Going by the Offside Law on the official IFAB app (which has actually been really helpful during all this – if only to prove that Rodri was indeed offside) an exception is made for a “save”. Even though it is deliberately playing the ball it does not render the attacking player onside. So that’s comforting, I guess.

On another note, the only update to the offside law in 20/21 is clearly marked by IFAB. It is something to do with how a striker can now be played onside if he receives the ball after a deliberate handball by a defender (obviously irrelevant here).

Googling the IFAB law changes PDF for 19/20 shows there were no offside changes that season.

Doing the same for 18/19 shows just one clarification (again, irrelevant here – it says the moment a ball is “played” should be determined by the the initial point of contact with the ball, rather than the moment the ball leaves the boot / head etc.).

So, unless I’m missing something here, there has been NO LAW CHANGE in recent years that pertains to the situation on Wednesday. Yet all I am constantly hearing from the media talking heads is this stuff about the goal being allowed because of a new law or a new amendment... What new law? What new amendment?

Going by IFAB’s very own published laws and updates, all that has happened is an on the hoof re-imagining / redefining of an existing and long established law. Nope, as far as I can see this is one big magic eye trick and we’re all being taken for fools.

Thanks for clearing the save thing up.

it’s so annoying everyone has just let this go apart from us.

media just shrug their shoulders and leave it. Is anyone fighting our corner or challenging those in charge at all?

obviously we can’t overturn the result but just like bloody brexit this is a case of “nah we didn’t lie, you’re just not believing in us enough”

I've given up. It's so inane trying to argue with these people.

It’s so energy sapping I’ll have to stop myself. Just want to chin every one of them.

even the PMOL statement proves they got it wrong. He never ever received the ball from Mings. He tackled him.

Anything short of 3-0 v Newcastle and I’ll be livid still. Need to improve our GD beyond the 2-0 loss against the lesser Manchester.

My favorite part of this whole incident is how everyone on Twitter suddenly became IFAB epistemologists.

Admit I’ve gone into it big time kicking off with all the city rocket polishers. Apparently Mings had the ball under control but the exact same incident with Ronaldo, the defender wasn’t controlling it.

either way it’s wrong because it’s about a deliberate act to play the ball. Having it under control doesn’t come into it

  4. Still livid.

their interpretation is, Mings made a deliberate act towards the ball, a new phase ensued and therefore no offside.

now can anyone explain why the following is now NOT onside.

Watkins goal hangs offside by miles. McGinn slams the ball at the keeper, he smothers the ball and it spills out to Watkins.

    he taps it in.

    GOAAAAL.

their interpretation now means the above is now a goal. That right?

  5. Can we get someone who is a journalist to ask the tough question ?

People are missing the point. Mings chests the ball, a new phase is correct but Rodri is STILL in an offside position when Mings chests the ball.

He then comes back to an onside position to tackle Mings.

The law states that is offside through gaining an advantage.

That law is there for pass backs and opposition players “receiving a ball” from an opponent.

And despite this new phase law, it DOESNT MATTER because Rodri is still offside.

    am I missing something?

it’s not like he was offside, runs back onside as Mings chests it and tackles him. That’s allowed.

this goal still isn’t legitimate at all.

Lmao, ok... £8m - including add ons - for a player they were (allegedly) trying to get £30m for in the summer is absolutely us taking the piss.

Can't blame us but can see why he's aggrieved 🤣

This is Levy territory. Not a fan of such a mickey take. Makes us look like bell ends.

like when my mate offered the dodgy trinket sellers in Tenerife €1 for a pair of fake Ray Bans and the guys lost their sh**.

    scary time! 😳

£30 million we won't be paying for someone who will play barely half a season.

    Madness!

    I’m all about the numbers.

he needs goals and assists. How many games isn’t as much of an issue but would mean he’s need to be phenomenal every time he comes back to the side.

Certainly gives the physios and doctors their chance to earn their bread and butter when it comes to managing players fitness.

You’d want Barkley to be hitting close to Jack numbers (roughly 1 goal and 1 assist every 6 matches)

Barkley currently 1 in 10. Caveat being how many of his 208 matches have been bit part substitutions at Chelsea. Quite a few I imagine.

if he plays half a season he should end with 3 goals and 3 assists, that’s not £30m worth of return over a contract.

So he does need to be playing more than he has this season. Providing he comes back and doesn’t get injured again should mean he plays over 2/3 of the season.

It's mad how well we're actually doing compared to 12 months back.

Funnily enough we were actually on 25 points this time last year (but had played 9 more games). We then took about 1 point from our next 7 games.

To have a situation where we have 27 points from 34 games as we did last season before the great escape we'd have to lose 18 of our next 19 games so an even worse run than Sheffield United this season and much worse than at any point in 15/16 so for anyone who still thinks we could be dragged into serious relegation battle from where we are now that's how bad we have to get and it's simply not happening with what we have now so might aswell look up the table.

I think we've got more than a decent chance of finishing 8th but obviously need to win a game or two over next few weeks and keep up with some teams who've used our hiatus to put decent leads over us.

We have a good chance. It might be rearranged but we play Leicester two days after they are away in Prague. That’s a good a time as any to play them.

We have a habit of getting managers sacked. We could sort Bruce out next

  9. We will still be a couple of games behind for a while but with City and Newcastle this week. You’d hope for 3+ from those two.

puts us 8th with two in hand over most after this weekend is done and dusted.

we’ve got a real opportunity to go with the top half group and not the bottom half.

by the end of Jan I think we will know which half we will end up in.
