Just thinking of our general shoot out record. Am I right in thinking the only serious shoot out we've lost in last 30 years was 1999 against West Ham? And that match got replayed in the end because they put on an ineligible player.

We've had the shoot out wins v Tranmere, Inter Milan, Bolton, Sunderland and West Brom before last night so a very good record indeed compared to most clubs.

Think it's due to the keepers we had at the time being great presences for those occasions. Bosnich, James had that Emi type presence facing penalties and Guzan and Steer also did well in the more recent ones. Also usually have a core of experienced penalty takers which helps aswell.

    I can’t remember this !!

Bad Bailey was much worse than Bad Moussa. So far.

Bad Bailey was never that bad in my opinion. Just became a scapegoat for some reason.

He struggled in a team that was struggling. Diaby is struggling in team that is 4th.

  3. I’m not doubting the guys ability for a second. Just would like to see him try to beat a man and get a cross or shot off more often. Seems reluctant to try.

Bailey even when he was apparently shit kept trying.

Its why I think it’s more a confidence thing than anything else.

I'm okay with Olsen at home against Olympiakos. Not great, but, better than having him start in that environment. It's my hope that the fans who can attend that game saw the Lille match and step up their enthusiasm to lift the team.

Watching Olympiakos, I believe they don't present the same kind of threat as Lille so defense needs to step up to fill the giant Emi-shaped gap.

Then he comes back for the match in Greece and just bestrides their world like a Colossus.

(I know that's Roman, not Greek, I'm an American from the dumb southern part of the country and I'm quoting Shakespeare, grade me on a curve please)

It’s a football forum mate, trust me you would have got away with it 😉

I’m pissed off he’s suspended for the 1st leg. The ref was an idiot and now he can’t play because he asked for a ball?

There has to be some way to remonstrate

Nah he got the second yellow for gesturing a calm down straight after the ref told him not to engage with fans.  The time wasting yellow was stupid though.

At this moment sounded like even Lucy Ward was criticical of the commentator herself

Watching that again the ref booked him but knew the rules so explained to Dougie he’s not sent off.  Fair play he knew that rule. If only he knew that every time a crowd boos you don’t have to give a yellow card.

    Lucky feckers!

Unlucky more like. Just look at how many Premier League games they have to play in a very short space of time not to mention the teams they play.  I’ve said it before but if they get top 4 after that then hats off to them. They deserve it.

  8. I always felt he had this in him which is why I defended him so much and got annoyed with fans turning him.

Im not feeling that vibe as much from Diaby because I haven’t seen him try to beat players the way Bailey always did even when he was struggling.  That’s why I think the comparisons are a bit different.

Hopefully Diaby can add that to his game too.

He is a fiery bloke. But when it comes to penalites he seems like he is the calmest player on the pitch.  Deep breaths, total concentration. Totally still. No outside influences. He is as good as Martinez in those moments. I wonder if he uses a psychologist for his penalites as he waits for so long after the whistle goes.

I reckon all those hours playing COD paid off!

  10. He has a lot of ability so hopefully comes good but he’s definitely struggling for consistency at the moment.  The price tag can’t be helping.

Can't believe coefficient FC are outside the CL places. After all the money they've spent.

I don’t think it would have happened for the last 6-7 or years ! Sod’s Law.

Right let’s deal with Bournemouth now.

The stupid thing is both yellow cards tonight were total BS. Honestly that referee should be removed from Conference League fixtures because it didn't even seem like he understood the rules.

15 bookings tonight if you include the managers. Wasn’t even a dirty game.

  13. I loved the way he tried his shithousery after our first penalty and then quickly dropped the ball when remembered he on a yellow.

I don’t think anybody in the ground seemed to know the yellow card rule including Emi. I know I didn’t.

Is he now suspended for the semi first leg? He technically got two yellows so should it be a one match ban?

Nah they all get wiped. I never knew that rule though. I guess you can’t make subs during penalties so it makes sense.

I thought the yellow was a tad harsh as the crowd got him that card

Lille keeper had the ball longer at one stage in 2nd half

Card was a joke. Referee was lost out there. He held the ball for long periods but it was at his feet !

Having lived through so much pain for Villa wanting CL so much and making it do or die was stressing me out to no end. Being defeatist is a way of avoiding the pain of failure.

But what is failure? I think we are now a top 8 side and we can compete for trophies and CL places and win any football game against any side. If we end 7th one season and 5th and get CL another as long as we can be sustainable and compete isn't that success?

So by that metric this season is a success a resounding one. Nothing that can happen over the final games of the season can really change that

Once I look at it from that perspective life isn't as stressful and every game doesn't bring agonising levels of nerves and stress.

Glad you’ve found peace.  Also remember it’s only a game.
