I really can't see us signing 9 players.

More like a maximum of 6. I think you may be disappointed this summer if your expecting that many.

Then again, I'd be happy to be proved wrong

I am not expecting that many, all my comments are just purely based on the title to this thread, speculation together with an opinion.

I agree the 5-6 are realistic numbers.. i was only saying 8-9 becuase of unsureness regarding certain players maybe heading for the exit and having adequate cover for all positons!

I agree i would love to see it aswell pan out and i hope i could be proved right aswell.

My feet are firmly on the ground. ....until we sign them! :winkold:

I believe this is what MON is going to do before the season starts and would give us a very healthy option next season of playing various formations and we will have adequate cover in every position incase/when injuries and suspensions may arrive.

Also allowing us enough depth to push for Europe with some tasty cup runs.

Maybe Sorenson or Taylor may be sold but i think we can be sure of Hughes, Davis, Hendrie, DJx2, & McCann are all set to leave.

We should also consider loaning Moore out instead of selling him as like were going to do with Ridgewell!!

This was a post i done the other day.

Reo Coker has not yet signed and we unsure whats going on with L Moore.

and it shows 8-9 players needed!

dont think we'll sign 9... more like 6 max

thats 3 top signing (NRC being one) and 3 half decent players for cover

Why, surely we want every position to be filled with cover in that same positon to if we want to last the season, have cup runs, avoid suspensions, injuries etc and push for europe.

After the players that are leaving eventually leave, it leave us a squad of 16 players!

Adding 6 would only take it to 22, should it not be 24/25 players considering all of the above?

i think we should have all taken note of the past 5 seasons and what happens when you dont have a full healthly squad.

We have moaned about it for years... now we have a fantasic oppurtunity to do what we want and move forward, it feels that some dont want us to.

If you think we are only going to sign 4 players before the season starts.. then i think you must be the one on the waccy baccy my friend.

MON is going to sign upto maybe 8 or 9 players.

There have been quotes of 'Class signings arriving' and i don't disbelieve it.

It feels like e have been linked to 2000 'players' weather its press talk, MON watching someone, signing half the tesco squad etc etc.

..Plus about another 400 odd from Football Manager because they are world beaters on a simulator.

IMHO we are looking at buying some good english talent and some 'class signings' from abroad.

I don't expect ALL 8-9 to be 'World Class'. i guess roughly 3 or 4 of them will be the star signings.

The other will be a combination of good, strong, mixed balance of players that might be british, might be from abroad. some could be late 20's, some very early 20's.

Some might like hotels.. some might play on Xbox's!!.

Its appears to set a 2 group stage in some way of:

--Tier 1 ~ The 3 or 4 'Big Name signings'. = DR, DC, MD, & ST

--Tier 2 ~ The remaining of Good quality backup/rotational players of GK, DL, MC, ML & ST.

(Hence why i have mentioned 2 strikers coming in due to keeping the L.Moore situation in mind. {8-9 players??}).

Id like everyone to set one name to each position of the players in each of the tiers.

Keeping in mind of each choice that

A) It is realistic and there is chance Villa would get him.

He would be good enough to be in that tier you allocated him to.

C) Are we already interested / been watching him (to your knowledge!).

My choice as follows would be-

Tier 1

DR - Phillipe Lahm - Bayern Munich

DC - Per Metersacker - Werder Bremen

MD - Wesley Sneijder - Ajax

ST - Fred - Lyon

Tier 2

GK - Craig Gordon - Hearts.

DL - Sylvain Armand - Paris St. German

ML - Samir Nasri - Marseille

MC - Nigel Reo-Coker - Westham

ST - Jermaine Defoe - Tottenham (baring in mind if luke moore stays or not)

Yeah, it came about last night but i don't think anyone has heard anything else regards wether how much they want? are they willing to sell him! etc.

and another for all the Koumas fans.. if he was anything special, would he still be at Westbrom by now if he was!

yeah mainly a left winger and id rather it be Nakamura than Kewell we signed 1000 X over!.

Are you kidding me!!! WE MUST get Nakamura.

I watch scottish football week in week out, yes mainly Celtic, and alough we are getting a 'Aston Celtic' tag, he is one of the last 2 players id only buy from Celtic (Boruc the other!).

This guy can take a superb free kick - on par with beckham, he has good pace and likes to run at defenders causing problems.

He has tended to drop out towards the end of games but thats something that will soon be ironed out of him.

It has also been a superb light as to Celtic over in other countrys.

Celtic had a huge influx of fans over in Japan because of this guy! - Something Villa could take advantage of!

Yes shirt sales would rocket and i guess MON is only ENQUIRING about him incase someone else he has as his desired to sign first might not come off!

But i'd love it if we signed this guy.

We surely need to get harder competition for places and wouldnt it be great to even have a bench that easily could make a difference in a game?

Wesley Sneijder is such a versatile and skilled midfielder that he can play in numerous places. Young can play either left or right midfield...an as a striker...so why do you think that they all fight about one place and why do you think that the team will look the same every game?

Young could be first choice in away games because of his pace...whereas Sneijder is stronger and more skillful and could be more suited for a strong midfield at home.

What are we going to have behind the first eleven? Kids?

Some would seem to be happy with that!

But when it came to it going all tits up they would be the first out the wood work to say we ain't got enough players / depth etc.

They also forget injuries, suspensions, and the possibility of playing 52-54 games if cup runs turn out good!

It needs to be battled against with a squad of 24-26 quality players all round to make us last the journey.

Especially if we are wanting european football the season after aswell!!

Still can't see it happening though, seems to have his heart set on a move to Spain.

Which has now fallen through!

This is why he is being strongly linked with us now!

We also have Freddy Bouma who could have a word or 2 in his Dutch team mate's ear! 8)

Is Petrov now going to be benched?! I don't think so. Can't see Schneider coming for that reason alone. Hope I'm wrong and they can play in the same team together, somehow.

I can, Petrov gets played mainly next to the right midfeilder in centre midfield, as does NRC i believe, with Barry slotting in next to the left midfielder in centre, the signing of Sneijder would benefit the team with him also being able to play in this position aswell as on the left of mid, flexability to the team, cover/backup/rotation etc and a typical MON signing.

Headlines on the back of the meaning eveil are that we will be back in for Schneider (sic) as the deal with Valencia is now dead.

i cant believe we missed out on titus, look hes attracting others to the club this is the big signing we needed that would have brought more players IMO.

It says on sky sports that Sneijder is set to stay at Ajax.

Do we all feel now then that we can forget this one and put it to bed that he definately won't be signing!

With his positions he can play in, this will also bring flexibility to the team.

So would the fee speculated be a bargain to get such a player?

Now that talks with him and Valencia not happening, has he stated he wants to leave Ajax and is it likely we can/will sign him?

Anyway back on topic, and onto Sneijder.

Can someone give a realistic thought/reply into~

- Whats currently going on with his situation?

- What would he approx cost Villa?

- What would he bring to Villa?

- What would he offer in terms of on the field, best position etc.?
