We work set pieces very well that allows us to open up certain pockets for players like Ollie to have a free jump.

Ollie or whoever is scoring isn't exactly towering over their markers. We use a combination of picks and screens to free up Ollie at the front post or others at the back post.

But when the ball comes into our box - they do a combination of crowding out Emi and then just bullying our players.

When they do it its called crowding out and bullying, when we do it, its a screen.

I dont see teams dominating us in the air, west hams goals (including the disallowed ones) were all low to the ground and exposed us not being organised, often running back towards out goal.

I dont think this is about height.

Just plain and simple lack of height IMO.

not sure i agree, were seem to score a large percentage of set piece goals and also let in a lot. This means it cant be all about height. I think its about organisation and reaction. I cant recall many weve lost to direct headers against the biggest man on the pitch, its always a knock down and losing the 2nd/3rd ball.

  3. I think the bright future is all relative. I don't see us becoming one of the established elite, I do think we have the ability to present a challenge in future seasons alongside Newcastle, West ham, spurs.

The biggest concern I have for our future is how we cope post Unai and what comes next.

Rogers' decision making is better, he releases players into space. There's one reason.

Odd, my biggest frustration with Rodgers has been how long he holds on to the ball.

I do feel like we can cut the wage bill significantly this summer simply by offloading the deadwood and some good but not essential first teamers (e.g. Digne and Carlos). I mean, Dendoncker, Olsen, Carlos, Digne and Coutinho alone must be on a combined £400k+ a week surely?

The problem is digne and Carlos have both featured significantly so would need good quality replacements.

You also need to find someone to match their wages. (include Coutinho here)

And you will likely make a loss on all these players who came in for quite big money. I can't really see how our position will be helped here.

Hang on, you do know man city's turnover is approaching 4x ours? I think even spurs is double ours

How is it a good thing?

It'll just further increase the whoring out of football clubs and the embarrassing bed and pillow partnership bullshit let alone the fleecing of fans and preference of day trippers

Edit - this week is a timely reminder of what football has become under FFP - we had a kids charity as our main sponsor when FFP was introduced, now we have some garbage Asian betting company absolutely no one wants

I don't think the commercial whoring of Premier league football clubs can be blamed on ffp. It was comfortably hear before it.

Any system that protects the club and secures it future is a good one for me. I'd prefer us to be sustainable.

I know it's Joey Barton's podcast but the one with Keiran Maguire is interesting. In it Maguire says that the £105m figure was implemented in 2013 and hasn't changed since. This means that clubs are trying to operate at that year's 3 year cycle. The player salaries for Villa in 2013 were around £32.78m for the 13/14 season, compared to around £117m now.

The issue with the FFP/PSR 3 year £105m is that it has stuck at that whilst the whole cost of football has sky rocketed. It hasn't changed with the economic landscape at all.

But revenues have also sky rocketed. Look at the TV deal the vs now, look at the change in ticket prices. Personally I don't want us losing more money than that over a 3 year period.

PSR is a good thing for football in my opinion. I want my club to be hear in the future

                          Martinez.

    Cash.      Konsa.   Lenglet.    Digne.

                 Tielemans.

                                  Watkins.

    Rogers if Ramsey is injured.

Start strong, mean business, hopefully if we're in a good place (ie 2 up) after 60 start resting a few.

I'd be more than happy with a slow, turgid 0-0 then get the job done at VP.

I've been pretty accurate with my last 3 predictions so I should keep quiet with this one, because I could easily see 1-1 or 2-1 them. Hopefully not though obviously. UTV.

If not Ramsey I'd bring in Tim and push Mcginn forwards. I think we need to give him a chance at some point in the centre and it seems a good opportunity

As somebody who sits in the Holte Upper towards the right side, why do the police have a room between the Holte and the DE which just seems like a weird social meeting room.  The floor below it is the Police hub type room which is fair enough, but the top floor, during the game, just seems like half a dozen police facing away from the game doing not much.  It’s a prime spot that I assume could be used for a better use commercially.  It’s not a police lookout as they are always casually looking inwards so i’m not sure what it is for rather than a breakout room, informal meeting room or whatever but a prime spot wasted that could generate some revenue.

That room is where I get my VAR updates. Ten thousand of us watch that telly when it's a televised game. Ridiculous that's this is the match going fans best way of understanding whats going on.

It's a great target in terms of customer experience, but in terms of income it means just about nothing.

By the looks of things, we're making maybe £3-4m a year on our food & drink offers, and we're making more of that in Hospitality than we're making in the concourses. So maybe £1.5m a season - up that by 25% with better offers and you add £375k - or an increase of about 0.16% to our overall income.

Agree it's a lot of effort for not a lot of margin but as a football club we only have so many revenue streams.

The poor quality food and poor customer service also create a poor impression of the ground and the overall experience.

Make these better and you can start to charge more of a premium on tickets. This is the model we're already seeing the club adopt but it's currently all or nothing, poor food or hospitality. For me it's clear the club has room for something in the middle and if don't right that represents income.

my favourite bit of VT is our ability to all jump onto a grainy image in the absence of actual news. And i mean this sincerely, takes me back to the pallet gate days, the number of chairs at a press conference.

Also, i think that is Ramsey not Rodgers. Though it also looks like hes wearing a snood and Moreno likes one of those

The thing is, if we were to double the amount of food and drink we sell at Villa Park, you're probably looking at improving matchday income by at the very most 20% and matchday income is only 10% of our total income - so doubling the amount of food and drink would add maybe 2% to our figures at the very best. In the scheme of things it's not a major factor - a better sleeve sponsor would make twice the impact.

unless you can get a premium offering for food. If you go to the fan zone the average price point for a meal is probably a tenner, costs I admit are higher but so are the margins.

I know its mentioned often but the Spurs stadium has a wide array of food types at a premium price with excellent customer service. This should be the target.

  13. I dont think hes planned as a replacement for anyone tbh. I think he may have some potential to be great, or he may even become a squad player. This is ok.

This January we seemed to spend c12-15m across 4 or so players.

Previous windows has seen us spend the same amount of money on a Dendonker.

If one of those 4 becomes a bench player that comes off the bench 10 times a season and starts 4 games then were at worst in the same position. If we can sell someone on for a profit or turn one of these into a starter then we are starting to talk about a good transfer strategy.

The only risk is if the same money was needed to improve the first 11.

i cant get my head round this.

But are we going to be under investigation or not?

everyone is always under investigation. You submit your accounts, you say whether you are compliant with PSR, we wait for the premier league to agree/disagree.

If youve made a big profit in your accounts, youd expect the same from a psr perspective.

If you've lost a lot, expect some scrutiny.

Id expect us to be running close, the owners are trying to squeeze every last penny out.

If we'd made a big profit, we would probably all be wondering why we hadnt seen that money invested.

@Brentfordnylons on another thread has said PL are having a meeting in June to announce new rules on FFP which will suit clubs with Billionaire owners.

Apparently the top 6 and a few other clubs outside will be free to spend as much as they like as long as the spend is backed up with guarantees a type of escrow account will be up for the vote.

    UEFA are in agreement apparently.

not possible that they can limit it to top 6 clubs and a few outside. It wouldnt surprise me to see something implemented that allows owners to burn their own cash as long as they secure the finances of the club.

I wonder how long it is before third party ownership is also suggested like we see in other countries. Companies can bear some of the player cost in exchange for a slice of the profits.

I think the key is that what we have (Unai) is what the other clubs are missing. Respect to Howe but he’s got a ceiling and Palace, Forest don’t seem to understand the manager is the critical part of maintaining sustainability.

I believe that’s why NWSE pulled the trigger fast with Gerrard. They’re no Xia idiots and knew the upward trajectory had to continue immediately given the revenue and spend. I think that’s also why Deano got the sack and no time to turn it around.

If we can make UCL for 3-4 years in a row, the combination of revenue, exposure, and commercial increases can make us competitive.

English teams that have qualified for the UCL in each of the last 4 seasons...Manchester City.

A very tough ask for us.

I'd be very surprised if we didn't play a full strength team.

im not 100% sure what full strength is, i full expect us to play 11 of the 14/15 that typically play though.

My guess is we will see Pau but not Konsa (given he was a late decision to play at the weekend, 2 game in 6 days for Konsa would be a surprise).

I dont think we'll see Ramsey if he hobbled off. I think we might see Tim in his place with Mcginn playing off the left or Diaby.

    I think we'll see Digne.

You can resale with the loads of time to go and to spare. The truth is often nobody is buying.

You can list for resale, but the tickets can only be sold once the entire stadium is sold out. As a result virtually no mod week games go to resale.

OBE, this would be the big change for me. Sort out resale. Let me list my seats (mine and sons) and sell me tickets straight away.

When I can't make a game, let me swap my seats online to friends or family. The phone lines are just too inconvenient.

    I'll renew, I'm anticipating 15% increases.

How are you so certain about it?

Looking at the numbers I'm pretty sure we will need to generate some profit in June.

In 2022 season we generated £24m ffp surplus.

In 2023 season we made a loss of £118m. minus £25m ffp allowable expenses that gives £93m ffp loss for last season.

93-24 = 69m ffp loss, which leaves us with  36m allowable loss to play with this season.

To get to 36 from 93 we need to reduce our losses this season by £57m in comparison to last season.

Have we done it so far? I know our revenue have went up but so our expenses (diaby and Co ain't cheap). I really feel we are short and we will see someone sold in June. I hope I'm wrong and we can somehow scrape through, but the numbers are not encouraging.

I dont believe the club would have risk needing a June sale to comply. We spent money in Jan when we didn't need to (the incomings won't really feature).

Its likely Archer could come back onto the books and potentially zaniolo if we trigger a purchase.

When I stack up those things we just wouldn't have made those purchases if we were so tight. I just don't believe we would gamble like this
