We also had some decent chances and he seemed to have set us up with an actual plan that matched the players we have available, many of which are massively limited. We had a threat though.

Did we really? I saw nothing in the Sky highlights to suggest we had any clear-cut chances that where a result of some 'sublime play'.

First of all I am delighted by the win, it's been a while but really pleasing.

however I am amazed at how one penalty two minutes before the end of a match has basically changed everything for so many people.

before and during the match right up to the penalty the selection was criticised , individual player performances were criticised. But that one penalty and everything seems ok now. The selection wasn't a problem , Gardner and bacuna are suddenly better players ,what went before the penalty seems to have been forgotten . Being critical of the original team selection is frowned upon, being critical of the actual performance for 99.9% of the game is shunned .

such is the miraculous healing power of one penalty two minutes before the end of the match . I guess we were all that desperate for a win

This (and I don't say it lightly, because it's not often I'd agree with Richard).

The performance as a whole didn't seem all that great, and the team selection was bizarre at best. To me we seemed really lucky to nick the win. Granted I've only read the commentary, and seen the Sky highlights, and not actually seen the game.

I'm not looking to be doom monger either, or posting to stir up a reaction. I'm still genuinely worried for our future. That may of course change in the coming weeks/months, and I sincerely hope it does. But it's gonna take a lot more than a lucky late winner. I have no doubt that SB will be able to change the fragile mentality and instill some much needed grit and determination to the team. That takes us only halfway. At the end of the day, we desperately need a style of play, one that plays to the strengths of the current crop, without forgetting future progression.

Also, I've got absolutely nothing against Steve Bruce as a person, he has a humble, quiet way about him, which I really like. I've just never rated him all that much as a manager

We've had 6 shots with 3 on target. I am sure it's probably down to the terrible line up and just Bruce being lucky though.

Yep, with possession barely over 20%. And that goal was not lucky at all. Let's wait until full-time before we start another Bruce wankfest, shall we?

I must confess, I am very surprised in his performances to date and I was all for a player like this coming in.

However, I remember my surprise at Ken McNaught and after c20 games.....The rest is history.

This is the thing really. We've all seen what he can and did do for Palace. He hasn't turned to absolute garbage during the summer. He needs to perform better, but the problem lies elsewhere...

But how and why? We have had various systems: manager responsible, committee responsible,  manager and ceo .  we have tried various methods and it isnt rocket science especially when other teams manage to do it so why?

Exactly, and I'd add that recent signings are certainly good enough. We need a manager to instill some belief, commitment and goddam professionalism into them. Also a style of play, that these overpaid primadonna's can understand, would help.

I wouldn't be against just pumping balls into gestede (was my tHought before the season and it hasn't changed). Drop kodjia. Don't think he compliments mccormack like gestede would. The midfielders are clueless so just keep it simple

    Gollini

    Richards (gulp)

    Baker

    Chester

    Cissokho  (gulp)

    Bacuna

    Lyden

    Tshibola

    Amavi

    Mccormack

    Gestede

Awful I know but has balance and could work to a simple plan.

Sell ayew in January and use the inflated ridiculous price we'd probably get to buy 2 decent cms.

That line-up, don't know whether to laugh or cry.

We didn't. Was more kick and rush drivel.

Which is to be expected, given we change managers as often as I change my knickers. Sadly I don't think SB is going to be able to turn this around.

    Are you RDM ?

No, sadly I still have my shitty job.

I agree though that both Gresford and Ayew could play the same position. They are however quite different in their style of play, wouldn't you agree?

I wouldn't say he was a bargain, but don't think he was a waste of money either.

  9. Well why not give him until the summer while you're at it?

I get your point, everyone needs time to make their mark. Fair enough. But all those that joined in on the Steve Bruce 'wankfest' suggested he'll not need time, and that we'll still be able to fight for promotion. I think we can all now agree, this is highly unlikely, almost impossible.

Ffs I wasn't a fan of Bruce's appointment but it's far from ridiculous to reserve final judgement until he has had a chance to bring his own players in!

I honestly believe a proper experienced manager wouldn't greatly need to improve this squad. McCormack, Kodjia, Adomah, Grealish, are comparable to Barcelona's strike force at this level.

  11. It's ridiculous to suggest we'd have to wait until the January transfer window before we're allowed to fully judge SB. Everyone in favor of the appointment seemed fairly certain he'd be able to make an instant impact. He can't be held accountable for yesterday obviously, given he's had no time with the squad yet, but surely we can expect a proper impact in the coming weeks? Otherwise we might as well stuck with RDM.

Also I refuse to accept we don't have enough quality. Our summer dealings where decent enough, best we've seen in years imho, even though we seem a little light in midfield. Jedinak obviously needs to up his game, and I fully expect him to do so, and Tish needs to stay free from any more injuries. I don't rate Gardner or Westy all that much, but expect them to at least be able to compete on this level.

Sadly the mental side seems to be our biggest issue atm, as many have pointed out, and if SB can't sort this bit out instantly, he really doesn't cut the mustard, short term or otherwise.
