  1. now that villa isnt signing becovic, does this mean the club will need to grovel back to guzan?

Why would they need to grovel back? The guy is paid to do a job.

  2. Groningen are a pretty small club so if we went up to around £3m (~€4m), they'll accept. That would be big money for them. I'd guess that the initial bid was nearer to £2m.

Also when we signed Bacuna, they were very complimentary in the way we did business.

He's very direct so he'll suit the style Tim will want to play but more end product which N'Zogbia lacks.

  3.

FC Groningen has turned down an initial bid from Aston Villa on Tjaronn Chery.

Chances are that Villa does not resign himself to the rejection of Groningen and comes with a second bid.

How reliable is this site, does this basically confirm we've gone for him or potentially made up gossip?

Seems reliable as the reporter is close to Groningen it seems, confirms 1st bid we made has been rejected but is not likely to deter us in making another one.

We were all talking about him this time last year when Groningen absolutely outplayed us and took a big green shit on us preseason. 4-0 or 4-1 I think it was when Vlaar was at the game ans we didnt know if he was going to stay after the WC. Then he did an interview in Dutch and we had to know what he said (Man that year has flown by).

But yeah, I remember that Chery dude looking a world beater (as have many others against us), scored and made all the goals and looked a talent. Would be a good signing if true

This is what I was gonna post. Screams of "sign him up" from anyone and everyone watching. He's friends with Bacuna too. Could be a real possibility
Now not denying he's friends with Bacuna but if it's based on them being at Groningen together, wouldn't be possible as he joined when Bacuna left.
Bacuna's brother is still at the club and I believe he's still in touch with a lot of the guys there. Maybe not ones that signed after he'd left though, I did jump to conclusions.

If we're signing Chery, I think he'd be an excellent addition and would be a younger better version of N'zogbia if he adjusts

Think he'd have a word with him if we are interested in him. Yeh think he'd play where N'Zog is and hopefully more consistent.

  6. Daniel Ainsworth, Telegraph editor, claimed on Twitter that we enquired about Llorente - although the player wasn't interested. He eludes to our 'ambition'.

If that's true looks like Sherwood is trying to get a replacement for CB.

  7. if theres truth they have bid just under 22 mill for Bacca then i doubt they would come in for him?

tho the 22 mill bid is a rumour but contact has been made..throw bids round and see who accepts first?

These are ghost bids to frustrate CB into throwing a strop, they will never pay 22m for a 29 year old.

  8. If hes there number one target then they should pay the clause

they messed about with Barry and what happened.they lost out

hope he stays but if the clause is triggerd hopefuly its a team out the prem

But then they did the same with Downing, They have this huge arrogance, pisses me right off. Think we should have Soton FC on our header when we ask them for a fee, seem to be paying those guys anything for their players.

  9. I think it's only a matter of time before CB throws his toys out of the pram to force the move, especially when Liverpool are involved. Think this will get done but fee will be in region of 25m and 30M, can't see us sticking it out for the release clause.

  10. I love Guzan, but he hasn't made world class saves in a while and for me it wasn't just the mistakes, it was the fact he had stopped saving anything. The Guzan of 2-3 years ago was pulling out saves that he had no right to do. He kept us up. The save from Samba against QPR for instance.

...but it got to the point this season that any old shot was hitting the back of the net. He is a good keeper though, more than good enough for us and with a better, more settled team he will come through it and get back to his old form. I hope we don't sign another keeper.

Though, I think some people have bigged up him a bit too much here,

    Spot on!

  11.

    Right.

Guzan is a top keeper. The best we've had in ages.

STOP saying we need to replace him / buy a new keeper. There are 8/9 other areas of the pitch we need to look at before even contemplating replacing Guzan.

    He's a brilliant keeper.

Absolutely spot on. Guzan is an excellent shot stopper, and brilliant at coming out to claim the ball from crossess and corners.

Ok, his distribution is very average at best but no goalie is perfect. Outside the top 6, Guzan will hold his own against any other keeper.

He is the least of our worries in terms of transfers.

I actually think he's better than Mignolet and Ospina to go one further.

The only reason Guzan isn't considered 'brilliant' is because he plays for Villa. He would very much hold his own in the top teams around Europe.

    The least of our worries.

One wonders, then, why the top teams around Europe aren't bidding for him? Arsenal are looking for a new keeper, and he's younger than Cech. Real Madrid are looking for a new keeper, and he'd be cheaper and easier to get than De Gea. He's been dropped by Sherwood, so you'd think we would probably entertain a big enough bid. And yet mysteriously, the phone doesn't seem to be ringing off the hook.

You know why? Because he's not brilliant. He is a perfectly average Premier League goalkeeper, not the best, not the worst, somewhere in the middle. By the standards of his peers, who are the only worthwhile people to compare him against, he isn't brilliant.

Name me two or more goalie in this league who takes the ball better then Guzan in the Premier League.

And then, think back and ask yourself how many world class saves Guzan has made. I can think of a couple.

Then think about where we would be if we didn't have Brad Guzan for the last 3 seasons.

Lastly, think about the crap defenders he has had infront of him for the past couple of seasons.

He is brilliant at some aspects in his game.

World Class saves, have a word with yourself. He was poor last season and to make out he was some kind of saviour is absurd. I can't remember a save Guzan made last season that I thought wow what a keeper. His kicking is the worst in the league of goalkeepers, never have i seen so many goal kicks end up out of play. I agree we have more pressing issues to resolve and where we are currently, another season with Guzan will suffice,  but to make him out to be better than us is ridiculous.

  12. The job is pretty simple for Colombia, he wins it and passes it on, at Villa he won it and they'd give it him straight back. Then we'd just pass it side to side, think he did struggle with the pace of the game, but I'd definitely keep him.

  13.

His distribution was actually very good in the last two USA matches he played. He probably has been working on it a lot in training.

I was kidding. But it is pretty bad.

As to your other points, I continue to think of Bradley as "the one who got away", and I think Yedlin's lack of chances this spring come mostly from being a young player moving to a new club as a winter transfer right on the back of a full MLS season. I think the Gold Cup this summer will give him a chance to get some steady minutes with the national team, find his form, and go into next season in a better position to put himself in the picture at Tottenham. It's still early days for him. Would I love to have him (either of them) at Villa? Of course. Do I think it'll happen? Not likely.

I, for one, would be happy to see us go for a player like Jordan Morris. The kid is a spark of energy and he doesn't seem to be afraid of anybody. This could be his summer.

We had a deal agreed for Bradley, think it was 2.6million, McLeish pulled the plug on it and signed Jenas.
