He is now challenging the Status Quo.....This team has had a lethargy about if for some time, and it needs challenging.

Any Manager coming in, would eventually have the same dilemma.

The soft under belly in this team has been around for some time now.....and it has to be addressed.

I am not saying SG is right about everything far from it, but he does need support in trying to bring about a change in attitude, which won't be easy.....how many times, have we witnessed sloppy play, capitulations, failure to beat teams we should be beating.....this has been bumping along under more that one manager.....it has to be met head on, for it to change.

Folk cite coaching as the problem, it may well be, but there is also more to it than that IMO......something is more deep rooted.

He has come in Mid season, with a brief to ensure, Premier League Status, with 19 defeats, the season was pants.....but stability was key.

He now has to start as he means to go on and maybe " shit or bust" maybe the order of the day is tackle the issues or go( The attitude of this team is taking us nowhere)......They have to back him to sort it out or sack him...but if they take the later, the problems will still be there, for the next man to face.....this has been a similar issue at Old Trafford.

It takes balls, more than money , to fix it.

Sage words. I hadn't thought about the long standing, underlying malaise this club has endured for more than a decade. I did call for him to go but I think you may have a point. Question is, how long do we give him?

Let's be realistic, IF we lose VS Everton and contuine to lose our next 4 games( highly possible as they are all tough!) the board are going to have a very tough decision to make! Purslow won't sack his mate. But has said the club want to finish top 7!

Would the owners veto Perslow if things looked dire?!

I like a lot of the things Purslow talks about but I hope and believe our owners wont let a bad situation fester too long. They want and I guess are demanding top level achievements. The 5 year plan for Euro football is getting ever closer. For me. SG has not shown any idea how to manage at this level. Get shot now!

  3. Not sure if anyone has picked this up, but odds on SG being 1st PL Manager to lose his job were 14/1 yesterday( had a sneaky £10 on it, rude not to) today around 9/2

so I wasn't the only one

Problem is Gerrard management or lack of it is worse than his coaching

His man management is 30 years out of date from the Houllier approach to throwing people under the bus

Considering his recent comments, could he have already lost the dressing room? I normally advocate given new Managers time but in this case I think sack now and replace when the right fit becomes available. Gary Mac and Critchley should be able to continue without things getting even worse......hopefully!

  5. We are in for a proper relegation battle this year if SG retains this 433 with McGinn and PC. Unless we use a system suitable to our squad I fear the worst.

We might get lucky and NSWE sack him pronto and a proper coach comes in and fires up the players who all look very lethargic.

For now I would go with a home team of

                                           Martinez

    Cash             Chambers              Carlos           Digne

                                  Kamara        Luiz

    Bailey                             Buendia                      Courtinho

                                             Ings

    away team

                                        Martinez

    Cash            Carlos                   Mings                  Digne

                        McGinn       Kamara                  Luiz

    Bailey                              Watkins                  Buendia

He's cultured. He can pass. He can move. He can turn out of danger.

    But not a good lad.

    Next!

Cultured, can pass, move and turn out of danger. Definitely not a Villa player then

  7. Carlos will help the defence, Kamara looks like he will need time to settle. SG doesn't seem to have sorted out a workable system from midfield to forwards. At the moment I can only see 11th as a ceiling. first three games all crucial as next four all very tough.

bournmouth win  everton win  palace lose whu draw arsenal lose city lose lei lose southampton win leeds win forest draw chelsea lose

14 pts after 11 games puts us around 13th so not good enough. If this pans out SG comes under a lot of pressure from above in my view.

I hope I'm wrong but I feel this season is going to be just as frustrating as last.

Should be told either sign a new contract before the start of the season or you won't be near the 1st team.

I would then try and sell him for some money.

Pointless giving him minutes as all he will do is use it to get the move he wants, if indeed he wants to move.

All this I want playing time yet won't commit nonsense. Works both ways, commit and you are likely to get more playing time if you are good enough.

Accepting that none of us really know what is going on, and really wanting this kid to stay and grow with the Villa, I agree to your post. Sign and play a part or don't sign and be sold. I fear his head has been turned by the Bellingham affect with Dortmund.

I absolutely agree with you on this - our midfield imbalance is killing us - I think where I disagree is that the problem is primarily about the characteristics of the players.

I think they leave us short to a large extent because of the way they're being asked to play - when we have the ball, we're very often a 2-3-2-3 with the centrebacks holding, then Ramsey covering at right back, McGinn covering left back and Luiz in midfield - the two tens then occupy the middle of the park and look to play in the front three (Digne, Ings and Cash yesterday) either with balls into the corner or through balls.

That leaves our midfield line with two issues - firstly they're spread very wide across the pitch and secondly, neither Ramsey or McGinn are naturally full backs.

I think we need to find a way to narrow this group - to have them closer together in the middle of the park - that will bring us a lot more solidity and enable them to defend better and keep us solid.

Entirely correct. At the moment - we have forward minded midfielders who spend much of the game playing full back and a good passing midfielder having to cover about half of the pitch on his own. Doug isn't by nature a destroyer or a defender - I think that's fine to an extent as the system in theory suggests that the line of three are all there to protect the back four - it's a three where one has a dogged attitude, one has running power and one has excellent passing ability.

But then we play the system in a way that takes McGinn and Ramsey out of the midfield and leaves Luiz exposed - it's the evacuation of midfield that leaves the gaps.

We are a little bit unbalanced, yep with more attacking talent than defensive - the problem is that we seem to be setting up in a way that's almost exactly designed to expose that lack of balance in our midfield - players that might be able to defend, like Digne and Cash, spend much of their time up front and players that might be able to stiffen the midfield, like McGinn and Ramsey, spend much of their time at full back - meanwhile, we don't score because creative gems like Buendia and Coutinho are playing deeper than you'd like because there's a massive hole behind them where the midfield have gone to play fullback.

SG is making the job very, very tough for himself with his faith in this system - it might well be that it worked in Scotland because Rangers were simply a lot better than everyone else - but right now, we could do with our fullbacks pulling back thirty yards so that we can re-populate our midfield and free up our creative players.

For me, it doesn't matter who you pick in our current system if you're going to play them in roles they're not suited for. We have players that, if better arranged could perform better and bring us better results.

The manager needs to be brave enough to have a good look at what he's doing.

Perfect analysis which the vast majority on here can agree with. Lets hope SG is man enough to fix it

We will fluke a result here and there. I also think Norwich will win.

Worrying though isn't it. When I started the list I assumed there would be enough obvious wins or draws but given what we are currently like I don't think we have enough in the bag. We need improvements and probably a fluky win might help start the recovery.

Has anyone got a points target that they’d like to see met to give them some reassurance for next season? Obviously performances need to improve as well, but I would hope/assume with an upturn in results, performances would also have improved.

Fourteen games left. I have it in my head another 18 points would take us to 45 points total and not look too bad.

I think that’s a reasonable ask, something around 45 I’d be ok with. Not completely 100% convinced, but reassured enough. I think.

Given how abject our performances are currently and SG trying to get us playing his Xmas tree set up, which I believe puts the wrong players in the wrong places and leaves us way too open, here are the points we are likely to get without any change to system or improvements from players and Manager( wtf were those subs yesterday) for games still to play:

BHA away  0 pts  S'ton home 0 pts Leeds away 0pts  WHU away 0pts Arsenal home 1pt Wolves away 0pts Spurs home 1pt L'pool home 0pts

Leicester away 1 pt Norwich home 3pts.  total 6 meas we will probably get relegated.

The substitution decisions against Watford were genuinely some of the worst I've ever seen. Like it was batshit crazy, no logic whatsoever.

Taking off our deepest midfielder in Luiz for **** Ollie Watkins to then roll a midfield 3 of Ramsey - McGinn - Buendia or whatever it was. I've seen plenty of bad decisions but that's easily right up there with the worst, Gerrard completely lost his mind in that moment.

    Nailed it.

This is part of the problem. Mings is having to to much to do and some of it leads to mistakes which he then gets the criticism for. Konsa is struggling this season but seems to get a free pass. They are both decent defenders but something isn’t right at the moment.

You're spot on. As many will agree, the lack of a DM to slow down opponent attacks means CB's are working too hard and too often resulting in mistakes. A solid DM would help them set better and earlier. Roll on Summer window.

This is not true at all in the case of covid19. My vague understanding is that the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) do no contain anything of the sort, they act more like a messenger service. The AZ vaccine contains genes from the surface of a spike protein taken from a chimp virus which is then modified to elicit the same immune response, rather than de-activated variant of the virus itself.

Absolutely right DDID the mRNA enters cels and tells them to create antigens.

I thought from watching Buendia for Norwich and Walsall game as much as confirmed it he won't play in front 3 of 433 4231. He'll have free role behind front 3 of 433 as an 8. Look at his positioning for both assists. One of his biggest strengths is tackling besides his vision and creativity

With Ings signing and Watkins having played a lot LW with Smith at Brentford can see Watkins Ings Bailey(Traore)

Watkins job will still be to get in behind the defenders and he ran at them last season on the left a lot anyway. Watkins and Ings great on the press. Bailey and Traore both questionable defence off the ball but waiting in the wings behind can be Buendia in the free role. Add McGinn in the middle 3 with another be it Sanson, Luiz or a 6 like Nakamba or another 6 or 8 of we make that rumoured CM signing.

I think that's a hell of a team. Ings will probably play 60-70 mins for preservation and Watkins can slot in up front as per usual

    Bang on I reckon

If El Ghazi is anywhere near the starting 11 this season, we have made a huge error in the transfer market.

starting no, but he may get himself fired up to challenge Bailey rather than being kept out by Jack and only getting a look in when Jack was out injured.

This is crazy. I have now seen many mentioning that AEG needs to go, be sold for,as low as 10m£  A player that scores double figured last season and a player who could have had more assists if our attackers had been more lethal in front of goal. Now we have Ings and people wants him to leave? 🤔🤨

Said the same yesterday. Who knows he might fancy his chances now Jack has gone.

  18. There should be no way Anwar leaves for less than £40m. He scored 12 goals last season, only just behind Ollie and currently we now no longer have a right footed left side winger. Even if Bailey plays there sometimes it would be brilliant to have the option of Anwar
