Having high xG with no goals means he can't finish rather than being unlucky.

Or he was unlucky, I can remember a couple of instances where the keeper pulled off a really good save which should have gone in.

  2. I was a bit underwhelmed but the more I think of it, the more I like it.  If we can get him for £15m plus some add ons he is proven premier league striker and we need depth.

His stats show he might of been a bit unlucky last season and typically scores or assists every one in two games.

Samatta is not good enough and should be sold/loaned out.

Wesley may be given more time.

Davis actually was unlucky and should have got a couple of goals according to expected goals.  He also had 3.25 shot creating actions per 90 which is really good.  I think he needs a season on loan in the championship to play regularly and score 20 goals and then he will be ready.

If we go into the start of the season with Wilson, Watkins and Wesley as our strikers it is a massive upgrade on last year.

We all seem to have opinions on strikers, wide players and full back etc that we want.

The other critical position we need is a new quality MC, although not much talk about it.

Which quality MCs do people think we should be going for? (realistic targets)

Valentin Rongier for me.  Good tackler, passer and creator.

Cash announced tomorrow, Benrahma announced the day after possibly.

Announced for who?  Apparently Arsenal want Benrahma and the odds of them signing him are now almost the same as us according to Skybet....

If we’re going for year-on-year progression at the same rate then the target really is 9th-10th for this season.

That would be excellent progression imo, after that it’s a place by place scrap to claw upwards against some very good sides.

I think you're probably right, the minimum expectation is probably top 10 if we spend a lot of money.

    I do.

First we establish ourselves in the league over several seasons. Then we establish ourselves in midtable, THEN you go thinking about top 6.

Like Leicester when they won the title the season after nearly getting relegated the season before or Wolves as soon as they were promoted.  Or even Sheffield United last season.  We already have 4 or 5 really good players, another 4-5 will make all the difference and many of those close losses will turn into wins.   I think people under estimate what the owners want.  Eden's wants and expects Villa to follow a similar growth to the Milwaukee Buck in my opinion.

    Top six ?

I think that is the stated objectives of the owners.  Maybe not get there but definitely compete there sooner rather than later.  If we did spend £150m well on 5-6 players I don't think we will be far off.

One thing to note about the reported knock back from Tammy is the willingness to drop at least £50 million (minimum I think he’d cost) on a striker, in addition to Watkins.

That sort of money opens up options for some Real quality players in Europe.

We are obviously playing our cards very close to our chest but it does suggest the owners are very serious about making a big step forward next season and competing for top six.  Maybe we do have 150m to spend knowing that Jack will likely leave if not this season then next?  If he stays it is because we finished 5-8 and have a big increase in revenue which can fund the spend?

Combined 20 shots & 12 on target. The system we employed post lockdown made us the 4th best team defensively, in terms of shots faced compared with 19th best before lockdown. Think the system we played is perfect for the team we are and to get results in the Prem. You could even argue, if Walcott hadn't scored the first header of his career and West ham hadn't got that lucky deflection we could of even got 12 points from last 4 games. Hypothetical I know but there was only fine margins between us getting the max amount of points. Think we should, and will, continue to play the way we played before lockdown. We'd be mad not to. Who knows how we'd do with a Striker who can score goals.

Completely dominated Sheffield United and Newcastle as well.  If we start the season with only one or two new signings it's not the end of the world.  I can easily see 4 or 5 points from those first three games.

If possible, I'd be happy with this lot:

    Dumfries - £15m (RB & RCB cover)

    Benrahma - £25m (LAM)

    Skov - £12m (RAM)

    Edouard - £30m (ST)

Spend the remaining £18m on whoever else is needed but I'd be happy those to start with.

Wouldn't want Skov.  Not much of an upgrade on what we have and only mentioned because of the Lange link.  I would prefer Buendia.

I would prefer rashica over sarr. He is much more productive and he is a creative hub for a team as well. Still only 24.

Would take either for the RW or Samuel Chukwueze.  Looks like the Spanish clubs are struggling and if we can get him for say £25-30m plus add-ons it would be a fantastic deal.  Only 20 and already creating over 4 shooting chances per game last season.

Rashica is better than sarr. And sarr is also a right winger. If we were going to sign sarr we wouldn't sign Buendia and I would prefer Buendia. Because he would be 10 million cheaper and is more creative.

We could sign both and play Buendia as a number 10 with Jack on the left.  Buendia is actually quite a good tackler so would help on the defensive side as well.

  13. Defenders now.  Gleison Bremer for Torino is a stand out performer and still only 23.  Could be a realistic target to strengthen the backline.

Sam Bryan in the rb position and Tomori both  performed well and could potentially be signed for reasonable fees.

  14. Some more potential young targets across Europe (Italy, England, Germany, Spain).  Combined stats for all < 25 showing defensive contribution (Adj DA 90).  DMs first.

I am as surprised as anyone to see Marvelous making the list.  Definitely potential to be a good DM if he can continue to adjust to pace of premier league.  Billing is really high up and could be a good addition.

i still can't believe how quiet the transfer window has been. i guess players are still on holiday, but across the board there has been very little activity

I think most clubs have no money due to Covid-19 losses.  Even many of the 'big' clubs are talking about having to sell to buy.  There is an argument that waiting is better if you have money until clubs get desperate and need to sell to stay afloat.  if we play this well, we might get a few bargains later in the window.

Potential champions league football, world class manager and some players who could be world class within 1 to 2 years (Adama and Jimenez), yep... it's all hype :D

We already have 1 player who is world class and better than both you mentioned and another 2  (McGinn/Luiz) who could be exceptional players.
