Martin O'Niell is on the verge of a shock double swoop for Wesley Sneijder from Ajax and Phillipe Lahm from Bayern Munich, for around £15M.

Sneijder, 22, a regular for the Dutch national team under manager Marco Van Basten, has been tracked by many top european clubs.

Lahm, 21, who came to prominence during the World Cup with the first goal of the tournament for the host nation, is just the sort of attacking left back Villa have been hunting.

This would continue Martin O'Niells policy of recruiting the best young talent available.

Villa would love to sign both players but may have to settle for one, it is thought that the Sneijder deal is more likely to go through before the window slams shut, as Ajax have a history of selling off their players.

MON said repeatedly at the start of the season that we were punching above our weight. This season is about consolodation, keeping a cool head and sorting the squad out. As long as we dont get relegated, I'm not too bothered about this season.

Next season is a different matter entirely.

Regarding marketing, not a question per se, just a couple of statements:

a) You rarely see a Villa top on sale outside of the midlands, never mind potential prospective fan bases such as Malaysia or Thailand. Recent success isn't a factor - Liverpool FC have an amazing fan base in SE Asia, even prior to their recent European Cup Win. We're simply not in the mix..... even I don't have the opportunity to buy Villa apparel in London - and I know a good few fans down here in the Big Smoke.

I personally feel we look cheap with the sponsors we have. I read the deal with 32Red is worth seven figures over a period of time, which I feel falls way too short of who Aston Villa are. As someone who is invloved with sales day to day, I think it would have been better kudos to have an NGO sponsor us for free (a la Barcelona and UNICEF - even though Barca did make a financial contribution), rather than taking peanuts from a dodgy, Gibraltar based online gambler.

I fully expected a riot to happen when we hadn't spent £100 million by Feb 1st. I'm now thinking this riot may occur sooner than that!

I don't think it's complaining. It's more anxiety - we haven't been players in the transfer market since the late 90's. I suppose we're like a bunch of kids on xmas eve wondering what we're going to get for Cjhristmas.

Petrov is quality but has still not fully adjusted from having 4 hard games a season to every game being tough.
