  1. The only people I've seen mention sacking Lambert bar one poster are the people saying it would be ridiculous to sack him.

    Maybe I've missed some posts.

So just in case, sacking him would be ridiculous!

    Thank you.

All this hype by posters who can't believe that others are 'calling for Lambert's head'. Hardly anyone is. Ironically, these are the 'knee-jerk reactionaries!'

Also, when I rule the world I will ban the words 'Knee-jerk' and 'literally'.

  2. What worries me is that we've looked far worse as a footballing team this half of the season then we did the second half of last season. Even though we're picking up results we managed to do this playing entertaing football the latter half of last season. So why not now? Had a though start? Yes, but we looked at the start of the season, then what we do now. We've even made additions to the squad. I expected us to build from what we were seeing last season, but we have not. Which is something that dissapoints me. It hurts saying this but I'm finding Aston Villa boring to watch these days.

Tut, tut.... It's not an entertainment industry you know. No, apparently if you want to be entertained you have to go to the cinema or sky diving or rat-buggering or something like that.

Your footballing duty in this life is to watch Guzan lump the ball upfield as many times as humanly possible, match after match, until his foot becomes a bloodied, festering stump.

    Be told!!!

  3. If we don't beat United on the weekend is it time to get the "Lambert Out" banners ready for the Boxing Day Crystal Palace game?!

    Of course not.

And I'm one of those with more angst than most about the turgid bile we're churning up week in, week out.

  4. People being unhappy with the brand of football being played is the best way to put it, Electric Avenue, I certainly agree with that phrase because we aren't actually playing bad football. In some aspects you could say we are, for example we aren't scoring enough goals, but people saying we are playing crap football are saying it from their point of view - it is a brand of football that they are unhappy watching.

Defensively we are playing very, very well and a great deal better than last season, which leaves me confused as to why we have any call at all such as "we need to get Lescott in on loan for 6 months." There are aspects of our footballing style that aren't pleasing to the eye as such, but they get the job done. There are other aspects to our footballing style that maybe aren't getting the job done, for example our strikers or the creativity department in terms of creating goal scoring chances. Lambert obviously knows this, he is a professional within the game, a professional football manager with some fantastic achievements under his belt. Of course he needs to be able to rectify such issues, in this case, by maybe buying a player or even two.

Why did he not buy these players in the Summer? Well, probably because just like ourselves he thought last season finished well and goalscoring or creating opportunities would probably be the least of our worries. You could also argue that we were linked to quite a few 'attacking midfielders' and creative players, but Lambert simply wasn't backed financially to bring them in.

Overall though we are and have been improving, in terms of results and points on the board most importantly but also important statistics such as the amount of goals we have conceded or the amount of clean sheets we have obtained.

Do I think we'll bring in a player to solve our creative/scoring issues in January? Hopefully, but that isn't down to Lambert as I've already mentioned it was clear as day we were trying to purchase such a player in the Summer. I'd like to think Randy will see our results are going well, our position is decent and to push on further he'll fund whatever move it is (within reason) that Lambert sees fit.

From there, maybe our football will be more pleasing to watch, with more creativity, more chances and of course more goals. We can't expect all aspects of our game to click after less than 18 months, last season we saw signs of great attacking football towards the end of it, this season we've seen great defensive performances from the get go. I for one am positive that Lambert will get things to click though, but we just have to be patient and also hope that he is backed where/when he needs it.

I saw it mentioned earlier in the thread but I'll say it as well, we should wait until at least the end of the season before making judgments on whether we're rubbish at football or not.

We can start playing football like the invincibles in their pomp starting from next week, in which case I will be cheering from the rooftops and praising PL for all he's worth. That still won't alter the fact that the football has been eye-bleedingly awful for two months.

If he left the club tomorrow would I be upset? Not at all.

You wouldn't be upset that we'd have to start all over again and throw away the relative stability we've had recently?

stability at what cost and what objective? Stability is great if what you have is doing OK.

Who knows what the future will bring but as with last season it aint very good, and even the most blinkered fan of Lambert would have difficulty to provide evidence to counter that

But we are doing OK. One bad result doesn't change that. It's almost as if people have forgotten where we've come from in the past 3 seasons. I'd take stability and security, and I guess you can say mediocrity over relegation battles any day. That's where we are right now, and we don't just go from there to challenging for Europe in 1 season, unless we're spending big.

Do you honestly believe we won't be in a relegation battle this season? Forget Man U. we are due an absolute kicking the the way we're playing. It's those below us I'm looking at and we are amongst the most predictably dull and dreadful in there.

  6. I did say I've seen no evidence that this is how he wants us to play long term. You can hardly call 13 games long term. His Norwich team and even us for a lot of last season played ok football so it's not like he's come in and played this kind of football for the entire time.

I chose the word evidence carefully. I have no proof but 13 games (or so) so far this season is definitely evidence. I do agree with you that the football was so much better at the end of last season though, which is the reason I want him to have plenty of time to prove me wrong - doesn't mean this football (if that's what it can be called) is above criticism.

I can't say I paid an awful lot of attention to Norwich before the PL connection. Like many I was too busy self-harming over 'the one who cannot be named'. And I know Absolutely nothing about his time at Colchester.

  7. I don't think 18 months is long enough at all really. I think most of this season is about mid-table consolation. We may start to see some better football towards the end of this season and into next. I've seen nothing to suggest that this is how Lambert wants us to play in the long term.

I hope you're right. I've got about 13 games of evidence this season to suggest that this is how he does want us to play.

I'm not saying 18 months gets you the finished article but you should expect to see his stamp. I hope to God this isn't it.

  8. Despite today's totally depressing set back I still have 100% confidence in the Paul Lambert project.

Sometimes you have to take a couple of steps backward before you can move forward again.

The bigger picture needs to win out here & I hope the majority of fans still buy into this.

Patience is a virtue & patience is the key. I hate the waiting too but it will be worth it in the end. Today's result & performance is par for the course as is the opposite extremeties of a win at the Emirates & a home win against Man City.

The truth for now lies somewhere in the middle & that is most probably where we will finish for a couple of seasons until the project really bears fruit.

    patience, patience, patience.

I'd think after 18 months we'd get an idea of the style of play PL is after. Doesn't look good to me. Man City at home keeps getting trotted out - we were totally outplayed at home. By half time we were lucky not to be at least 4 down with our hoofball tactics. If it were a boxing match it would have been a TKO before we delivered some sucker punches.

I'll be generous and say I have 50% confidence in Lambert at this point. But that's with expecting a complete change in style.

  9. Serious question

When we loose - and we are all hurting, the team we devote hours and pounds to has just been beaten.  What would you like the manager to say to make you feel better ? - Not just Lambert ....any manager of Aston Villa ?

I'd like him to say 'Loose, as in moose, goose and footloose'

Our luck ran out today? That's an understatement. We were poor no doubt but we were incredibly unlucky to have that penalty given against us and then not get a penalty for the foul on Gabby.

Claret and Blue tinted specs. We've had so much luck this season that it's masked the cracks.

Rubbish. I even admitted we were poor today.

They had a clear penalty denied before the soft one was given, don't forget. Dean had a shite game but going on about 'luck' is just ignoring the truth of the situation: one year on and we have not markedly improved.

We're fortunate that other teams are struggling but as the past few rounds of games have shown, the teams below us are capable of picking up wins.

The playing style hasn't improved but on the whole results have.

I suggest you reread your post. And our playing style is worse, easily the worst in the league I'd say. Results improved because our luck did. If we don't improve the way we play football we're in a relegation battle.

  12. Here come the overreactions....

Usual suspects who vanished mid week will no doubt make an appearence.

In perspective, its a rare away defeat whatever anyone says.

Our defence HAS improved, in the overall context.

We will lose some games you know.

Just because Fulham have been shit for so long doesn’t mean that a new manager might not get the tactics right, he did today as it was clear the job was to stop us counter attacking.

We looked good and Fulham looked woeful before they scored, we had some good possession. Benteke has a good effort and Fulham looked shaky, then they scored a goal and the ref gave them a penalty. We were then woeful and shit, this could happen to a lot of teams in the league not just Villa.

I’ll let the haters have their enjoyment, its pointless debating with them as they vanish during good results and only appear when we lose.

I didn't. I said the football was dire against S'hamton and West Brom and got some dreadful stick for it. So what have you got to say to me? There are as many PL lovers on here who run when we lose. I still think he should be given time but for the life of me I don't see this 'plan'. Your list should be replaced with one item:

    Our luck ran out today.

  13. Why do people think possession equals entertainment? To me chances and goals are what is entertaining, and Lamberts record shows that his team and the opponent will get their chances and score a lot of goals. Passing it around your own half is boring to me, and I can imagine it is to a lot of people as well.

It's a subjective point that can't be taken from you.

It all depends what you like. When teams play great football it's like art. Watching Barcelona is like looking at a Dutch masterpiece. Villa, at the moment, is like looking at a two-year old's palm-print. Both can be entertaining I suppose. Depends what floats your boat.

  14. We won't be in a relegation crap this season. There are far worse teams in the league than us. I honestly think we're battling for the 'best of the rest' title I'm expecting between 8th-12th. We certainly won't flirt with relegation like last season.

I admire the 'certainty' but if we battle the rest in the same way and do well, it won't be because of progressive football. The question we have to ask is can we step up from this level in the way we play? You can see it in the likes of Everton and Southhampton and even West Brom, but there's no platform here. We're playing Allardyce percentage football.

It's perplexing, because we played football last season and waited for it to come good, which it did. Maybe most on here go to work and think it's all ok. Down here, all my mates think we're the new Stoke.
