  1. anyone watching the boxing?

the appleby fight was a proper good scrap, I must admit I had him down as losing that but it was close you cant argue with the decision either way it would have gone

I only caught the last couple of rounds so I can't really comment on the scoring but the body language from Appleby's team didn't suggest that they thought they had won.

Burns is boxing well so far. I've gave Moses just 1 from the first 7.

  2. I watched the Maidana - Alexander and the Broner - Perez fights yesterday. I thought Alexander was superb against Maidana. Mind you, I think Maidana is a limited fighter, technically at least. He is a beast physically and always has a punchers chance, but I think he is destined to always come up short against slick boxers like Khan and Alexander.

Broner on the other hand? He could be the next Naz, hugely entertaining, flashy, good at making mid ranking opposition look awful but will he be able to join the elite? It will be interesting to see. I thought he was superb this weekend, though I dont know too much about Perez other than he was unbeaten, but did he have a padded record?

Khan slick? Khan's one of the least slick boxers out there.

I was impressed by Alexander. He's made a lot of improvements to his game since the 'defeat' to Matthysse. There was a lot more snap in his jab and he controlled range much better with it. I'd like to see Maidana back down at 140, that's where he can use his physicality to the full extent. An all-argie fight with Matthysse would be good fun.

I've been quite critical of Broner in the past and when the bout with Burns was scheduled I gave Ricky a very good chance. Broner shown plenty of flaws in his fight against Ponce De Leon (which I thought he lost) and even in his last fight against Rodriguez. Saying that I thought he shown a lot of improvement against Perez and seems to be improving in every fight. I'd like to see him up against someone who he doesn't hold huge physical advantages over (unlike Perez). Outside of Uchiyama, which is a very unlikely bout, I don't see many fights for him in what is a poor division. A move up to Lightweight would probably get him some bigger money fights and he's certainly got the frame for it.

  3. Following the Cleverly fight on Twitter. Seems like he is up against an utter bum.

    It was a stinker.

Karpency shown absolutely no ambition and Clev really should have put him away. Enzo and Gavin won their fights with ease too.

Warren was talking about unifications and the like next. My money's on Maccarinelli.

  4. Ah I knew the maidana fight was coming up but didn't realise it was this weekend, is it on the same time as the cleverly fight? hope not cuz I can only record the same thing that I am watching because my sky + is shite

yeah that seems to be the way that box nation is going at the moment with the lineups, rather than having 3 or 4 big names on everynow and again like sky was doing with the english fighters they seem to be spreading them out far too much for my liking

get cleverley, groves and mitchel all on a best of brittish bill or something like that rather than having 1 a week fighting a nobody

No, the Maidana fight will be in the early hours while Clev's should be about 10pm, I'm guessing.

Having them spread out doesn't bother me, the standard of opposition does. I did worry about this when Warren left SKY because I imagine there is virtually no quality control over him (not like that stopped the Burns defences anyway, though). The Karpency fight looks a shocker, and that Mitchell fight was poor too. Nothing wrong with the Groves-Anderson rematch for me, I'm actually quite looking forward to it.

  5. rite then enough of this pair of **** idiots

I see B-hop and Dawson are having their rematch on 26th april

    gunna be shown on boxnation

this weekend is Cleverly v Karpency, Cleverly should absolutely piss that.

I fancy Hopkins in that one. Especially at the 3/1 being offered. Hopefully it isn't the stinker that the first was.

The Karpency fight looks like your standard Warren WBO defence. No doubt we'll have to listen to how Cleverly will be taking on the world after this fight. I'd have much preferred a Bellew rematch.

There are a few other good fights this weekend as well. Alexander vs Maidana on SKY and Povetkin vs Huck on Boxnation.

  6. At first I held your view because I thought Haye had gone their to promote his own cause of his own back. However he is officially retired and was at the fight and the press conference as part of a media team (not sure for which broadcaster) covering the fight.

So his presence there if not his motives were legitimate and reasonable.

He was there working for Boxnation covering the fight but had finished his work before the press conference and was due to leave the arena before the press conference started.

  7. I see that the Mayweather - Cotto is on boxnation

where does this leave the average viewer who pays for fights?

isnt box nation £10 a month for a minimum of 6 months?

will it be available for £17:99 on primetime or whatever as well

I'm not fussed as I have boxnation so I wont be paying any extra to watch it any way I was just wondering if this would be available to the casual boxing fan

It's minimum 3 months on SKY and 1 month on Virgin. It will be exclusively on Boxnation. If they want to watch it they'll have to sign up, I guess. I can't see it getting anywhere near the amount of viewers that the Ortiz fight got without the Channel5 advertising, and with the added hassle of signing up.

  8. Peterson-Khan II on for 19th May in Vegas.

I was looking forward to Peterson-Marquez which was rumoured but can't complain with this. It's a bit silly having it in Vegas when the sales will no doubt be terrible. At least if they had put it on in LA as they were talking about originally they could have filled it with some local fighters on the undercard.

  9. Fury vs Fraudley will probably happen this year, wont it?

I hope not. When Aud was mentioned a while back Hennessey said "I've just brought Channel 5 into boxing - I don't want to chase them away!" Regardless of that, Harrison is still a name and always pulls in viewers. You can see why a promoter would be tempted to make it.

How about a Chisora rematch for the WBC title... :P

  10. Yeah, that will be the test of his hunger for the sport.

London (Feb 8.) Hennessy Sports have announced this morning that Tyson Fury has vacated his British and Commonwealth Heavyweight titles in pursuit of being a household name on his journey to become Heavyweight World Champion.

Mick Hennessy said "We have a great schedule in place for Tyson on Channel 5 and I'm not prepared to have that affected by other promoters, purse bids and titles. Fury vs. Price was a quality fight and in my opinion it should go out to the widest possible audience, that's why I offered David Price £100,000 to fight Tyson Fury on Channel 5, which unfortunately was rejected by his promoter on Monday.

"Tyson's next steps and further information will be announced over the next few days" added Mick

Tyson Fury said "It's been an honour to have won and held both the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles, but as I'm now currently number 7 in the world it's time to move on.

"If David Price really believed he could beat me the smart move in my opinion would have been to take the great pay day that was offered by my promoter to appear on terrestrial TV."

"I'm really excited about my future plans as I'm doing things differently and currently training like a Trojan in pursuit of becoming heavyweight champion of the world." added Tyson.

That's a shame, but somewhat expected.

  11. Sonny Bill Williams gets punched at a press conference

Okay, it's hardly world level boxing but it is a somewhat interesting story. If you dont know, Sonny Bill Williams is a professional Rugby player, he is an international player in fact. While he doesnt start every game he was a member of the New Zealand squad who won the world cup a few months back. Seems insane that New Zealand would let one of their players moonlight as a professional boxer, especially as Rugby Union is almost a religion down there. What are the chances of an England Euro 2012 squad player being allowed to be a boxer over here? (If so, who would you pick and who would you put him in with? ;)) Curtis Woodhouse did it of course, but he had five minutes in the Premier League with Small Heath and has spent the most of his footballing career at non league clubs since he became a pro boxer.

I didn't know he was a boxer. He took that shot quite well to be fair.

The closest comparison I can think of that you didn't mention is the NFL player Tom Zbikowski who's had a few fights recently.

Rooney's a bit of a Boxing fan. I remember seeing him post on twitter while watching a fight saying what a certain fighter could improve on. I'm not sure Fergie would approve though!

  12. Maybe a deal has been struck for a rematch .. the IBF belt wouldnt have been on the table as things stood , this way te rematch is for both belts

And I guess this way Peterson gets to keep the win rather than it being a no contest ??

I don't think it was ever going to be a no contest. I suspect that may have been the reason they pulled the appeal, although we'll see what GBP have got to say...

    Edit:

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said that he expressed concern to IBF President, Daryl Peoples, that the hearing was not going to offer Khan's side of the argument to be fairly expressed.

"You have certain officials who were going to be there telling their side of the story, and you have others which were not going to be there, and I think that the bottom line is that that would result in a one-sided story, and I have shared my views on this particular subject with the IBF President Daryl Peoples a couple of weeks ago," Schaefer told RingTV.com.

"I told him that if he was in fact going to have certain people there, and others not, then that does not sound to me as if there was a fully transparent meeting because only part of the story was going to to be told. So I to not see any reason to participate in such a process. That's basically what it is."

Schaefer did not elaborate on the specifics of his assertion.

"It would have been a one-sided hearing where not all of the parties would have been there to tell the story. It would have been there to tell the story. It would have been a one-sided story. They were going to include only partial representation of the fight's officials at the proposed IBF hearing," said Schaefer.

Yeah, I'm sticking with the theory that they knew they were going to lose and that pulling out would have looked better than the appeal being rejected.

  13. That doesn't change the fact that Golden Boy accepted in a meeting after the fight after seeing the scorecards involved that the correct decision was announced.

    Source on that?

All I've read is Schaefer constantly going on about how the score cards didn't match, that the IBF one disappeared for a while, only to turn up looking dodgy as hell in being the neatest scorecard he'd ever seen.

I can't remember where I read it initially. I'm sure I read it first in the days after the fight, but Barry Hunter said it in his statement this week as well:

"Immediately following our bout Golden Boy and Khan requested a meeting among us with the sanctioning organizations and the Boxing Commission. When we left the meeting Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins and I agreed with the commission that the scorecards were correct and Lamont won the fight."
