  1. Are we allowed to discuss film classification here? Haven't really dipped into the film thread too much so might be OT or already done to death this.

I got a copy of Alien on dvd on the weekend as part of some 3 for a fiver deal. my nipper is 13 and enjoys a bit of sci fi and I've mentioned previously that she should watch Alien. However, I noticed it was a cert 18 so re watched it on my own first and can't see a single thing in it that makes it 18. Relatively little swearing, no nudity or sex unless you count ripley wearing pants and a vest or a topless poster on a wall. The only thing that could possibly make it 18 is the alien chest popping moment. A big scene in 1979 granted, but surely not still an 18 because of that?

  2. General,

I'm currently having problems on a building site with a major national construction company 'over promising'.

they constantly promise things, then when they don't deliver we all sit in expensive meetings picking through the actual wording of what was promised and what was delivered.

Then I give a banal little talk on how it's better to under promise and exceed people's expectations.

Then I come on this thread....a well intentioned excellent prospect that's currently working against the club's best intentions. Don't give up on the thread, don't get thin skinned, do guard against enigmatic statements that we will interpret as a limitless pot of free money. If the thread is dead, could you tip off a mod so it can be locked and famed please. thanks.

I do know that's not a question, more a statement of the bleeding obvious.

  3. There's a balance needed here, the Manager can get another good result under his belt, the general could return to the forum, we can run out a few fringe players and I could get a game.

Needs a generally strong team, with Guzan, Ireland, Albrighton and myself all starting.

I'll have my boots in the car, but I'd appreciate knowing early on as it will influence what I have for my tea.

  4. I really hope that's true :crylaugh:

absolutely true, two brothers, Dean and Mark Curry / Rice

people that knew them or met them from different times used to call them the different names so they ended up known as half n half (which only really worked if they'd been called chips but was funny at the time)

  5. Just had a phonecall from the garage, my car is in for a service and they've decided the fuel filter looks good for another 12 months so they aren't replacing it. So just ringing to let me know there's a £150 saving on quoted service cost.

    absolutely unheard of!

It's to make you go back next time. When they will rip you off.

    probably true

probably an inflated price in the first place and then a bit of good p.r.

but I'm a sucker for good news and I'm now spending my 'free' £150 on something nice

  7. o.k. as mentioned before not something I've really considered but in the interest of scientific research I asked the missus for opinion on what her response might be.....

....she suggested that I needed to get the hang of how the front door works before I started messing about with the trademan's!

a bit annoying as I've used the front door for over 20 years and hadn't realised there were any major issues to sort out!

  8. does it count if she's slightly dead?

in reality, just never really appealed or occurred to me, I think I am the most vanilla person that ever there was.

I will ask the theoretical question tomorrow and report back the theoretical answer. I have a feeling i know the answer - but never presume.....

  9. Seems Tom Watsons one man crusade is starting to show its true light

Tom Watson MP is writing a book on the hacking scandal with Independent journalist Martin Hickman
    ££££££

aye, a book about a media scandal by a politician - it'll sell millions worlwide, then there's the film rights, merchandising (poseable figures, pies, password free mobiles), perhaps a musical? Hacked to Death! starring Susan Boyle as wee Johnny Prescott.

Don't really see this as a long winded way of getting a big pay off. But doubtless someone will check his accounts to see how much he earns and what he spends it on. Which incidentally, I think is perfectly legit if they have good reason to suspect it's kiddy fiddling and utterly illegal if they are just trawling for gossip.

  10. I can confirm that putting 90 pence worth of unleaded petrol into a diesel vauxhall insignia has no obvious negative consequence. Providing of course the following rules are followed:

    1) it already had a quarter tank of diesel to start with.

    2) the unleaded petrol nozzle, still sticking out of diesel tank, is stared at after the 90p squirt and you repeat the mantra 'fuckfuckfuckfuck'.

    3) you then decide that rather than 'fess up, you can stick another £40 of diesel on the top and drive around all day.

    4) at end of day, you return car to rental company.

  11. Lollipop Men/Women on zebra crossings and traffic lights.... There is a zebra crossing or traffic lights for a reason, i dont think people need help pressing the wait button
    We've had this before.

    My take on it is:

    (1) Little kids may just run across without pressing the button

    (2) Some motorists may ignore the light (or at least try to jump it)

lollipop lady 'retired' from the crossing outside our local school.

Two kids knocked down in the first week.

    The lollypop lady taking revenge?

    could've been!

The local direct action neighbourhood gestapo type group arranged a protest photo opportunity with the local free paper and the local MP. The commotion distracted a white van driver who managed to shunt the car in front....now that must have been planned.

  13. have you been looking at soft furnishings? Or maybe Renault? Baking? Anal plugs?

*just realised I've got an advert for construction site mobile toilets....which in all fairness I was all over earlier today and yesterday!

  14. According to Radio 4 earlier this Brooks woman that won't resign was head of the paper when they ran an editorial in 2002 stating that if something bad happened in a minister's department that minister should resign. The 'buck stops here' principle was quoted whereby as you were in charge you either knew about it and so should resign. Or, you didn't know, and thus you were incompetent, and so should resign.

  15. sad fact is, these lowlifes will think it's o.k. to do sick stuff like this because they know there are plenty more unthinking scum out there that are more likely to buy a newspaper if it has this type of shit in it. Just another low in an impressive history of lows.

  16. General Krulak here:

    6. I am back on the site but I must confess that I think that people are so disenchanted that I doubt if we can really get much accomplished. As always, I will try to be as honest as I can...and present the Fan's opinions up the line...but I am not sure how much faith anyone has in what I am trying to do for the Club and the Fans and if that is the case, then I don't want to waste your time or mine. I am willing to give it a go but only if its truly is valuable to you, the Fans, and to the Club. The ONLY reason I came on this site so many years and posts ago was to help the Club and the Fans.

    General,

Good evening, I'm not sure that fan disenchantment is a reason to cut off a stream of communication. That appears a little counter intuitive to me. I'm also not sure if there was a question in there that you intend to use the answer too? Was it rhetorical or will you count up the vox pop of responses? I suppose at present that could give you an 'out' just at the time it all appears to be turning a little sour. But that would surely be the polar opposite of everything you say the current leadership stands for?

For what it's worth I believe you should stay. It's a unique link, and both sides need to be grown up and know there will be times when opinions differ. On the fans side, some need to get a grip and calm down. On the Club's side, they appeared not to have a plan for explaining their thinking back there. If the managerial appointment pays off then my word, you guys will be able to do absolutely anything in the future and point at this moment. Of course, if the appointment doesn't work....well, I'm sure you've experienced flack.

  17. I was reading an interesting comment piece in the Grauniad the other day, not got time to link at the moment unfortunately, from a pro-EU fellow who was saying that even he had begun to believe the EU as it is now is in it's death throws. He suspected it would return with some lessons learnt but in a far less sizeable iteration - most likely a 'Northern European Union'.

I must admit that even as someone who is roundly pro-EU, from my perspective the union now is looking it might be starting to lurch to it's grave if things go very wrong further, but I do think that the idea is far from it's deathbed and would return in some capacity soon enough. It could be good for it in all honesty, once the dust had settled.

some form of 'greater deutschmark' perhaps?

I've seen this idea mooted in a few places lately, and it had a good airing on a recent Newsnight. The downside to it could be that the Germans are currently benefitting from a relatively poor euro which makes their exports competitive. A return to a more valuable currency would see German exports priced out of many markets - not least the 'other' half of europe.

It's early days for the euro, long term it will work. but then long long term I think we are heading towards a United Stated of Europe anyway. Which will make the euro far easier to manage.

  18. Seeing as this has been bumped, a little self promo...

currently mapping out and loosely scripting something to put out as a podcast regarding a local football team that's going through the mother of all bad patches and might (just might) be closed down over the summer. Either way, it will be a funny review of 90 years of history and a proper slating of the current owner.

proving tricky to put something together that doesn't involve one of us saying something utterly legally unsound

should be out before the new season kicks off if we can get our shit together
