  1. Does it not sound like he’s agreeing a contract already that if we exercise the buy back clause? I.E we exercise it and it’s done. If so that sounds great to me you are incentivising him to go out and earn a big pay rise.

  2. Would be great if we could do an auction like in taken with all the Saudi clubs. Where we just have Bailey, Coutinho, Dinge all walk out and do a few tricks and Monchi is on the mic just like we start the bidding at…

Don't know the details yet, but couldn't they just increase incentive bonuses? Things like goal bonuses, clean sheet etc, unless there is cap on them also. Signing on bonuses would go up massively, again unless they capped them. 3rd part sponsorships? Don't think increasing any of them would be fraud.

It's all part of a salary, simply put payments to players would be capped. Maybe they can pay their wives.

Depends on the type of salary cap it is, it could be similar to the NBA model of setting an annual cap that can go up or down depending on the financial performance of the league. Then you have a luxury cap which if you go over your normal salary cap you will pay a penalty. Now that doesn’t stop a team from being elite but it might put owners off for paying extra, but I don’t think that works well. Even in the NBA Golden state were in the luxury cap and their owner was fine to pay it due to them winning at the time.

Ironically our new structure at the club would be ideal for this new cap idea, Heck/Edens will be really familiar with it from being involved in basketball.

In theory it’s a good idea but there will be loopholes around it and it depends on how it’s implemented to be honest.

The NBA have radically changed their rules on the back of the spending of the Warriors and Clippers. The NBA has a soft cap, after a certain point once your salary is over the cap you are into the luxury tax but it does have various exemptions. The teams over pay different luxury taxes depending on the number of consecutive years they are in the luxury tax, if you're say 10m over and its your first year you pay 20% tax on that 10m i.e. another 2m. This tax money from all the teams over is divided by the teams not in the luxury tax, so it pays to be under the tax. Where you are over 3 years or more in a row you must pay 50% tax on the overage.

The new collective bargaining agreement has brought in strict rules for teams over the luxury tax, they are no longer allowed trade picks more than 7 years away and also can't take back more money in a trade (currently salaries in trades need to be within 125% for the trade to go through unless a team can absorb the salary via cap space). This means significant less flexibility for teams over the cap long term. However, the most important point is that the new cba has also brought in bands to the luxury tax and with each band having a higher rate of tax for each $ you venture further into the tax. I believe the Warriors are looking at $350m odd this season between salary and tax but with the new figures would be looking at something just under $500m. That is a significant increase and when you add in the trade restrictions, it is going to make life very tough for the warriors in Steph's twilight years.

It's hard to see a situation where teams will agree to allow any restriction on teams over being able to acquire players as it ultimately weakens the league. Teams also need to limit their wages to 70% of income for UEFA competitions. I can't see how a soft cap situation would work in the Premier League. If it is a situation where there is a hard cap for player salaries of say 3 times the lowest teams tv rights, that could make the league far more competitive which you would hope would only help viewing figures, but will it ultimately lead to a Saudi super league ala Liv in the golf?

I’m torn on Game 1. I can see the Nugs being rusty after so long off, or I can see them blowing out the tired Heat.

I think Denver put up 130 in game 1.

    Nuggets in 6.

Jesus I dont know, they've had a week off while Heat had 3 games that mentally would have taken a lot out of them, Butler's legs don't look the same as Round 1, add in the altitude, I can't see this going beyond 5.

I'm expecting neither but Villa's success will always trump others failure for me.

Oh yeah I just think it’s not the end of the world if we don’t get Europe in fact in might be a blessing in disguise. Big Sam coming in is a shock.

I might be the only VTer who is fully expecting to do the 'Roy Hodgson head drop in disappointment' when they survive again this season.

Right here with you, one of my buddies is a leeds fan and I'm as equally invested in them getting relegated as us getting europe.

  9. I’m not actually paying it but I’ve had to pay €20 to get into local club gaa matches, we played newcastle west there earlier this year and they’d one guy at least 3.5 stone overweight and I’m being nice there. Is it £38 a match for a season ticket? I’d easily pay that to watch villa at the moment. In fact I’ve had to pay 10 times that for an FA cup final ticket only to see arsenal hockey us.

With the demand (waiting list) and us hoping to challenge for top 4 with a top manager I think it’s justified. I’m sure it’s stinging for people with cost of living etc.

I do think, we will see this money on the pitch though. The owners have what put in 300m plus of their own cash.

    Hmmm, not sure about that.

If we make Europe, it seems to make a lot of sense as a transfer.

Personally, I don't actually think we'll sign anybody from the PL in the Summer as we'll do our shopping abroad but I do think Maddison is a very good player.

A buddy of mine wants United to sign Maddison and because of that I've been watching him very closely recent, I must say he's either phoning it in or is just done. I wouldnt go near him personally.

You'd think it must be attractive to come here and get coached by Emery and his staff. The transformation in the players here is off the scale.

We should be looking for players who are at clubs with bad managers, we can then exploit the value when Emery improves them.

    Probably cash in on him.

He will want to leave to win trophies but where can he go?

    Arsenal No,

Chelsea more of a mess than Spurs,

United won't be anywhere near CL or PL trophies for a while,

Liverpool maybe? But they won't want to spend massive.

    City have Haaland,

He'd need to take a paycut to join either of the Spanish teams,

    PSG won't win the CL.

    Bayern need a striker maybe?

That's why I think Newcastle (especially if they get CL). No way Levy lets him walk for free, he's going to cash in on him and there's very few potential suitors it would appear.
