s of dogs, have sent multiple enquiries but so far it's not looking like a good option.

Ours were 3 & 8 at the time. As I said it was a lot of searching, not many came up and some of those weren't for us. Then of the ones we applied for sometimes we didn't hear back, occasionally there was some communication.

Any centre I registered with, I never heard back from. It was the obsessive searching to get in there first that got our success.

Just looked on Birmingham dogs home where we got ours.

    https://birminghamdogshome.org.uk/dog-search-results/?jsf=jet-engine&tax=size:25%2C26%2C27;can-live-with-young-children:89

There is one Lurcher available and another that has been reserved both 8 month old for all age children, one was for over 8's. Lurchers did come up more than most and we didn't want one.

Guess you do anyway but make sure you put about volunteering if you apply for any.

I've looked at 100s of dogs at a number of rescue centres but none in this country will deal with us as we have a young child and they see it as too much of a risk.

I've spoken to some overseas and they might but that's raised other queries.

    How old is your child?

We got ours from Birmingham dogs home May last year. Them, Blue Cross, Dogs trust, RSPCA will have dogs for young children as will others. Although if it's anything like when we were looking, you have to be frequently searching, to get in there first when one comes up as there arent many. I had all searches saved and was on my phone a lot going through the sites. An unhealthy amount of time, but had to do it to stand a chance.

We were also pretty open to what dog we wanted. We didn't want anything too small or like a Lurcher/greyhound. Some big dogs I think are an automatic no for young children.

What are you looking to get ideally?

  21. 4 hours ago, Genie said:

I did wonder this a little while ago, will people who took the plunge and fixed be able to access the new cap price? Or will they be punished for being proactive?

Ideally this government will state that nobody pays over x amount, regardless of contract… but then, it’s this government.

I went with the British Gas fix in June/Jul. While there were exit fees for a different supplier it is possible to move to another British gas tariff without charge. So I'm presuming you can change to the standard variable. Although I didn't look further into it. So hopefully if it turns out to not be a good move on the fix I can move back to variable and the only damage will be the 3 months paying the currently higher than variable fix.

Who knows whether it will go like that, if that ends up being the situation.
