Can't see a realistic scenario where we sell a 20 year old striker with bags of potential who just got us a win.

I can.  Emery does not like chaotic players or chaotic people IMO.  If  Duran is as chaotic as he appears, then I'm guessing Emery would rather reallocate the £20mill elsewhere.  Whether we can put a deal together that suits player, agents, managers and finance people - that could prove very difficult..

    Just a question…

considering where we are in the league, our progress, standing and ambitions…

being “in the mix” with the other perceived “top clubs”… should we really be interested in their reserves or cast offs?

If they aren’t good enough to be getting a game for those clubs, should they be getting major game time for us and worth the financial outlay in terms of fee and wages? Especially at this time and with how we are doing…

If we’re looking to either overtake or compete with teams like Spurs, Newcastle, Arsenal, Liverpool, even Chelsea (as shit as they are doing, but they won’t accept long term mediocrity) and even… even Man City (probably or arguably the main/only club where a reserve or bench player could actually improve and impact us)…

(should we even include Man Utd and West Ham in this “list”? Na)…

    then…

should we going for players that (a) the asking price will be massive for anyway, (b) the wages will be massive, (c) are not good enough to play for those sides???

I suppose it depends and is case by case and there are different levels but…

if a player like ESR is deemed not good enough for Arsenal… would he be good enough for us and worth the expense? When he probably wouldn’t even displace our better players or those he would be in direct competition with…?

Why sign Philips when City paid a massive fee for him and put him on massive wages? He’s not as good as any our starting midfielders…

I think there’s a debate to be had about how many of our players are better or at least as good as some of theirs too… we’ve made staggering progress in a short time… thanks to Unai.

Many of the players these sides bought, especially the better ones, have players who were brought from abroad and became stars or considered so… it’s at least an approach that is usually more cost effective…

Which “reserve” or “out of favour” PL players are actually worth going for, and would even want to come, when taking all factors into account? We can’t afford or attract their starters…

    Something to ponder…

I prefer the approach of bringing in players like Pau and Diaby that can actually be as good if not better than some of their players… and I think that’s the mentality/strategy that Monchi and Unai will mostly employ…

I just can’t see any value in the PL… and value is something I’m sure we are pursuing and will have to pursue…

I’m not saying buying a PL player will not improve us or any side but… for example… just look at the sort of fees Chelsea have paid… has it been worth it? Brighton have laughed all the way to the bank…

And can we afford that kind of spending? I think not…

Also… if we take a reserve player off these sides… the demands will be excessive and we’re essentially helping them out by boosting their coffers, getting ripped off, paying huge wages and allowing those clubs to go out and buy better players or those that they really want with the it to become stronger… it also weakens us in a competitive aspect imo and keeps us “inferior”…

I think there is a lot of value where a player is in a squad that doesn't play to his strengths.  Out Matty cash is a good player but doesn't necessarily suit our new way of playing.

I think I’d be happy to let him go to Italy on loan and let him cut his teeth there for 6 months.

    We’d need a replacement but I don’t think that’s a major issue.

Isn't he going to just sit on a warmer bench tho?

  4. I think these top ex-players fall into the trap of demanding the respect off the players that they think they deserve from their playing days, but have done nothing to earn it.  They also are egotistical enough to believe their skills on the pitch will automatically transfer off it

  5. We've been picking up loads of points in a tough (was it deemed the toughest out of the top ten teams?) and congested Xmas period.  I think we now get a settled and rested team back together and play much better.  Genuinely think we'll be in a title race until the last few games.  Man city and Liverpool will set the pace and imo we hold on to their coat tails all season 👍

Lack of options or some trust by Unai to put Tim on?

Either way - good to see him back.

I think he features against Burnley hence the minutes against utd

Question is, why would Leicester be willing to sell him in January when they're top of the championship table currently? I know he's not starting but he's their first backup.

Second question, if he's not good enough to start for them in the Championship, would he be a good enough backup option for a team in the PL top four?

He's cheap because I believe his contract runs out in the summer.  I haven't seen him play recently, but always thought he was a useful bench option for Leicester when they were in the prem.

If the budget is tight then it had potential to work imo

    And the glazers...

Bought the club for £800m, take out around £1bn, sell 25% for another £1bn

And I bet they don't use Radcliffes money to settle the loan, that's controlled debt

They're some businessmen, they've got the golden goose

Yeah if I owned man utd, I'd have screwed them over too

It's the movement of the arm/hand in both of them, which deems the handball. They are both not accidental movements, the ball is moved in the direction needed.

Exactly. You shouldn't be allowed to chest the ball and then slap the ball away from your opponent with your arm

  10. Also, can you imagine this team a year ago running around chasing rainbows and parked cars at the same time and catching neither, individually and collectively devoid of confidence and competence and heading for a relegation scrap - being turned into a possession based, title-chasing team?  We look and act like winners, refusing to be beaten, dominating opponents, and playing some of the most composed and brilliant football I've seen from a villa team.  Playing man city, Newcastle, Brighton and others off the park.  We turn up at villa park to see wins and goals now in place of desperate shit shows.  Imagine what it actually takes to make that happen.....

Take a bow Villa because what you've done in 13 months is absolutely unreal 👏👏👏👏

Motivation needs to be tweaked and stoked and massaged from preseason to the last game of the campaign, and the coaching staff will use a previous bad result as a device to stoke motivation. Its fundamental to team management.

In theory, Emery will have the players channel their anger and disappointment with VAR and the dropped points into resolution and a deeper commitment to throttle Man Utd.

Oh as a general point yes.  Just didn't really agree if you thought motivation was a reason we lost to Sheffield.

For me, our first 11, especially the midfield has a perfect balance to it.  When changes are forced, it doesn't work the same.

Very like Douglas Luiz a few years back. Came up knowing how to scrap and needs to temper it in the senior game. He’ll learn

Not sure I see the luiz comparison tbh
