  1. Has he not been basically scoring at a 1 in 2 rate whatever level/side he's been playing at for going on 2 years now? Deserves a chance with our first team and probably has more to gain from us potentially sneaking into Europe this year than anyone else at the club

I will say as someone who has never been to Birmingham, much less Villa Park, I do bristle just a bit on how that inherently limits a fan and/or podcaster's insight. I would say, I don't think it matters *at all*. What matters, to me: is the content insightful? educational? entertaining? I'm sure there are lots of fans who have attended tons of games at VP who, for a multitude of reasons, would very much *not* be worth hearing from.

If that is just a matter of personal taste, okay.

Anyone's choice of which media to consume is a matter of personal taste, ultimately. For the match going fan, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that they look for all of the above but prefer that to be delivered by someone who was physically at the game, so they can also discuss the atmosphere, away fans, match day experience, transport issues, half-time queue for a balti pie etc., as ultimately that is going to be more relatable. I just think it's a bit of a jump to suggest anyone with that opinion is being xenophobic.

FWIW I think 95% of fan vlogs/podcasts are cringe-inducing shite, this one included

    Hmm...

I find that hard to take any other way than: "You've never been here, so you don't get it".

Which irks, since I've never been to Villa Park - and, likely, I never will. Something I share in common with a LOT of posters here.

He personally finds it difficult to take to the podcast. It doesn't then follow that he believes all non-UK based Villa fans should sit down, be quiet and avoid having any opinion on the club or football in general - if he did, he'd be really unlikely to be posting on VT.

A matter of personal taste doesn't equate xenophobia. As I said in my initial post, I can understand the frustration with the point being expressed, but I also don't think the opinion expressed by the initial poster is an unreasonable or hateful one either. I can see both sides basically.

I reckon they could buy everything between Villa Park and the railway line for £100m (paying above market price for much of it) and make something really special of the whole area.

That said, for further expansion of Villa Park, they would only really need one side of Holte Road, which would have a market value of £10-15m. Or both sides of it for max £30m (being very generous). That's the whole street for the cost of one Leon Bailey!

Do we envision that the redevelopment would move quicker than Bailey as well? 😉

What was implied is that the podcaster doesn't know what he's talking about because he isn't a regular at Villa Park and only "real fans" should have a podcast.  A good portion of the active users on Villa Talk are not from the UK and it's extremely insulting to those of us who also religiously follow this club.  You may as well tell the rest of us that our voices/opinions don't matter because we live somewhere outside of the UK.

Like I said, I don't care if you listen to his podcast or not, but saying you don't listen to it only because he's just gone to his first match makes you look like a xenophobic knob.

I'm really not sure that is how the original poster intended his comments to come across at all

Well if Villa want to progress they are going to have to become more global. Villa always had a following outside the UK, from Ireland to North America, Australia, Africa.

I am afraid that a more inward looking Villa only leads to stagnation and decline.

Missing the point just a bit - yes of course we have and yes we will, but that doesn't mean anyone has to like the globalisation of football overall, and has little to do with people choosing not to listen to a podcast by a guy who has just attended his first game

This kind of "holier than thou" supporter gatekeeping really annoys me.  This is almost worse than people on here saying they can't watch Pete's videos because his accent "makes it hard to take him seriously".  Football is a global sport now and from what I hear, it's a lot easier to watch the Premier League on TV outside of the UK than it is inside it.  If you don't like Villa growing into a global brand, too bad.  It's 2023 and the club will only continue to grow around the world with Emery/NSWE in charge of the club.

If his podcast isn't your thing, fine. No need to insult other Villa supporters because they weren't born/raised/live in Birmingham.

I understand your frustration, but I don't think it's necessarily gatekeeping or comes from a place of nastiness. Football podcasts rely on the listeners accepting the presenters as experts worth listening to - that will always be hard for those of us who attend regularly when considering someone who has just attended their first game.

Football is a global sport, but the globalisation of English football is not universally seen as a good thing, and that's a fully legitimate position IMO

  8. Looking at the Leicester forum, they seem to be much warmer to his appointment than Norwich fans were. Probably helps him that he's replacing a manager who had become very unpopular and who most had wanted sacked for a long time. Wish him all the best and think he could be onto a good thing here in terms of repairing his reputation at the top level

Its probably on a par with Erdington High Street these days, and I expect that eventually the retail will be replaced by housing, which has seen Birmingham Road become increasingly urbanised, as the houses have been replaced with flats.

Sutton town centre is dying, but it's nothing akin to what has happened to Erdington high street over the past 15 or so years

It might be because my wife is from the west country. They do like their rhotic final 'R's. Even when they aren't there. In 'Doc Martin', the character Louisa is often referred to as 'Lou-eez-urrr' by the Cornish locals.

Think you've hit the nail on the head tbh. When I was doing my PGCE, a lass from the west country commented how weird it was that us Brummies would pronounce 'mentor' as if it was spelt 'menta', whereas she would emphasise the R at the end of the word

Trump: 'America is going to hell'.

Yes mate, it all started in 2016.

Started a long time before that if were being honest. Trump is more symptom than cause IMO

    For the record:

    never liked the Smiths

    have read War and Peace

    Have read Crime and Punishment

Quite like the Stone Roses, got both albums and some singles

I've never liked The Smiths, have read Crime and Punishment, not read War and Peace. Never pretended to like The Smiths or to have read War and Peace

  13. The Smiths are one of those bands that I'm convinced a good chunk of people who follow them are just pretending to like them for clout. A bit like when people claim to have read books like War and Peace or Crime and Punishment.

Never particularly got into the Stone Roses either tbh

Represents the club so we'll, even just watching him lead England u21s out and talking to mascot who is young blind girl, just gives you the impression that he is pure class on and off the pitch

Friend of mine (who happens to be a nose) knows his dad through boxing and said to me ages ago that JJ and his brothers have been brought up properly. If he can keep developing and maintains a first team place with us then I can see him captaining the team at some point

Sherwood and Gerrard have at least one thing in common, they are both shit managers.... Rangers won a league when Celtic were at their lowest, big deal. Beale probably won it on his own, Gerrard took the press conferences.

Credit to Sherwood for never applying for another job after the Swindon debacle.

St Johnstone won more trophies than Rangers during Gerrard's time in Scotland 😁
