Have you seen those other football teams much better than us who bring subs on who aren't rubbish? When they get injuries they put those players in too. It's a good idea.

Obviously but at the same time I have also seen those teams that have superior first 11's, its a good idea to go down that route too.

If you have Konsa, McGinn and Targett on the bench you would know we have signed a good quality player to take their spots.

Ndombele maybe, but we've got zero chance of attracting Alli. He is being mooted in a potential swap deal with Royal Madrid for Bale.

I can't even imagine the price they would ask for him, brought for 58 million and played him for 16 games when you total his minutes and divide by 90....

Will this ultimately be the preferred XI?

Yes but will that midfield two be good enough defensively? What happens with an injury to one of the centre backs, Luiz or Targett...

it’s suddenly much weaker especially central defence

I honestly dont think we can expect to sign Cash, Watkins, one/two wingers, cm a gk and then another defender. Both in terms of FFP and also I don't think it's a good idea to radically change the team again. Even with Martinez and a winger on top of the two so far we'll probs break 100m. We can't expect to build a complete squad in a couple of seasons.

    Yea I agree that’s around 100 million.

i personally don’t think we can expect as in an entitlement that our owners will keep putting in huge amounts of money year on year for transfers.

Having said that to buy the club, sort the debt, sell the stadium to themselves, spend 140 million on transfers last year and probably at least 100 million this year I don’t think there is any current indication that they won’t continue which is fantastic for us as a club as we will continue to rise and solidify our position for a the time when they decide to sell or stop funding it the way they have thus far.

If we assume the goalkeeper and two wide forwards are being signed soon, we are missing a defensive midfielder, centre back and left back. Whether we sort that this summer or next who knows but those are the next priorities to as you say have a full squad of premier league quality players to reassess from that point where we are and what needs to be done to move forward.

I would like to see the dead wood being moved as well.

  5. This signing is annoying me to be honest, it’s clear he isn’t that interested in joining or he would have done ages ago.

I’ll be pissed off if Benrahma is sold before we sign Rashica as we should turn to him if this doesn’t look pretty sure he is signing.

I hate it when other people can’t form a view of a player we’re linked with or sign saying ‘we’ll have to wait and see him play in a Villa shirt’ but that’s exactly where I am with Traore.

I can see both sides of the argument. At £17.5m he could be a bit of a bargain given that Just over a year ago he was rumoured to be going to Liverpool, only for Lyon to be asking £40m for him.

The one thing that is absolutely clear is even if he is predictable with only a left peg, he is very quick, experienced, aggressive and does have goals in his locker. Also he’s lived and played in the UK before. All that is exactly what we need. If we were signing Ismaili Sarr from Watford the blog would be in a bigger meltdown than it is over Rashica.......but Sarr and Bertrand are very similar types of players imo.

So I’m all for the signing. He’s been at Lyon for three years, had two great seasons (when he was worth £40m) only for Rudi Garcia to come in last summer and not rate him. That happens all the time in football so, as I say, £17.5m could well be a bargain.

If money were no object I would have Sarr as our get table wide forward for the right side.

At the end of the day we don’t get to pick the players we try and sign, at least he is the right type of wide forward we need unlike the rumours for Josh King!

I will be behind him if he signs, same as I would be with almost every other signing!

Indeed, I wouldn’t have picked him to be our right wide forward but his stats are good, he has a lot going for him and he might do very well.

We have to support any signing our club makes.

  8. He should go out on loan this season to a championship club.

If he does the business then we can reassess where he fits in our squad but if he doesn’t manage say 15 goals then put him up for sale as he will never make it with us.

So the best since Larsson? That may or may not be true (and if he ends up coming here I will certainly hope so) but the list of SPL top scorers in the 7 or 8 years before Edouard doesn’t indicate there is much competition for that title:

Kenny Miller, Gary Hooper, Michael Higdon, Kris Commons, Adam Rooney, Liam Boyce, Leigh Griffiths, Alfredo Morales

Yes the best since him. I simply said he was the best in that time he simply isn't comparable to the regular quality of the SPL, anyone who has seen him play just once can see this.

I’m gonna show these to my mum and ask her if she still thinks I ought to always respect other people’s opinions?

This whole Edouard love in reminds me of the time every man and his dog on this forum were begging for us to sign Alfonso Alves because he was smashing goals in at a rate of 1 per game in some Mickey Mouse league.

Boro bought him for a club record £13 odd million and he was utter garbage.

Anyone willing to splash £40m on a player from the SPL over a player that scores 15 in 34 in the premier league, and 3 in 8 in the champions league (in my humble opinion) needs their head examined.

There have been plenty of players to come out of Scotland recently who have been of a very high standard, Eduoard is the best forward to have played in the SPL for about 20 years

Tammy or Edouard, if you had a choice at £40m

Eduoard for sure but now Watkins is here I’d spend the 40m elsewhere anyway.

No point having great strikers up front if you let too many in the other end or don’t create enough for them

I’m intrigued to see how bad this player really is. Can’t remember the last time fans were so against a signing.

Everyone still thinks he’s crap after the stats I posted 10 hours ago....

    It's not split that way.

Clubs can choose how to 'structure' the deal i.e. how much is due on what date (similar to a loan.) That's what holds a lot of transfers up. If we give Werder X amount right up front we have to declare that to FFP and Werder can show it as a net positive. But if we want to spread the payments out over time then Werder may demand a larger amount of money over that length of time. Time is money!

Hence why you often hear the structure of the deal is holding things up.

I’m not arguing about structures of deals affecting transfers, they do that for all sorts of reasons, not least cash flow.

I was just looking for a definitive answer on FFP only.

  14. 1 hour ago, TheAuthority said:

It very much does if you structure your payments over a number of years.

FFP takes into account a rolling 3 year period, so if you pay Werder 1 million a year for 4 years, then 14 million in year 5 it has a huge effect on both clubs accounts. I don't know if the figure is available but the amount of money sloshing about between clubs that owe each other all over the world is probably in the billions.

My understanding is that the full amount that is guaranteed on his transfer plus the total guaranteed value of his contract is amortised into a yearly figure?
