  1. I also watched 500 Days of Summer recently and enjoyed it. Very good film.

Agreed - saw it on Friday and thoroughly enjoyed it too. Totally bugged me trying to work out where I'd seen the male lead before then I realised he was Tommy in 3rd Rock.

  2. I think Ryan Gosling is such a versatile actor.

Can't think of anything I've seen him in that I didn't enjoy. :thumb:

He was due to play the Mark Walberg role in the Lovely Bones, but pulled out.

More evidence to back up the notion that only picks good roles ;)

  3. Saw this last night for the first time. Filmically it's not the best but still a fairly compelling story of a Jewish kid who rails against his upbringing by becoming a neo-nazi.

  4. Huge difference between any "handbag" camera and an SLR. Before you've even seen any results............no shutter lag, after that because of the sizes of the sensors, images will be much better and the improvement in Lens quality as the little fella says even the kit lenses will be a huge improvement. A camera with one do all lens can never be as good as an interchangeable lens system

    18-105

the D90 is a very good starter SLR, don't think you need to go much higher than that for a while, it'll be years before you outgrow it.

Its in amazon with a decent (not great but ok) Vibration Reduction zoom 18-105 mm lens for £750 plus £60 quid cashback from Nikon before April!

Cheers Bicks (and Damien). Will post the results once I get the new kit. :)

  5. Another request for advice, if I may.

I've had a DMC-FZ10 for the last 6 or 7 years and have managed to take a couple of good shots (some Here) with it but am thinking about upgrading to something a bit more flexible.

I was looking at some D90's the other day and was wondering if I was spending enough money to see significant difference. Looks like the body is about £800 and obviously I'd need to buy lenses too but I guess my question is, should I keep saving for a bit longer and get something over the grand mark or should £800 get me a decent enough shell to keep me going?

(I know there's a million and one questions that would probably need answering to give a fully-informed opinion - just an indication would be good ;))

  6. Adding another +1 for Slacker which I finally watched last night. Was kind of taken aback to see one of the shots go right past an ex-girlfriends house though!

    My current to-do list includes:

    Memories of Underdevelopment

    Under the Bombs

The Man in the Glass Booth

    The Iceman Cometh

    The Believer

    Synecdoche, New York

    The Newton Boys

Any suggestions on where to start?

  7. I'm a proud new owner of an iPod nano. I've yet to get into podcasts but I would like to find a good soccer one.

It's down to personal taste - the two most popular seem to be the Times and Guardian ones. With the Times one you have to put up with the oft sneering Marcotti and with the Guardian you have to accept it's very populist and therefore focusses on either the big 4 in England or the top teams in Spain/Italy. Sure there are plenty others out there though.

    Do you pay for podcasts?

Generally not although iTunes does put some podcasts into the audiobook category at which point you're going to have to pay (See Gervais podcasts).

Do you have to have an iTunes account?
If you're d/l'ing from iTunes, yes although there are myriad other ways to fill up your podcast catalogue (torrents/fileshares/go to source).

Does an iTunes account cost anything if you don't buy songs?
Nope - you pay for what you d/l
  8. Am loving the sound of The King from the synopsis. Have added it to my amazon wishlist (currently running at 140 dvd's) and will probably add it to my next order once I've got through the 12 films I already have piled up ready to watch.

  9. ^^Watched that a couple of weeks ago. Within 5 minutes I knew I was going to hate it. 20 Minutes later, I loved it. Exactly the same happened with In Search of a Midnight Kiss which I think I mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread.

  10. Couldn't agree more, Briggaman - two very different films (pictured) but both excellent.

Haven't seen Edge of Darkness though and I can't imagine doing so any time soon (not a Gibson fan).

  11. Frank Skinner has one for his Radio Show, which is ok, if you can block out the two cretins that present it with him.

Any more suggesitions other than the above, patricularly news/technology/science podcasts?

    Thanks

Really enjoyed this for the first few weeks but as you say, the two co-presenters are cringe-worthy and the woman in the background (presumably the producer) who cackles with laughter every time Skinner says anything is supremely annoying.

Used to love Frank in the good old days but he just doesn't seem on the money in this show. Seems to be mostly jokes that are trying to be clever (constant A.E. Housman references) or really poor "Dad-jokes". A lot of his guests seem somewhat bemused throughout too.

  12. Ah, OK. I'll take Double Jeopardy as a recommendation then - another one for my "to watch" list!

If you can find it - had a quick look on Amazon and Play and they don't have it. Worth a search though.

  13. I wouldn't say I'm enough of a Noir fan to have a top ten but I've seen most of the films in your list.

DOA is a must and I did watch Double Indemnity for the first time a few weeks ago but I actually did mean Double Jeopardy. Not the easiest film to find (I was given a copy by a friend) but I love it. Classic tale of murder, blackmail and investigation.
