If he needed one maybe, but he's still been one of our best players. This Grealish bashing it the weirdest and most ambarassing theme I've ever seen on here.  People seem desperate for him to fail.

It was a joke. I am bashing no one. Just feel the players got tired in both matches, and fresh legs earlier would have been welcome. If it means substituting Grealish, because he has an off day, then so be it.

Could work if he's showing signs of complacency or poor attitude, but as far as I can see that isn't the problem. He just needs to sit down and analyse his performances with the coaches, and go again next week.

I am not saying he is playing bad, but when the players tire with 10-15 minutes still to play,  Smith needs to freshen things up at an earlier stage. 1 unused substitute when Hourihane was on the bench, is a bit of a waste. Hourihane is a big goal threat on his own. Whom Smith should have sacrificed, is up to him.

TBH, as far as Benteke was concerned as soon as he put in a transfer request after his first season  he destroyed any chance he'd have had of my holding him in any regard.

Juxtapose :lol:Benteke and Carew. Which one was there going wild celebrating our Wembley triumph and which one probably didn't even watch it?

Carew liked the club and enjoyed the ride. Benteke used the club as a vehicle for Benteke to drive to new destinations.

When Tammy is celebrating our Champions League win I'll group him with Big John.

I hope none of our current players celebrate publicly when their previous club, where they played 3 years, wins promotion 4 years later.

How is it criticizing for the sake of it? Do you think McCormack, Hogan or Lansbury were brought in with a system and gameplan in mind? or Veretout or Gueye or Gestede

Was a critic of the clubs policy in last 5 years

This went from criticizing Bruce over Hogan, to criticize the club, in general. This is a Hogan thread, btw, and the guy that brought him in brought in successful players as well. Hogan has nice finishing skills, and I hope he is successful in his career.

clutching at straws for who? was signings by different managers

Criticizing for the sake of it. Different managers also signed Kodija, Abraham, McGinn, EL Ghazi, Jedinak, Chester, Terry, Snodgrass, etc

my point was that these players were signed with no actual plan for these players or system to play them

Clutching at straws. You know some signings were great for the situation at the club, some were okay, others did not work out. Just like Guardialo's purchases of expensive defenders. And every manager out there.

Hogan sums up the scattergun approach of recent seasons similar to signing McCormack and Lansbury and even Hourihane. Signed for big money because the stats looked good and nobody had probably even watched him

McCormack did great over several seasons until he was signed, Lansbury injured a lot, Hourihane rose to the challenge.

I have to say though, if Suso and Dean were to meet with Sturridge and they like him, then sure why not. There's no doubting his ability on the pitch. It's a gamble, but we have left ourselves short so a short term deal might do the trick.

Sometimes they work (Berger) sometimes they don't (Pires)

I didn't feel Berger worked... but Merson!!!

Spurs started the game with their record £63m signing, we started with our £22m record signing. They brought on Eriksen rumoured at a value of £70m, we brought on Jota £4m. You can only work with what you’ve got.

I am not arguing about prices, but I expect the players to know their roles, to be able to control the ball for more than 2 seconds and to fight for the ball. Jota was wasted on the wing yesterday, but Villa still persisted with not moving him centrally. When you are parking the bus, you can't keep a formation that's not working :)

And we would still have lost most likely.  The only thing I'd have done in hindsight would have Guilbert on the bench to bring on for Trezeguet, rather than Jota.  I thought Dean got the rest just about right, including the choice of full backs which most of us were shitting ourselves over when we saw the teamsheet.

Maybe so...but none of the substitutions worked out. Tottenham changed tactics, while Villa never countered those.

  11. Well, Dean Smith's second half tactics weren't good enough. You can say he lacks PL experience. It's a bit about the substitutions, the formation and the bench. The midfield was overrun, all of the second half. Maybe Villa should have played more narrow. Maybe the bench should consist of more versatile players, maybe both Luiz and Lansbury should have come on earlier to help out and play Grealish further up. I don't know, but Smith should try to make use of a variation of formations and game plans as the game progress.
