  1. Seems to have the same reputation that SharePoint used to. So many bad implementations of it means that most people have a bad experience of it. If implemented well, it can be amazing.

  2. Somewhat surprised that Civil War is getting such mixed reviews. Saw it at IMAX today and thought it was great. Not perfect by any means but a thoughtful film with some really good set pieces.

As for the second point about fewer traffic problems on motorways. Maybe I'm inferring incorrectly here that there's some element of added safety to cruise control? If that's not what you're saying then fair enough, I've picked you up wrong and you can stop reading. But if someone was saying that cruise control was in some way safer than not using cruise control then I would disagree with that. Cruise control, even to a tiny degree (and I'd argue it's not a tiny degree at all, but for argument's sake let's say a tiny degree...) requires an element of detachment by the driver from what is going on at their feet. That's kinda the point of cruise control. Leave it to the car. Now if something happens in front of you on the motorway requiring immediate action - as plenty of things in front of you often do on a motorway - then the driver who does not have cruise control on, is more engaged with their driving than the cruise control driver is. Even for a split second if it's to get your feet back into position or they're in position and need to find the pedals and apply them. For me, cruise control is less safe than not using it. After all, it's you doing less driving and having less control. Even in a miniscule way.

Most of the cars I've had in the last few years have had adaptive cruise control. Ally that with emergency braking and for me, it makes it safer. I've avoided one prang in the past when the car reacted quicker than I would have but then again, that might be because I was slightly detached, as you say.

Has there been any form of privatisation of public services that has actually been successful? Water, trains, mail are the obvious failures and I do not think power has been particularly great along with public transport generally. BT and British Gas don't seem the healthiest either but then have more competition. am genuinely struggling to see anything has been made better by it.

When you say 'successful", obviously you mean from the perspective of the customer, rather than the investors/vampires?

Just look at Charities, so many were and are corrupt ways of getting money from people to line pockets rather than help those they are intended to.

As someone who has worked for a whole variety of charities over the last 25 years, I'd love to see the research on that one.

Angel Delight Butterscotch is the best, absolutely hands down.

    I now have a hankering!

Butterscotch Angel delight day was the best day ever as a kid. Especially when mum had enough money to slice some banana on top. I’m off to buy some now and see if it’s still as good.

Looks like Sasha Baren Cohen maybe going on the "Cancel" list. Tbh, he does strike me as someone who gets off making people feel uncomfortable, even out of his many characters.

Seems a case of life imitating art or maybe there was no art and he is just an obnoxious being. I hope Wilson takes him down.

Then I shall continue to annoy! Woohoo, my favourite thing :)

Whenever I message one guy, he'll often give me a huge message with an update on himself, but the other?  very much "yep, not too bad thanks" which makes me feel as though I'm stepping on toes.  But my thinking is "at least he knows I've given him a thought".

    It's hard!

What's the problem with stepping on toes? If you do, the worst that could happen is your mate gets the hump for a bit. If you don't and there's something really wrong, well......

Not digging you out specifically here. I would have been of the same mind in the past but if someone is genuinely having a really hard time of it, my experience is that if you push past the initial block, then people can open up. Sometimes you need to persist and give them permission.

I know it's not that straightforward and none of us are trained experts in wonky brains but sometimes it's worth considering having uncomfortable conversations.

Is there anything I can do to help, or is it very much "give them space, they probably don't want to be asked about it"?

This ain’t it. I mean, I guess for some people that might be the case but for most people going through a tough time, having someone get in touch will be a good thing.
I know on the occasions where I’ve been less than myself, I’ve tended to shut myself away and steer clear of people. This has always been a negative reaction and it’s rooted in a mistaken belief that I don’t want to burden anyone and I can probably deal with it myself.
I guess I can only speak from personal experience but a distraction from misery is almost always a good thing.

  10. Not sure if it’s new on AppleTV or I missed it when it first came out but Five Days at Memorial is pretty traumatic. It’s all about a hospital that was cut off in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.
    Really worth a watch.

I understand the Wet Spam fans wanting Moyes out, the football is dreadful. A draw a decent result for Villa though.

I have this conversation with the ‘ammers at work all the time. I know it’s not the prettiest to watch but given they lost Rice in the summer, they’re still vastly outperforming in the league compared to last season.
They want him out regardless. I guess they’ll find out how good Moyes was when they replace him.

What's bizarre is the vast number of stupid people who believe what he says. It's crazy in this day and age.

That's very judgemental of you. I'm sure all these people will have done their research.

I know let's make snowflaked shaped bacon and sell it. Then offend everyone.

You'll need to make sure it's partly vegan and partly meat-based.

Will it stink less than the stuff that’s around at present?

Imagine it being legit for the guy downstairs with issues to be smoking that shit 24/7 through a hot summer.

Old boy just moved in next door from me. Keeps himself to himself but the weed stank is very strong. My missus is appalled and I don’t really give a hoot. I don’t mind the smell and I can get a contact high if I lean far enough out of the bedroom window.

Having said that, I was fortunate enough to have a long weekend in New York last autumn. The smell of weed was strong, sickly and inescapable. I was fed up of it by the time we got home.

  15. 2001/2002 I think. Our local after work pub in Whitecross Market. We’d all pile in after work for a quick one and every once in a while we’d be there all evening.
On one night, we were thinking about leaving, must’ve been about half ten, when the doors to the pub are thrust open and some northern bloke stands there shouting “has this place got guiness?”.

Myself and the barman both shouted in unison “It’s Johnny bloody Vegas”.
In my memory, he was fairly new on telly so a good few people didn’t recognise him.
He marched up to the bar and asked if he’d have to drink quickly or would there be a lock-in. The barman immediately told the dozen or so people that they had two options. Either they vacated the bar now or they were in for the duration.
what followed was about five hours of stories from Johnny which had the place falling about with laughter. Hardly anyone spoke, we just listened and laughed.

At least, that’s how I remember it.
